I own two vehicles, A and B, both insured to be on the road. I'm putting vehicle A into storage for the winter with storage insurance, and understand I have to surrender its license plates.

Can I instead cancel the insurance on vehicle B, surrender its plates, and then transfer the insurance/plates from vehicle A to vehicle B?

i don't think you can just transfer. You can refund/cancel the insurance on A, surrender the plates - then take those plates, put on the new car, and buy new insurance for it. You'll have to pay admin fees for both, and they will access the insurance differently, unless they're the exact make, model and year.

If you own both vehicles, you can cancel car b and transfer car a over. However there is a $28 transfer fee for transferring from car a to car b. Also there is a $30 cancellation fee that's charged for canceling plate b

u can direct swap if u own both cars, pretty cheap to do, and no u're not going to be charged cancellation fee because you are not canceling anything. I do this is twice a year swapping between my summer and winter car no problems

yes, you can transfer insurance & plates from car A to B if you own both cars. So go cancel insurance on car B, transfer insurance & plates on car A to B and then buy storage insurance for car A. However, there will be a fee on transfering and canceling insurance.

unless you are really sentimental about the plates, keeping the plates or renewing car B would be cheaper.

Thanks everyone for the replies, this is exactly my situation. I'm not particularly sentimental about the plates, but just prefer one over the other a bit.

If admin fees up being a lot, I'll just do it the straightforward way.
