So sad.

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=20165

Honda's compact sedan isn't so popular in Japan

Although such a development seems unthinkable in the United States, if this latest report from the Nikkei is to be believed, the Honda Civic will be bowing out of the Japanese auto market.

In the U.S., the Honda Civic has been one of the best-selling vehicles on the market thanks to its reputation for reliability, quality, and fuel economy. In fact, Honda has sold over 215,000 Civics through October for 2010 -- the number of Civics sold in October alone was over 17,000.

However, the story is much different over in Honda's home market of Japan. According to Nikkei, Honda sold only 182 standard Civics and 270 Civic Hybrids for the month of October. As a result, the company will stop the sales of all Civic models in Japan.

Honda's product portfolio is much more diverse in Japan than it is in the U.S. and European markets where the Civic does extremely well. As a result, the Civic is seeing its sales gobbled up by smaller siblings like the Fit and more versatile ones like the Stream and Freed.

But while the Civic may be getting the axe in Japan, the model will continue to live on in other markets. The U.S. is expected to receive the next generation Civic some time next year.

Its just sad because really this is a direct result of the civic getting bigger and bigger until it outlived its usefulliness in Japan to be replaced by its own smaller cars.

isn't the civic in Japan a CSX??

isn't the civic in Japan a CSX??

Yup

edit from wiki:

The CSX is not a rebadged JDM Honda Civic, rather Honda Japan chose the Canadian-designed CSX as the template for the JDM Civic.[1][2][3] Externally, the CSX shares its cab forward architecture with the USDM Civic.[4] Differentiating the Acura from its mainstream North American counterpart include a slightly longer nose with shaped headlamp clusters, a full-width lower air intake and a slight crease up the hood's centreline. At the rear, jewelled taillamps and the shaping of the trunk's sheet metal contrast the upscale-marketed CSX from the Civic.

didn't they announce the end of all the type-R's a few months ago?
or was that only in UK?

That's the POS UK Civic Type R. No one cares about that because it's the bastard, inbred child of the Civic family. Second ugliest would be the EP3.

Sadly, it'll still show it's disgusting face in other parts of Europe and Japan.

Sad news for hot hatch enthusiasts: sales in most of Europe will be discontinued by of the end of 2010 because the 2.0 liter VTEC engine does not meet the stricter Euro V emission regulations. The Type-R is only produced at Honda's Swindon factory in the UK and production will continue for certain European markets as well as some markets outside Europe such as Japan. Too bad that the Civic Type R Euro won’t be released on the old continent, despite it is engineered for it.
http://www.autoevolution.com/news/2011-honda-civic-type-r-euro-launched-in-japan-25902.html

Actually, scratch that. EP3 and Euro Civic are equally ugly. Although conceived at different times, they were both fed a constant supply of Drano while in the womb.

an end to the japanese civic means an end to the civic type-r too, cuz the csx-s and the euro CTR are not true type-r's IMO

ITR gone
NSXR gone
CTR gone

the type-R brand will be dondies, thats very sad news

It's definitely a loss to the enthusiast community, though it would be equally unreasonable to expect a Honda to continue producing cars that aren't profitable.

Honda is heading towards a different direction anyways, getting rid of all their sportier cars. What's left, Honda Accord =/? Reminds me of Toyota, when they use to have sports cars in their lineup back then and then now they are heading towards this hybrid/fuel efficient car era, no more MR2, celica, supra, etc.

I haven't read a single good review on the new civic.

Not only are they hideous, but Honda has no plans to produce an AWD or diesel version, which will inevitably lead to poor sales in emerging markets.

The Truth about Cars has a front spy shot of the refreshed Civic here: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2010/11/honda-civic-too-big-in-japan/

I feel sorry for the company that Honda has become. Soichiro Honda must be rolling in his grave. On the other hand, enthusiasts make up less 1% of the market because all the other 99% care about is looks/status and reliability. It's too bad that double-wishbones, ergonomics, and quality materials have been sacrificed for girth, flat-out ugly styling (at least Hondas in the 80s/90s have aged gracefully), and gimmicky interiors.
