What do you guys do when you can't fall asleep?
This insomnia is getting to me. What do you guys do to fall asleep?
Any home remedies/techniques?
I've been mindlessly surfing the net for hours now. This is brutal. Another hour and I might resort to opening a textbook.

when I can't sleep I just drink a glass a milk and either watch tv or play some xbox until I get tired.
if worse comes to worse, you can always turn to sleeping pills. But I heard there are some crazy side effects for some people.

Go to bed, and read a book.
Or what really works for me, I listen to sports talk on CKNW after I've gone to bed. Lights out of course. That usually does the trick.
Good luck, I hate not being able to fall asleep :(

Had the same problem but now I take a pill. I was at the point of not being able to fall asleep at all I would lay in bed toss and turn before i know it the sun would be coming up and I'd be having to goto school in an hour. Brutal times. Atleast now I get 8 hours instead of one or two.

i learnt these tips in psychology:
your bed should be used for only two things: sleep and sex.
when you associate your bed with reading, tv, computers, etc you are no longer using the bed primarily for sleep. so if you have these things in your room, try to eliminate them or at least limit usage prior to sleeping. it's best if you only jump in bed when you want to sleep.
sidenote: apparently having a tv in the bedroom kills your sex life (if you two sleep in the same room regularly, ie your wife)
also, give yourself time to wind down. do an activity you find boring and doesn't require a whole lot of focus. ie, for some people this may be reading, clipping your nails, or anything else you find boring.
only other thing i could recommend is a shake weight for your wife/gf :awesom:
^ good tip.
you can also try melatonin. my friend couldn't sleep well these days and took some last nite and slept for 11 hours.
myself woke up at 3 am last night and couldn't sleep till 5-6 in the morning. I fell back to sleep afterwards. that happens when I have too much on my mind. I kept trying to relax myself and stop thinking of what I need to do the next day.

when i had problems sleeping before, i would plan ahead and go to a community centre to use their pool, sauna and whirlpool. the sauna and whirlpool is relaxing and gets my mind off things. Also when ur in bed trying to sleep, do not look at the time.

i do the exact same, if that doesnt work i usually make myself something to eat, like a bowl of noodles and get myself into food coma then sleep
when i can't sleep i usually get up, make a bowl of instant noodles or something and eat til my stomach is round and bulging and then when i hop back into bed i fall asleep right away
another tip - if you smoke, don't smoke an hour or so before you intend to go to bed. been known to cause insomnia and restlessness for some people. but on the same token, i'm sure some people can't sleep until they've had one

2. Watch a movie you really like, which you watch often, but always only watch bits of, because you already know it inside out - ie with Forrest Gump or Goodfellas, I can never watch more than 15 minutes at a time anymore
3. Go eat all you can eat sushi, followed by cheesecake for dessert lol - you'll wake up bloated and shitting your pants, but hey, you'll also wake up from a nice, long sleep hahaha

go to your local London Drugs and get a bottle of Melatonin, toss like 5 in your mouth(recommended dosage is I think 2) and let them dissolve under your tongue, if your eye lids don't start feeling heavy within 15 minutes you're a fckin champ.
I'm 6'1 and 190 lbs, 5 of them works well for me, try 3 at first see how it goes.

I've been terrible the last few days, not able to sleep at all.
I think I'm going to turn the heat on in my room, maybe it's been a bit cold. I've noticed my feet can't warm up when I'm trying to sleep.
I use melatonin, I've run out right now. The advice above is completely wrong. You'll probably get a better effect with half of one pill than a bunch of them. I've been working nights for 6+ years.
Dosage
Studies from Massachusetts Institute of Technology have said that melatonin pills sold as supplements contain three to ten times the amount needed to produce the desirable physiologic nocturnal blood melatonin level for a more rapid sleep onset. Dosages are designed to raise melatonin levels for several hours[citation needed] to enhance quality of sleep, but some studies suggest that smaller doses (for example 0.3 mg as opposed to 3 mg) are just as effective.[88]
Large doses of melatonin can even be counterproductive: Lewy et al.[89] provide support to the "idea that too much melatonin may spill over onto the wrong zone of the melatonin phase-response curve" (PRC). In one of their blind subjects, 0.5 mg of melatonin was effective while 20 mg was not.[89]

Take a sleeping pill.
Many sleeping medications cause short and/or long term memory problems. I would not advocate using them except in short periods of high stress or trauma.
I'm a life long insomniac in a long line of insomniacs. I also worked for a sleep researcher at SFU for a couple of years.
First of all there's three kinds of insomnia, and it's important to identify which you are. 1. People who have trouble going to sleep. 2. People who have broken sleep and 3. People who wake up earlier than they want to.
Then you need to identify what your trigger is. Some people have racing thoughts or anxiety (this is the easiest type to deal with in my experience), others have no clue why they can't sleep. If you are the former, distraction, self hypnosis/meditation and other mind clearing methods work best. Creating a routine to deal with this works best, as it sets up triggers to tell your brain 'okay, time to settle down and rest'. I found that for example there's specific movies that I only use for this now and I rarely am awake through the credits because that's my 'time to sleep' cue.
If you are the latter you need to speak to your doctor.
There's a plethora of health related issues that cause sleep problems: diabetes (particularly hypoglycemia), thyroid, sleep apnia, other breathing issues, cardiac issues, depression, anxiety and allergies. These are all pressing and medically urgent and important to be ruled out particularly for the broken sleep and early riser crowd.
For example often when I wake up at 3 am feeling like all hell and anxious it's because my blood sugar's crashed to 3.8, anything below 4 is starting to get in the bad news range. If I have a snack and make sure my blood sugar's over 8 before I go to bed I can prevent this.
to long ; didn't read - If getting into a mellower head space doesn't work for you, see a doctor.

Melatonin is naturally produced by the body in preparation for sleep, meaning you need to have your body manufacturing it about a half hour to 45 minutes prior to when you want to sleep. Taking it in pill form can decrease your body's natural production which means you can be dependent on it for life or at least until you retrain your body. Which is fine if you need it but I wouldn't recommend it until you've exusted everything else and ruled out potential health issues contributing to sleep problems.
What most people don't know is that your body will NOT produce melatonin in a brightly lit environment so one of the best things to do is, about 45 minutes prior to bed turn off or greatly decrease the lights in the area you're in. This triggers your body to initiate melatonin production which begins the whole preparing for sleep.

From what I've heard and as spoon.ek9 has already mentioned.
If your mind doesn't think that your bedroom is a place of sleep it won't want to sleep there. I used to have my computer in my bedroom, i could stay up till 9 am playing video games, watch movies, of all kinds ;). But, when I moved out on my own all i had in my room was my bed and clothes. Now it takes me 10 - 15 minutes to fall asleep, in that time I listen to some Bob Marley on a quiet volume, I find that using headphones keeps me awake. Usually what I do is have my iphone on a stereo dock and set my timer for 20 minutes then it puts my iphone to sleep once 20 minutes is up. Oh, I also have a very low wattage bulb in my room as well.

Same here. If I want to make sure I fall asleep at a reasonable time, I Just pop 0.5mg. I tend not to have to do that more than once a week. The more you do it, the more you'll need until eventually you become totally dependent on it. But there are no withdrawal symptoms (other than insomnia) so it's not that big a deal.

Nor would I, but when needed in the short term they worked. I had to take them for a while a couple months ago due to high stress where I was getting maybe 1 hour sleep a night, they really were a life saver. I'm not advocating abusing them, see your doctor obviously. :p
