Has anyone successfully exported a car to China and actually got it on the road and legal there?

If someone could let me know what the process is or where I could find information on this that would be great. Ie. The chinese website for their version of the RIV here in canada.

I am not looking for brokers who I have to pay thousands to get this through; I'd like to figure this out myself so if other family ever wants to do it I can help.

if it's strictly a foreign built foreign auto mobile there's a 110% or something ridiculous import tax on it.

but the value of the car - you can totally bs your way out of that if you have "the connections".

I hope you are not serious...there are many foreign importers / shops in China, and many individuals are doing the same shit like what he's doing. I bet Hyde has done it with his CGT. lol

A family friend of mine in HK used to export LHD Mercedes and BMW from Europe -> HK -> China back in the 90s. He said they had to go through a lot of depts and paid shit load of dirty money, nowaday the procedure has been standardized, at least in big cities, but varies at different ports. Your car might get impounded if you don't know your shit. That's how 7 of his BMW got seized and never got back. BTW, tax is close to 50% of what you paid for your car unless you can prove it's for your temp job in China, then it's tax free.

There are quite a few good articles on Google, but you may only trust 75% of what they write, cause the local law changes quickly.

BTW, used imports are not allowed in some provinces, as I know Shanghai is fine, but they will value the car as it is sold in Chinese market, like a car in Canada that is around 10K, they will tax you base on what it will sell in China like 30K.

like I said, it's expensive because the local law is complicated. Similar to importing a R32 to Canada, it costs you 2x as much than you actually pay in Japan.

Local law is "complicated". In other words, in order to import an old car into China you need to know the right people.

I always hear stories from my friends who work in China and from family friends. In the 90s, like you said, you pay to get things done, $3-40,000rmb + 2 carton of cigarettes can you get your ship load of cars loading off at the port. Officials could pocket the money much easier. Same as other containers like electronics and fruits etc. Paperworks were all handwritten and a chop somewhere, no audit or barcode check.

Nowadays, however, most Chinese won't take the risk of losing their jobs or getting handcuffed, unless you are talking about multi-million business, then they are interested in dealing with you. If you are talking about one or two cars, forget about bribing just follow their requirement and pay the heavy tax.

It is not possible to do this on your own. You need to use a government approved import agent to import anything into china. Also the car needs to be brand new, (unless you have massive connections) and you will need to get CCC approval for the car.

A $30,000 car, fully licensed will cost approx. 600,000RMB (depending on displacement)
