VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Police Department joined twitter this morning, racking up over 800 followers 20 minutes after its first post.

Const. Anne Longley is providing the quickie files that will give her audience a 24-hour glimpse into the number of calls handled by the police each day.

"You will see a variety of police calls which will give you insight into what the VPD does on a typical day. Overnight stories will be 1st," Longley tweeted.

And the day's first minor-emergency: Trolley wires down on Granville Bridge. One lane open southbound and two open northbound.

If they want to improve their image.
They should put call times, and response times.

It could totally work in their favor netting them more funding too.

Cops on Twitter = too much time on their hands.

Get back to work solving these problems, the taxpayers don't pay you to surf the internet

but they tweet via cell phones as the crime happens, doesnt take up that much time.

i think these tweets answer the question of "what are our cops doing with our tax money?" kinda interesting to see what they encounter on a day to day basis besides handing out traffic violations for going 55kmh or turning right without fully stopping when the light turns red

Nah, there's a dedicated person doing this. Apparently there's quite a few police departments that tweet.

remember that this is just a ONE DAY thing, just for today. or so they say. it's just a sneak peek at the calls list. it's not like there's a VPD person tweeting all of this as a full-time job. it's just a media VPD person doing this just for today.

also, i'm pretty sure the sensitive cases like homicides or gang stuff won't get posted.

Does anyone know the point of this twittering? Is it to let people know what they do daily and give the public more confidence in them?

I'd hate to have to deal with what cops have to day to day.

Pretty much everyone is always pissed off with them for what they do; either their response time is bad or they're an inconvenience

is this to help VPD get back their dignity and the trust of the public back from their recent fck ups?
this is major fail. I dont need to know what these pigs are doing 24 hrs as long as they do their job with honesty :banghead:
