I'm pretty excited for this thing! Gingerbread 2.3, NFC, curved display, 480x800 Super AMOLED...the list goes on.

Dropping Stateside on Dec 16th.

no clue
but if ur on wind/mobilicity
just go down to the US and buy it
im a little bit disappointed buy this phone. It doesn't bring much improvement to the current gen of Android devices.

It seems to me that this is Google's push to have Android working well on those cortex processors as the SGS just had issues with the software on the SGS lines.

This phone doesn't bring much improvement over the N1 aside from the different processor and the NFC chip. We will see.

I will pick this up tho once the HSPA version gets released

and how will it be different from my Galaxy S? (other than the fact that I hope they will have the GPS sorted out in this new "flagship")

What advantages does a curved display have over a flat one?! I'm not too familiar with Android or the phone itself but I was just curious because this one seemed to catch my attention

well whoever was in charge of rolling out 2.1/2.2 for the SGS has gotta get their shit together

but now its the google devs with their hands on the NexusS, it will be much better. and it will be rooted in no time

Shouldn't this phone work on Bell, Telus, Rogers, Wind and Mobilicity?

It does, but for HSPA speeds, you'll have to go on Wind/Mobilicity. Otherwise on Bell, Telus, Rogers, Fido it's going to max out on GPRS speeds for data.

It's more like an enhancement on the perceived usability of the screen. Things that come to mind are things like "the natural arc of the thumb", "better angle of screen vs. eyeballs", "wraps around face better"....etc.

NFC = near field communications

Think of it has super short range highspeed communications. ie.Bluetooth but ~4" apart. AFAIK. Somebody jump in if I'm wrong :)

definately, it's bs 2.3 is almost out and we dont even have an official 2.2 wtf

but the nexus S being pretty much identical to the galaxy S, i'm confident you'll be able to flash whatever comes out for the nexus S to the vibrants

Tim Budong
12-06-2010, 10:01 PM
multimedia aspects of 2.2 wasnt great to begin with
there are MANY alternatives to media players on these phones so it honestly does not matter

and its quite embarrassing that Samsung took forever to up the SGS line to 2.2. but keep in mind, 2.1/2.2 still sucks for whatever reason on that cortex hummingbird processor. Now that the ASOP 2.3 is natively able to support that hummingbird processor means that a 2.3 port to SGS devices could happen sooner rather than later.

2.3 has been ported to Droid Eris already, N1 should be soon before the release of the Nexus S

no biggie..but sorta sucks..but gonna tough it out
I can't justify the upgrade to the Nexus S.

i been readin bout it just now. I can't justify the upgrade. and im sure that the N1 will still get some decent support.

Its just a matter of when or IF Samsung/Google will release a (850/1900/2100) ver of this phone. then I might switch. I can already sorta see the advantage of that curved screen if I were to type in portrait mode. For now, I have the Gingerbread keyboard on my N1

The curved display is just curved glass, the display itself is not curved, only the glass that is glued onto it is. Which also means that if you scratch or crack the glass, you have to replace both as you can not separate them.

http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-S-Teardown/4365/2

The only thing it has going for it is the vanilla rom and dev support, the actual phone is nothing special and the speed tests prove it.

"True android" that much better then on the samsung? Never used an android before so I have no clue on the difference.

the lag issue in the browsing is nothing new
it happened in the nexusones as well, nothing a custom rom wouldnt fix either.

I actually just threw 2.3 on my nexus one
gonna give it a day and see how it is

it wasnt an easy process to install 2.3 on my phone, but so far so good
nothing really spectacular either

Me, ghostrider and probably a few others will tough it out and continue our support on the NexusOne

so far, no bugs have really been reported, but it seems like android still runs smoother on the qualcomm snapdragon processor vs the supposedly faster hummingbird cortex A8

I will buy one right away when a 850/1900/2100 3G comes out. I am in asia for 2weeks of everymonth so I need something that will work in both places. Sux that they came out with the AWS version first or I would have gone down to Best Buy in Bellingham to get one. I have already had two bricked Galaxy S's. The second one is back to Bell for service.....I wish HTC would make a true world phone!!! I might have to get a Motorola Global or XT610...

There might not even be a 3G version for one reason. ATT/Rogers/Bell/Telus will not play along. These 4 carriers will want to load their own garbage onto the device in order for them to subsidize the phone for Samsung.

From what I read, ATT pulled out of hte deal last minute, and by the time that happened, devices had been ordered and Google had to sell the device

There will be a port of gingerbread soon for the Galaxy S i9000 which we are lucky to get from bell and use on any of the networks here since its the first to get any updates.

Also since the release of the Nexus S you can be sure that the Gingerbread CyanogenMod for the Galaxy S will be based off the stock Nexus S ROM since the hardware is virtually identical.

What holds back the Galaxy S line is how samsung set up their touchwiz on top of Android and their whole file system. Which is why when u put in a lagfix the performance gain is almost 300%.

JK4 unrooted no lagfix scored 980 in quadrant JL2 scored 1100. and Stock Eclair scored 880. Stock Eclair with Lag fix scored 2400 thats messed up. Anyone know if the Nexus S is plagued by the same file system even though it runs a vanilla Gingerbread rom?

ITS COMING TO CANADA :)

Canadians, you must chafe under the yoke of a Gingerbread-free existence no longer, for the Nexus S is coming to the Great White North sometime in March. According to Mobilicity CEO Dave Dobbin, the handset will be available on the company's AWS band, but he also said that Bell, Telus, and Rogers will carry the Nexus S as well. If true, that means Samsung will be providing another model of the phone with support for WCDMA 850 / 1900 for it to work with Canada's big three wireless providers. We can only hope that's the case, as said model would be usable on AT&T's network -- making an awful lot of us living south of Canada quite happy. Peep the video after the break to hear the good news for yourself.

Just a question, would you guys get the Nexus S or HTC Incredible S?

I am currently working in Taipei, and about to renew my phone contract next week. The Nexus S and Incredible S were both released last week here. Based on a 2 year contract, the Incredible S is about CDN$33 cheaper.

Although having the most updated pure Google experience sounds great, I have gotten used to HTC Sense (currently using HTC Legend). Also going to lose that LED notification light is going to be hard. Another thing to point out is that the Nexus S version we are getting does not use S-AMOLED..rather S-LCD. Should I just go for the Incredible S?

Just to note as well, the LG Optimus 2x was released over the weekend too but its not available through carriers yet.

I'm all for this phone being compatible with Canadian 3G frequencies but I hate when Canadian carriers get phones that I have been waiting for. Everyone ends up having the same phone and the re-sale value of the phone goes down like crazy.

Take the Nexus One for example, prior to Moblicity selling the phone, one could sell the Nexus One for at least $100 more than what the current price is.

Just my 2 cents.

I miss my nexus one, but when I went back to selling phones this year I sold it to get my hands on a phone I could demo and sell.

I'm putting my money on the atrix. The thing is a powerhouse.

Exactly, these phones are primarily assessed by their hardware. The software that comes with the phone is simply an option. Cyanogen and many others have already developed roms to replace the standard Motorola software on the phone making it more functional and more user friendly.

im pretty sure theres gonna be two models, ones for the big 3 which will be sold thru fs/bb and then wind/mob will be sold thru them itself..at least i hope

There are 2 models coming out for Nexus S: Robelus model (i9023) and the AWS model (i9020).
Robelus one will have the 850/900 needed for their 3g network. AWS one will have the 1700 for their 3g network. Rumor has it that Robelus version will get the SLCD whereas the AWS one keeps the SAMOLED like T-Mo gets it down south.

JordanLee

That will be complete bullshit if Robellus models get the SLCD. I heard Europe was the only country to get the SLCD versions?

I'm backing out of the nexus if the rogers one is slcd rather than samoled..I guess we'll find out in a few days lol

If you go to the google nexus s page under tech specs u can choose the country and only a handful are slcd the rest is samoled

Mobilesyrup (http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/04/06/here-are-the-upcoming-rogers-nexus-s-price-plans/)

cheaper than the Telus one:

Rogers just released pricing 99 3y voice n data 499 outright

Rumoured Koodo has it for 450. Smells like bs though. I'm currently on Rogers now and wouldn't mind buying it from them. However, if Koodo or someone else drops the phone earlier or cheaper. How will warranty thru the carrier work? Rogers has been astounding regarding their 1 year warranty in the pass with my pos 9700.

Another fun fact. Telus charges 689.99 for the phone outright if you don't have a telus acct. The 550 price (I thought it was 525) is only if you're buying it outright with a telus acct. Wow

Thanks for the insight. I'm going to try and hit up Best Buy tomorrow on my day off. Insider info from my bud says they're getting Rogers stock tomorrow so thats my first bet cause I have BB credit to use up too. If they don't let me buy outright, hell will be brought forth. If not, I'll hit up the multiple Rogers stores at Metro and continue the hunt. It's unlocked for sure. Why cancel? You're going to get hit with major ECF. I phoned every FS and BB in the Lower Mainland. Only a few have Telus ones in stock at 600 apparently? The buying outright vs contract thing is a load of crock. Some said yeah no problem, some said straight up no. Really does make me think the department is cashing in on the commission secretly. FS Broadway and Pine said hes like pretty sure he's getting Rogers ones in today so he said to phone him every so often to check. Same story with the FS on Bridgeport. Anyone try the Surrey/Langley locations yet?

Is that before or after you flashed a ROM? I probably won't get mine till thursday.

It actually happened before I even unlocked the bootloader I believe. Which makes me think its an app like NoLED thats causing the screen to become unresponsive or something. I got a friend to call me while it was "frozen" and the thing vibrated and my friend said it was ringing. But nothing rang on my end. Then like 5 seconds later the lockscreen appeared and everything was okay. So weird.

I figured it out. I think it's my Proximity Sensor thats broken. It registers that my face is still next to it even way after the call has ended making the entire screen and button combo useless. I don't even know how to test this though without killing the lifetimer because I want to return it before the 30 mins are up maybe. God damn.

I don't think it's Gorilla glass on this one. Unless Corning is able to make curved Gorilla glass now.

Almost all Android phones use glass displays. The case I would probably suggest is something like a Case Mate Barely There or an Incipio Feather. Although I haven't checked if they're available yet.

do these cases cover the screen? sorry if it's a n00b question.

Nandroid backup. Then copy the folder onto your pc. Should be under Clockworkmod or something. Then nandroid restore on your new phone. Let me know which bestbuy you goto and if you're successful in buying outright minus gift cards :) I have a gift card to use too haha

My NS after 1 week's worth of tinkering:

http://i53.tinypic.com/2w6x93q.png

Mods:
-CyanogenMod 7 Latest Stable
-XXKB3 GRI54 radio to replace the XXKB1 GRI40 radio from CM7 (685 kB/s vs 539 kB/s on 3G Speedtest)
-Sublime CM7 theme
-Launcher Pro with 2 docks and 5 home screens
-Simi clock
-Opera Mobile
-Better Keyboard 8
-Go SMS Pro
-Winamp
-Dark wallpaper for longer battery life :P

My 1154 on Quadrant is pretty damn low compared to other NS running CM7 getting 1700... weird.

See here for what it offers beyond vanilla 2.3.3: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Features

Most of the stuff I use are the visual tweaks to the UI and some battery saving tweaks on the way colors are rendered on the phone.

There are other ROMs out there, which you can read up on here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955719

Which one is right for you, whether stock or otherwise is up to you.

ALL Nexus S from ALL carriers are not locked. that's the appeal of the phone.

only difference is that some use different frequencies from others. i'm sure the three major carriers, ergo Koodo, have phones that can work with each other's networks, but i think there's one Canadian carrier that uses the AWS (T-Mobile) version of the phone.

edit: looking up online, the Mobilicity version uses different bands from the major three carriers. see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Google_Nexus_S

Mobilicity has the T-mobile (GT-I9020T) version while the rest of the carriers use the AT&T (GT-I9020A) version.

m3thods
04-16-2011, 09:26 AM
here it's wind and mobilicity that use AWS (1700/2100, essentially the T-Mobile/original version) for 3G. everything else (including the big3 and their subsidiary brands- koodo virgin fido etc) use the other version.

I can tell you from experience that my Captivate easily breezes through the day with moderate usage with ~35% left (40-50 texts, ~5mins of phone calls, ~15minutes of gaming, moderate facebook/RSS/browsing).

Mind you this is on 0% brightness (I bump it up if I really can't see), and running JuiceDefender Ultimate to take care of turning off my 3g/wifi on sleep. I also have a few other schedules that help. Apparently JD is supposed to use more battery than it saves, but I haven't found that to be the case.

Definitely it's dependant on the user, but most smartphones (especially with large beautiful screens) will probably only get you through the day if you use it normally. Even with my old iPhone (3g) and my gf's 4, we find ourselves charging them daily.

IIRC you're running CM7? Certain ROMs give better battery life out of the box. I think the top two are Firefly and Serendipity, but they're just 2.2.1. However with the i9000 GB source released, I would give it 2 weeks before you get some 2.3.3 customs other than CM7 and MIUI.

But yeah anyone comment on the NS battery life? Same as other smartphones? Worse?

JD is that an i9000 ROM with the gingerbread source? I know the captivate is starting to get gingerbread ROMs (besides CM7 and MIUI) since xcal from xda has released that GB kernel of his.

Besides that, it kind of makes me wonder if it's even worth getting a Nexus S over the captivate since essentially all the hardware is the same minus the filesystems (though there's already ext4 fixes for the captivate), especially since the Nexus S is low on aesthetic customization in comparison to the Galaxy S series.

i think the gaps at the top and bottom were purposely cut due to the curved screen. Alot of screen protectors can't seem to stay on on the top/bottom edges.

So has anyone bought screen protectors locally and where? I searched at all local phone retailers and they all said the phone was too new. Don't wanna wait a week for shipping from SGP as well....

I just recently went from a dumbphone to a nexus S. Today I added data to my account so I am fairly new to smartphones and I have some questions:

1)My phone says I am on Roger network but I am using Fido, is this normal?I bought my phone at BB but I bought the Koodo version no contract. I think my old phone still said Fido.

2) For the longest time I couldn't connect to the internet, I changed the settings as per the sticky but nothing. Then I changed it back to default and enabled Data Roaming and now it works, but I thought Data Roaming is for when I am outside the country and I can't access the Fido network, so is it safe to leave it on?

3)When I am connected to WiFi will the phone use the WiFi instead of Data or should I turn off data before using WiFi?I don't want to download a lot of stuff thinking I am only using WiFi

TIA

JordanLee
05-09-2011, 09:14 PM
Can't answer 1) but for 2) You can't connect cause it thinks you're on Rogers. Thats why you have to enable data roaming to access the foreign network.

3) As long as you see the wifi bars and the 3G symbol is gone, you're good to go. No need to turn off data beforehand.

Hey guys... So I just switched over to the Nexus S a few days ago from the iPhone 4... So far I have it rooted and have the CM7 installed... within 2 days I somehow used up the remainder of my 100 megs of data and went over it by 33 megs without me doing much on the phone. Any ideas what might of caused it?

I got a text from Rogers yesterday saying I'm at 80% usage and I didn't DL anything with it. I just used it normally (text, check FB, surf, check NHL scores) and was connected to wifi at home the whole night. I woke up today to find a text from Rogers that says I'm at 100% usage. So I don't know what's wrong and why the Nexus S would use the carrier data while it was connected to wifi when I was sleeping...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

easy way to get 2.3.4 with CM7 features is to flash SuperAOSP... its default kernel is fast and the rom has great battery life (i spent two days in Kelowna without charging with moderate internet use). that way you get the good stuff of CM7 and 2.3.4 combined.

for people that wanna go tinker with the phone more, try netarchy's kernels. OC'ing and UV'ing is freaking addicting.

When I went to pick it up the two salespeople were like "oh sorry there was a screw up people aren't supposed to buy it like this but we will let you do it" or something along those lines. They don't charge you when you place your order online, only after you pick it up so I would say do it and if they start hassling you just walk away. Nothing to lose.
