Where to go wheeling?

Can anyone suggest some places for a newbie to learn? I've been to triangle beach many times and Stave once (but I wasn't driving) and I'm looking for some new places to explore in my 4runner. Anyone want to come with? none of my friends are into 4x4's! Looking at after the holidays once works slows down and I have time to do some work on my truck (aussie locker and rock sliders hopefully, need paycheques).

Sylvester rd. in mission, lots of trails from easy to fucked.
Eagle mountain on the top of Westwood plateau, but you need a key to get to the trails.
Stave's ok but not my cup-o-tea.

for someone like you I would check out East and West Harrison. Easy fsring that you won't get in over your head.

Harrison is good. But quite the drive for a day trip.
Hot springs are awesome there and easy to get to. Too easy imo, I seen some civics and and a fiesta there last year .

How much snow is there by Harrison? I was thinking of taking the West Harrison fsr from Harrison to Pemberton tomorrow but I would guess theres tons of snow?

Ok, forget going to Pemberton! On a side note, I was in Squamish today and there wasn't much snow. I didn't go far out because it was getting dark, but god damn it I wish I found some spots to wheel there. Didn't really know where to go even with the backroads book. There was a logging road I went down by the chief but that's all I really did. Kinda sucked but whatever. Maybe I'll head back out there after new years if it doesn't dump snow. No/little snow = hopefully not getting stuck and having to walk out!
Oh yeah, I went looking for some spots on the Island on boxing day and I swear to god EVERY FSR I went past (except one, actually) had closed gates. I was in the Sooke/Jordon river area. There were tons of places to go explore too. Apparently they're not opening up again (for anyone wanting to do any 4x4 stuff) any time soon. Too many assholes going in there and dumping garbage, vandalizing logging equipment etc.

I was considering going to Pemberton tomorrow but I think I'll end up going to the Mamquam FSR in Squamish. I drove like 3km of it before I started heading back. Looks like theres lots of places to explore off that FSR, I'll let you guys know once I get back! Bringing tools, lunch and a tow chain just in case! Fingers crossed I don't get stuck..

luckily today i didn't get stuck and use the death chain. Actually, no one was around anyway, I would have been screwed if I got stuck. I didn't see anyone around the whole day! Maybe I'll go to Princess Auto tomorrow and pick up a strap.
Anyway, heres some pics.

So much ice up there. This was a frozen water fall that went across the trail. The left side was maybe a foot or a foot and a half thick with mud/rocks underneath and the right side was a pretty steep drop. I go as far as to say it was almost a cliff on the right. And on the other side of the ice (you can't really see it) was a huge rock in the middle of the trail. I turned around and went up another trail..

+1 for not using a chain.
some one at stave lake a few years ago had to get airlifted out with serious injury's. because the chain they were using snapped and sent a piece threw the back window and hit they guy in the head :(

and same with shackles connecting two straps thats what broke at stave a couple years ago and hit the person in the head. If need be toss a towel or jacket on the part or in the middle and it will help stop it if it snaps in half.

Did you get a recovery strap or a tow strap?
I only ask because the recovery strap acts like an elastic and is allot smoother for tug's than a tow strap which has zero give.

a tow strap isn't going to help you if nobody is around to pull on it
never use a tow strap. It will break and could kill you. Only use a tug strap!!!!
lol... but seriously, murd0c is right. I've seen pictures of chains, hooks and tow balls gone horribly bad. Chains and tow straps should be used only for towing. A proper tug strap with soft eyes (not hooks) is the safest when tugging or recovering a vehicle. Attach the soft eyes to the vehicle using a clevis (D) shackle.
There's a famous story of a guy who attached his strap to the trailer tow ball of the tow vehicle. It snapped off, recoiled through the windshield, the back window, recoiled again through the back window and went through the driver's headrest narrowly missing the driver's ear.
I was recovering a WRX at a winter rally last year and their factory tow bolt stripped out of its rusted hole and put a 12 gauge shotgun sized hole in my rear metal bumper. I was lucky it didn't hit anyone or go through my back window.

The Tow straps I was actually thinking of are the heavy study semi ones they use. Those are the best ones to use foo the price. Tug boat rope works the best but it take up way to much space and when it gets wet it's real real heavy. Never trust those princess auto straps because they are fricken junk but they are better then nothing I guess. If you do go out a lot on your own and dont have a winch get a come-a-long and snatch block as well and make sure always bring a axe or saw as well.

I've got the Princess Auto one, it's the 30k lbs one.
Nickmark, let me know next time you head out. I'd love to come, our trucks are identical in capability:P
And about using a chain. What about when using a hi-lift as a jack? Watched a quick youtube video and it said to use chain as it as nearly no give and will for he most part just break and fall to the ground? What should I use with my hi-lift then?
I know about the tow straps breaking and all those horror stories.

As long as your not shock loading the chain, I don't see a problem using a chain with a highlift with slow steady movement.

You can see the trail if you zoom in on the Google Maps there... there are lots of other side-roads as well, that I didn't have time for.
Edit: okay, you can KINDA see the trail... it's all covered in snow in the satellite view, but it really stands out that way. :)

Please please please don't go wheeling alone! At the very least, bring a friend, and tell a bunch of people where you're headed. Not to mention, all the gear listed above is a MUST, shovels/axe, even a jug of extra gas if you plan on heading deep into the bush. Especially if you've never been there before. Last thing you want to do is run out of gas in the middle of nowhere.
I had to learn the hard way. Wheeling alone, with no recovery gear. Got my Cherokee burried up to the doors in soupy mud/sand. 4" lift and 31" mud tires, I thought I could go anywhere! What an idiot I was. I didnt even have a proper jacket with me, and it got cold/rainy fast. Oh that was a loooong day :( It wasn't like Stave where there is always someone to help you out. I had to walk forever to get cell reception, call a buddy, then wait.
Makes me miss my Jeep though! I probably would have hung on to it if I had more people to wheel with.

LOTS of fun and very informative. it's ever 2nd saturday of every month. i would definately go again but i normally work saturdays so i won't be able to go again until probably august. you will learn a lot and you'll get to tackle some pretty hard shit if you choose to. if theres something you're not comfortable with then you can park your truck and ride with someone else for a bit (but wheres the fun in that?) you'll do fine with a 3" lift. does your truck have a locker? i kept up with everyone else with almost no lift and just a rear locker. your truck WILL get scratched.

You don't go seriously wheeling if you're worried about scratches... or dents, or scrapes, or flats, or rolling over...
Kinda like when we go to the dog park and people get upset if a dog jumps up and gets them muddy... like WTF were you expecting??

I was camping on the island last year for 10 days, damn near every fsr was gated. Talked to the locals and there was too much dumping and vandalism of logging equipment etc so everything got gated. Really sad, that's why I put in a huge effort to clean up peoples shit when I go wheeling, I'd hate for that to happen over here!

ya it's the first turn off right after the chief....gravel road then it hits a fork, we went left and climed up the mountain....if you go right there's a sign that says you can go in 10kms but the bridge has been taken out

Ahh I see, pretty sure that's the stawamus/Indian fsr off the mamquam fsr, we actually went right at the fork, we went past 10km I'm pretty sure in 2wd the whole time. That's where the
snow was haha

Yeah I was up higher too on other trails in the area and there was no snow. Maybe there's lots of shade on that part of the trail, I wish I was on a real computer so I could post a pic, it was pretty neat haha

Its easy if you don't take the roads that branch off the branches of the main fsr. Hope that made sense haha

Ummm my truck is on 33's and locked in the rear and less than 2" of lift, I made it through the first 2 tricky parts but we turned back after that. So yeah, I'm not sure if your taco would make it as I'm not sure what sorta rig would do or how much harder it gets past where we went. Mostly rock crawling, locked is a must and a spotter really helps for sure haha. When are you thinking of heading up? Mind if I tag along? I'd like to take another wack at it

Where's goose lake? Is that along the whipsaw? We camped at wells lake and lodestone, I can't remember the name of the other lakes. We were behind all the other groups hahah, my buddies jeep had some serious mechanical issues. Once I get the pics off my camera and my friends camera I'll post up a trip report!

You forgot right next to Ricky Lake. It's off the KVR and you can also get there from hwy 5A. It was wicked times super nice spot with no Bugs!!
Hanging around that Epic guy for 3 days kinda sucked tho :fullofwin:

Went to the 4WDABC maintenance run today, the 4 bolts holding the lower ball joint to the knuckle on a guys 3rd gen 4runner snapped off just after the v rock! Luckily we were on our way down so the truck was pointing the fsr. We managed to hold everything together with tie down straps and limped the truck to the sasquach inn. Long day..

Think I'm gonna retire my 4runner hahah, a rear wheel bearing let go yesterday morning in a parking lot. It gets wheeled hard and its my daily driver so I get screwed when something breaks. I might pick up a 85 4runner with a 4" lift on Friday hehehee. Solid axle and it's got a 22re and 33's. I've got plans for it..

Guy sold it. Damn it! Yeah the 85 is sweet, it saves me the hassle of doing a sas and was the only year that came solid axle and fuel injected. Next one that pops up on craigslist is mine haha. I'm kinda toying with the idea of picking one up from California or Arizona. If I'm building a rig I'd like to build it on a mint frame you know?

finally ended up doing the logging road thing. i was scared of scratching the truck the whole way up the mountain. the logging road was in sicamous which is about a 500km drive from the lower mainland. its pretty much the half way point between here and calgary if you're driving..
