Goodbye Jericho Wharf

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Vancouver Park Board has voted unanimously in favour of scrapping the historic Jericho Marginal Wharf.

The structure was used 60 years ago by the Canadian Military, but is now unsafe and leaking dangerous creosote which is damaging the environment.

The decision to scrap the wharf comes as welcome news to Dawn Hanna with the Jericho Stewardship Group. "You know it's great for wildlife, it's great for park visitors. And I think that in the long run, this is a really wise decision"

But Joan Bunn with the Committee trying to save it was hoping to at least keep part of it. "I was envisioning a smaller wharf, but that still went out over the sea."

The Park Board has set aside $2 million for the demolition. That will start taking place in a few months, and should be finished by the end of next summer.

Pft, it's not even a proper wharf.

Oh well, there's still Steveston and White Rock to use, among others.

seriously.. the cost to do these two things should be much much lower.

no wonder we need the HST or some kind of tax to sustain the province's spending

^ No kidding. You know, if they just took off the extra tax on food, everybody would be happy. I know I would.

From the picture on am 1130 it looks like the pier to the east of jericho sailing centre. The crabbing one is to the west
