Say goodbye to cheap matinees, free parking, the Asian film festival, and off-the-cuff movies:

Film buffs bemoan Tinseltown takeover

Word that Vancouver’s Tinseltown theatre is being taken over by Cineplex Entertainment, revealed by The Globe and Mail earlier this week, has the local film community buzzing. But the advance reviews are hardly raves, as those who study and consume film fret over the possibility of losing one of the few art house venues in the city.

“They were all discouraged by the news, or a number of them were,” said Colin Browne, who led a discussion about the sale with his fourth-year screenwriting students on Tuesday at Simon Fraser University’s school for the contemporary arts.

“They thought ‘Oh, we’ll get the regular fare at Cineplex. It will shrink the number of films that will be exhibited to the regular Cineplex fare.’ They were worried about that. They like the way Tinseltown mixes it up.”

With Cinemark, the current owner of Tinseltown, out of the picture (and out of Canada with this sale), the operation will be renamed Cineplex Odeon International Village Cinemas. Pat Marshall, vice-president of communications and investor relations for Cineplex Entertainment, said the change of ownership – and name – would take effect on Friday.

“As part of the acquisition, we will review all elements of the theatre operation and we’ll make whatever change is necessary,” Ms. Marshall said, adding that staff have been offered – and have accepted – jobs with Cineplex.

Ms. Marshall said it was unclear whether pricing will change. The difference in cost for an adult ticket in the evening is minimal, but Cinemark offers discounts for matinees and also free parking for patrons during the film. The Cineplex-owned Scotiabank Theatre, a few blocks away, does not.

When asked whether the long-standing practice of showing less mainstream art films would continue at the theatres, Ms. Marshall was non-committal.

“I think we’ll take a look at a number of different elements in terms of programming,” she said, adding that Cineplex is looking at adding digital projectors and 3-D systems. “I think you’ll see a much expanded array of both technology and film offerings.”

Tom Charity, who programs the Vancity Theatre and also reviews films for CNN.com, called the sale cause for concern.

“I think [Tinseltown’s] booking has been really quite courageous and very diverse. ... They’ve shown a much wider range of films than you see at the Scotiabank, for example. They’ve been open to showing Canadian films and even subtitled films and they’ve been very open to the community to renting the theatre out to local festivals. And that may or may not change. The proof will be in the pudding. But if we look at what happens at the Scotiabank, that type of thing doesn’t happen very much.”

Brian McIlroy, a film studies professor at the University of British Columbia, agreed.

“Cineplex is likely to think long and hard about the variety – or the risk-taking – that Tinseltown has offered in the past.”

Barbara Lee, founder and president of the Vancouver Asian Film Festival, which is staged at Tinseltown, said she’s been told nothing will change.

“I’m hoping that they’ll be as supportive to our film festival as they have been in the past.”

While Prof. Browne has some concerns, he was also able to see some good news in the development. “It’s kind of heartening for someone who likes to go to the theatre to imagine that there will still be theatres. This is more heartening than Tinseltown saying we can’t make a go of it and closing down. That would make me sad.”

Personally didn't care a whole lot for that mall to begin with... They never had any good stores, and literally every business was dying or something lol
I wish Tinseltown was showing 'Buried', I looked all over the city for a theater that was showing that movie.

Tinseltown is not the mall, it's the theatre. Cineplex is taking over the theatre, not the mall.

The mall's name is International Village.

I mean, well... Aside from the 7-11, McDonalds, Food court and theater, there really isn't anything there.

Damn that sucks, I just went 2 nights ago too and love how they changed the parking for movie goers now. Before you need to get the ticket stamped and show it to the attendant after. Now you don't need to do squat and they didn't even bother putting an attendant at the exit. Not sure about weekends but that's how it was on Monday at least.

Hopefully they won't crank the prices and just make it yet another cookie cutter place. 80% of the theatres in this town are already Cineplex.

Honestly, the price for an adult ticket at tinseltown is only 75 cents cheaper than Silvercity. The only plus side to tinseltown are the diverse showing of movies it offers.

The only time I got to that mall is to use my free parking pass to watch the hockey games or concerts...

^^ it wasnt just the diverse showings it was the atmosphere and the reclining seats :D (which will probably change, except the seats)

there was a nice leather jacket store too across from the food court some lady from Quebec but sadly she never updated her designs over the years and disappeared

i like the Indian food place in the food court + death by chocolate (not sure if they're still there)

nothing will save that mall. it's a shit hole in a shitty neighborhood.

needles, piles of human shit and the stink of urine in that area isn't something i want as part of any shopping or movie experience.

Not anymore. I rarely go on matinee's so yeah...but I could careless about the prices anymore since they do offer great international movies.

"Reg. price 12.75
Children (1-11) 9.75
Seniors (62+) 9.75
Matinee 9.75
Tuesdays 8.75
Seniors - All Day Monday 8.75
First Matinee Showtime Mon-Fri 8.75
3D Movies extra 3.00
* prices subject to change"

^ That's correct but what makes Tinseltown different from Cineplex are it's diverse movie showings. That is what people are scared of. Not really the prices but more so the showings.

the price argument is total horseshit - u can buy those cineplex movie passes for $7.50 and use them whenever. tinseltown didnt have that.

i hope they keep showing artsy films, as tho im not a fan, i think its a niche with demand which can really be turned to somehing good. tr location is perfect, but tinseltown was always run And managd like crap just like the shitty mall its in, hopefully cineplex can tuen it around.

whats funny is that 2 dollar store sells the same shit from daiso, as well as stationaries from menji (store from that sells stationeries at aberdeen) & as well as those key chain dolls from the store beside the chinese radio place

but seriously i loved tinseltown for the international film festival & thats it

You're referring to Festival Cinemas. Along with Fifth Ave, they have 2 other theatres as well. Check them out.

Damn, I really liked Tinseltown. Very nice atmosphere and I would always grab something to eat with some friends at the food court before the movie. I know the food court is not taken over but it's that whole experience. But who knows, maybe this will improve the theater.

Well, more people will go if they show more mainstream movies right when it comes out. And I guess the inevitable 3D takeover too, do they show 3D movies now?

The foodcourt there isn't too bad. Really fond of the AYCE sushi place there, pretty baller lunch for $12. Always gave me afternoon sleepies though. :fullofwin:

The actual mall sucks ass but the theater was awesome. They usually skipped the shitty movies, showed the good ones and also some great indie flicks.

they have the nicest theatre in vancouver imo. plus it's never really busy and it's pretty classy there.

also, if one wanted to get a bj or a sex session this is the only theatre i can see it happening. though, i've never been fortunate enough to get either

babycheer
01-11-2011, 08:37 AM
This doesnt really come as a surprise since the theater is located in a mall that was once highly invested in before all the investors pulled out and then left to die.
This could be a great move for Cineplex, buying it out but not necessarily changing it to their mold so they can reach out and use the asian film festivals etc to attract a certain niche.
Plus who doesnt love those raising armrests & bend back chairs? Not to mention we can use our Cineplex movie tickets now, booya.
