: Rattling engine noise.. normal?

Hi, got a stock S14 not too long ago, before I bought it I did get an inspection from a credible place, said everything was in fine working condition

I never really listened to the engine idle with the =hood popped= until today, noticed a rattling noise made when engine is turned on. The car drives well and everything, just don't know if this engine noise is normal or not for the car. I'm probably just being paranoid but I'll double check with RS just in case before I take it to a garage (if i do probably after winter cause im garaging the car when it snows)

Video of rattling noise in video, sound gets clear at around 9 seconds .. sorry for the crappy iphone quality video, you can hear the sound nice and clear though

OH Right.. engine is a fully stock KA24DE other than a drop in air filter.. not a rebuild or swap or anything, 130,000 km 1998 S14 if that helps

Hmm .. i have no clue.. really noob about cars / engines lol

But after few hours of internet searching there were a couple of people saying something about timing guides being worn out or something

I have completely no clue.. just wondering for now if its a normal idle noise for the KA24DE for now

had this problem with my s13. im guessing either your tension guide is broken or could possibly be a water pump problem as well. its a common problem for ka24de

Remove the valve cover and unbolt the top chain guide. My s13 does that too.

How positive are any of the above posters about the timing chain guide? Is this problem serious at all, and how much does it cost to replace?

satek

You don't replace the top timing chain guide, you unbolt it and set it on fire because it's useless. You should look into lucas chain lube, I heard it keeps the chain quiet.

Mine continues to rattle 24/7 even after driving for like an hour or when car is completely heated up QQ does yours only rattle at start up when its cold?

Hopefully it is indeed this "worn out guide problem" and not something serious

It's just the worn out guide making a rattle. Nothing serious. Happens with nearly 95% of KAs out there.

ok after watching your video it COULD be ticking lifters but most likely still the guide. You should take it to a shop.

mine only rattles on start-up

Hmm, interesting. Was gonna say lifters but it was a little fast paced for that. Learn something new everyday.

No.
It's the Guide.
There's 2.
One up top, and one in the front.

The one in the front requires you to remove the Cam Cover.

just take a long screw driver and use it as a sethoscope to pin point where the noise is first

Talked to a bunch of garages about this problem

Some have said I need to replace the whole timing chain.. but my car is only at 130,000 kms and I do believe timing chains last a long ass time

Others have said just the remove the guide and it will be okay,

Does anyone know whether i should go with the whole timing chain procedure for my car at 130k kms or save a butt load of money and just remove the guides? Thanks

Timing chains last like 3 times longer than timing belts, so removing the guide is really all you need to do. If you are really paranoid then get your chain replaced.

SpuGen

....

How about you just take off the Chain Guides first instead of paying a shop to take away your money for a part that doesn't need replacing for A LONG TIME.
It's a Timing Chain. Not a belt. They last MINIMUM 250K

Take it from a 240 owner.
I've never seen anyone replace the timing chain.
They've only taken off thier Chain Guide.

Matt Powers.
KA-T.
No Chain Guides.
Hasn't replaced the Timing Chain. And that's his drift car on a rebuilt motor (block)

Just read the guide for removing the two timing chainguides, I think I can manage the upper one, the other one where you need to remove the distributor.. not so much..

Anyone know anyone with experience in this and won't charge an arm and a leg?

EDIT: Quote from some guy on bc240 =/

" Here is a kit: http://www.amsperfor...for-KA24DE.html

It's $350US. That's the absolute minimum that you should replace. You CANNOT remove guides and call that "fixed". The chain will skip without guides in place. There are only 2 guides in the updated kit, as you see in that link. The top 2 guides are useless. The guides wear, the tensioner wears, and the chain stretches. Anything less and you're just half assing it. On top of this, if you want, you can replace the cam sprockets, crank and idler sprocket. You can find this stuff really cheap on ebay in fair quality, they're just gears. "

Anyone have anything to say to his comment? Or will it be safe just removing the two guides =/

If you bothered to read Kam's post.

Remove the top guide, just like we told you to.

If it doesn't work, then get a new Chain kit.
And guess what, the rebuild kit doesn't come with the Top Guides because they're useless.

Remove them already.

If you'd like a reallife diagnostic and not an online one swing by the shop with a large double double and I'll venture out into the cold pop the hood and take a lesson. All of the above diagnostics may be correct and I'm leaning towards timing chain guide or lifters as well.

Heh car is garaged for the winter, most likely going to do the fix when it stops snowing in feb or so (hopefully feb)

I'll bring it by you then i guess, though ill prob try to remove the top guide myself and see how it goes

EDIT: Just out of curiosity if the upper top guide removal doesn't do the job, would your place be able to remove the other upper timing chain guide? And how do you charge.. per hour? Thanks

Phil@rise
11-24-2010, 11:38 AM
yes we could do that and we charge by the hour Akira would be the guy to quote you as he's the resident nissan guru.

Just an update I removed the top upper timing guide, there was a little wear but noise is still there.

Time to removed the OTHER upper timing guide that requires removal of distributor / sprocket?
