The road down Gaglardi to Como Lake seemed to be completely blocked. My gf took 143 and the bus went down to Hastings. Took about an hour from SFU to just go down the mountain.

Said the driver went into oncoming traffic, must've been a hero going down that long stretch on the oncoming side feeling good after a midterm or something...

I was heading down the hill about 1 or 2 minutes after it happened, at around 3:40...At first I thought it was just construction causing cars in front of me to slow down but I quickly realized it was an accident as I saw the first emergency vehicle arrive. It looked brutal and I was really hoping no one got seriously hurt so its sad to hear that someone died. Four fire trucks and three ambulances got to the scene as I was making my way through. Great to see that several cars that did witness the accident pulled to the side to help.

It was an absolute mess. Couldn't tell as two cars were off to the side by the trees and the one car (sedan, i think) in the middle of the road was completely destroyed. I also focused most of my attention to the paramedics tending the injured.

My guess, based on how it looked like is that the car the middle was heading up to SFU and veered to oncoming traffic; car on the left lane going downhill took avoiding action, clipped the oncoming car and took out the car on the right lane. There were 5 or 6 other vehicles that pulled to the side so I guess they saw everything.

It's just sad to hear that someone died. RIP.

The scary part is that there are center dividers throughout that area, so for something like this to happen, it must have been a freak accident.

Huh? Only the corner at the bottom has a divider?

No center divider for most of that stretch, only the bend. Accident happened halfway up the climb where there is no divider.

On the straight.:( People do need to take it easy driving there though, I see lots of cars swerving to pass slow moving buses and trucks.

Happened between the bend and the intersection of gaglardi and burnaby mtn parkway.

What, you mean people exceed the 50 km/h posted speed limit there? Never!!

Hopefully the one who ate it was the one doing the racing, if that was the case... but it's never that way... it's always the innocent ones.

on a side note.

Two young Asian Chicks in a white 4matic C-class almost ran me over at the back alley of the UBC village.

they didn't stop while I was crossing the back alley (behind the UBC pharmacy and the liquor store). Instead they tried to speed up and swerve around me. But they chose to swerve towards the direction that I was walking towards.

In the end, she had to break semi-hard and I quickly gave her a look.

Read about this on facebook, I fucking hate people who complain about getting to where they want to go but it's taking them 2 hours longer. Someone is fucking about to be put 6 foot under never coming back, show some decency.

RIP, i got off the mountain 10mins before it happened =/

wow uphill going into oncoming, thats pretty rare
i've seen a few times some modded ricers would go downhill into opposite lane and pass ppl with ricer flybys

11-18-2010, 12:12 PM
There are always ricer cunts racing each other up and down SFU bby; I've been passed by many ricers while going up SFU bby. What's worse is that driving fast is not as dangerous as driving into another lane, including into oncoming traffic. I've had a couple of close calls where they almost clipped my car coming up that top bend onto SFU.

Nonetheless, R.I.P. :(

1 thing I dun understand is the lack of centre divide. The area gets snow every year. Wouldnt it make sense to have it just so cars coming downhill won't slide into anyone going uphill. I know it's not related to this accident but wouldnt it make sense to put something up in the first place?
