Word has it that some kid threatened some other kid that he has a gun during class (Mirani's class for those of you who were from Gladstone). Friend of mine drove by and there were choppers all over the place. Expect it to be on the news tonight. Shiiiiit that school went downhill after my grad year left. >:

Message from Superintendent: Dec 9 Gladstone Secondary lockdown
Schools & Students

December 9, 2010

To parents, staff and students,

Re: Lockdown situation at Gladstone Secondary School

The safety and security of our students and staff is of paramount importance. It is reassuring and with a great deal of relief for everyone that we can report the positive outcome of the recent events at Gladstone.

As you know, the Vancouver Police Department initiated a “Code Red” lockdown alert at Gladstone Secondary at about 2:35 pm today. The School Liaison Officer advised police that a possible armed intruder was in the school. Staff at the school were immediately advised and the school proceeded to a lockdown.

The first step in this process is to ensure that all students and staff are in safe locations in their classrooms. School Board personnel along with school administration were in immediate and direct contact with the Vancouver Police and Emergency Response Team and remained so throughout this process. At around 3:15 pm, police began releasing students from the building. The police established a release point at Vanness and Gladstone. Some grade 7 students were in the school and were released first.

We wish to thank all parents, students and staff for their patience and understanding during this very challenging time. The calm, patient approach is of great help to the students and staff who remain in the school during these unsettling situations. We also extend sincere thanks to the Vancouver Police Department for the swift and measured response to this matter.

On behalf of the Board and staff of the Vancouver School District, thank you to all concerned for helping to make a very difficult set of circumstances be resolved into a successful outcome.

Sincerely,

Steve Cardwell

Superintendent

you have no idea what gladstone was like in the late 80s - late 90s I went to Lord Selkirk elementary and went to the McDs for lunch there would always be a fight between the McDonalds and the Hotel there always bloody

as I was getting near Highschool age there would be major clique fights with weapons chains, machetes, bats etc it hit the news too a few times when the police stopped the fights before they happened and found caches of weapons in trunk cars (ended up moving but most my friends were at gladstone so i would always end up there somehow :D )

etc etc etc etc Gladstones actually been pretty good in the 00s

Clark Park, FTW!!

East Van Rules, Amen.

My friends went to Gladstone in the 70's. Pretty lame back then. So was China High (Britannia). All the action was at Templeton, where my cousins went to school and Van Tech. Van Tech was like the dumping grounds - where all the suspended kids from the other high schools ended up.

that actually sounds pretty common for a east-van school..i think it started getting better after the mid 2000's

It's still happening as of today. The kids who get kicked out of Templeton all transfer to Van Tech :lol

Dumb question here, but is it true that BC highschools no longer have a standardized Provincial Exam(s) at the end of Grade 12?

12-09-2010, 11:08 PM
^yeah I heard about something like that. How Provincial Exams aren't required now.

Total BS. I remember studying my ass off for 6 provincials back then in 2003 hahaha

Honyoung

its only english 12 now that provincials are required all the rest are optional

slammer111
12-09-2010, 11:22 PM
^ It's always been like that, but I thought I heard something about people not needing to write other Provincials, even if applying for University.

wuuhoo
12-09-2010, 11:28 PM
^I think in the past, you need to write the provincial for your courses to get in/apply for university.

Now you can apply/get in with just final exam(s) + english provincial

yeap..it's optional now for applying to university (they might still need english 12). This used to be the case if you just wanted to graduate HS

what a fucking joke, i blame our provincial govt once again. It's the reason for the overinflated admission grades.

Thinking back to my highschool days (which wasn't long ago; grad of 08) I now realize how almost every year, someone I made contact with in school passed away. Gr.8 was my counselor Ms. Dedijer (sp?), gr.9 was my band teacher Mrs. Dreger, and gr.10 was a close friend of mine. Not long after grad, a fellow classmate passed away as well. Weird :(

Someone in my sister's grade had passed away too (this was after I left).. I think maybe around 2007. Then there's Doug Drummond (former Burnaby mayor and math teacher) who passed away in 2006, and a fairly recent vice principal who passed away after he had a heart attack jogging or something..Can't remember his name. The latter two had already left and retired, but still :/
