Man I have just finished both Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 recently, and I would like to discuss how it ended up for you guys.

SPOILERS FOR THOSE THAT HAVE NOT PLAYED MASS EFFECT

For Mass Effect 1, I went soldier and war survivor. This was my first time playing, and I kind of rushed through it without talking to any of my crew members or doing enough side missions to bring my paragon up. I ended up not being able to convince Wrex, so Ashley killed him. On the mission when you decide to choose either Kaiden or Ashley, I couldn't let Kaiden die, his biotic abilities were too useful. On deciding whether to attack Sovereign or save the Council, I chose to attack Sovereign. I genuinely thought this was the right thing to do. And finally, I choose Captain Anderson to be the Council leader.

For the second game, I believe I chose Infiltrator. I do not recall any important decisions in this game, but overall, Tali died (I choose to hand in the evidence to clear her name in her side mission), and Jacks died (I wanted to bang Miranda). And, I also decided not to explode the Collector's base, or whatever it was at the end of the game.

I played Paragon through and through. No one died (except for Kaidan in the first game) and I got to have sexy time with Kelly. And Miranda. Not simultaneously, sadly. That would have been awesome.

For future references, there's a spoiler tag by adding "[S,POILER]" in the beginning, and "[/S,POILER]" to end it (without the comma after the "S", of course).

For my main playthrough, I

Mass Effect:
-Was a war hero
-Was Paragon the entire way
-Kept Wrex alive
-Kaiden got killed in action/Ashley lives
-Got into Ashley's pants
-Spared the Rachni queen
-Saved the council
-Anointed Captain Anderson as council leader

Mass Effect 2:
-Was Paragon the entire way
-Got into Miranda's pants
-Accidentally got Kelly and many of the Normandy crew staff killed because I took my time saving them :(
-Kept every single team member alive in the suicide mission (reverted to a previous save after 3 members originally died )
-Destroyed the Collector's base and told Illusive Man to go fuck himself.

Yes, I forgot that I couldn't even save Kelly, the Doctor, and the crew. It seems like I'm doing a lot of things wrong.

On a side note: Did anyone just feel really bad when the collectors were capturing Kelly into the elevator? It's amazing how the story and interaction draws you into this game, and it made me exhibit emotions towards these characters.

Also, when you were controlling Joker, did anyone die the first time? On the 4th level, you had to wait for the collectors to walk by. I talked to my friends, and they all fell for it. lol

Did anyone catch this in the game? I was eating and I left my character idle then I saw this.

Joker is a great character, I wonder if this was Seth Green's idea.

For this i regret going with femshep. sexy time with garrus made me feel unclean.
on a side note, i saw a random pic of yvonne strahovski and thought "holy shit, she looks exactly like miranda with blond hair." did some digging and found out they scanned her face and she did the voice.

do you guys play on easy difficulty?

I always play my games on the hardest setting I can, so I get satisfaction knowing that I beat it.

But saying that, I cant do shit unless im a Soldier, having all the guns is way more important than having a couple of spells.

Both play throughs I did, I picked soldier, I just couldnt beat it as any other class

First playthrough was done on normal doing the paragon path as a soldier. Second playthrough, I played as a Renegade FemShep on Insanity (hardest setting) using the Sentinel class. It's probably the most boring class of them all, but it's the easiest one to use if you wanna get through Insanity difficulty the easiest way coz you have an extra tech shield that you can constantly keep bringing out once it goes down as long as you wait for the quick cooldown to set.

any tips on items/characters or whatever i need to know before i start the first game?

Most fun class would, hands down, have to be Vanguard though for anyone just starting the game or wanting to do another run of ME2. For ME1 playthroughs, your best bet is the soldier class as the ME1 classes were pretty imbalanced and kind of shitty. ME2 though, every class is its own win.

I just finished it, only took 12 hours,

dont want to spoil it for anyone, but there is VERY little dialoge,
there is very little romancing,
loop holes everywhere,
and all the decisions you make in the first 2 games become irrelevant because the games story is almost set in stone aside from a few little choices you can make,

I remember reading early interviews from bioware devs, that said all the choices will have a dire effect, in fact there was zero effect.

even if you have multiple romances in the previous games, none of that shit gets addressed, just a few dialogue boxes. (which one do you chose?)

and the ending is always the same,

The entire time I was playing the game I was like, where is all the dialogue? where is all the story? where is all the reference from the previous games? where are all the little side datapads/emails that reveal past secrets of the game/story? why isnt this game tieing up any loose ends from the previous ones?

nothing,

in fact when I finished it the ending seemed so shitty, that I figured I had definitly missed something.

but alas, upon looking at the bioware forums, there are 100,000 people who feel the same way.

the Dev's didnt seem to care at all about the story / lore of the mass effect franchise

Bioware ruined the mass effect with this game, my recommendation is dont buy, just torrent it, severe waste of money.

Didnt EA/Bioware release "DownloadableContent" before even the game was released?!

The DLC contain key plots in the game story.
To get the DLC, you either get the collectors edition of the game ($20) or the download it on the day of launch on the regular edition for ($10).

So they create a full game, cut part of it out and sell that part as downloadable content for more money.
This was on LAUNCH DAY!!
It would be fair if it was few months later, where they work on the content after the release.

Not going to support EA on this one!!

I don't see any threads that voice your same concern (this is in the BioWare forums, Mass Effect General Discussion - there is no main Mass Effect 3 forums). The only main topic being discussed is the fact that DLC was released on Day 1 etc.

12 hours is pretty damn fast, did you do all the quests etc.?

I agree. 12 hours is amazingly short and I've been enjoying every moment of it. I'm playing on insanity and it's annoying at times because I just want to get a level done, but it reminds me of times when old video games were hard as fuck by default.

why not read the bioware forums before you buy it?

I played it on PC not console.

all those side "conversations" are just war assets, no I didnt listen to any of them, just whip through the whole citadel, whip through all the planets and collect all the artifacts, then just whip back through the citadel, done, none of those conversations have anything to do with the story at all.

also, use sniper rifles, they are OP in the game, one hit kill everything.

Trust me once you get half way through the game it starts getting real gay, real quick.

there are no environments to walk around, just citadel and normandy,

the entire game can be summed up in,

step one, run through entire citadel to get all the artifact quests,

step 2 run through all planets and get all artifacts (hint, when the reapers come after you for scanning too much, just keep going in and out of the system over and over until you spawn right next to the artifact, no need to leave and come back)

step 3, do all quests one at a time, they are all pretty much run in a straight line shooting anyway.

done,

optional step, choose love interest, no dialoge, just simply pick which one you want, and have 1 love scene with them before the last mission.

also if you guys have actually played the first 2 games and imported your characters, have you noticed that all the choices you made have had zero effect in this one yet?

kill council or save council, doesnt matter, same council is still there,
give udina or anderson counsilman, doesnt matter, udina becomes counselor.
kill or save rachni queen? doesnt matter, rachni queen there anyway,
renegade or paragon? doesnt matter, ending and dialogue options stay the same,
killed or saved wrex? doesnt matter, the same dialogue and galactic options are there,
killed or saved kaiden or ashley?, doesnt fuckin matter, same dialogue.

ect ect.

every decision made in the previous games have no bearing on this one whatsoever, except for a few different dialogue options, the story remains unaffected.

a person playing mass effect 3 for the first time, would have the same experience as a person who played the first 2, because nothing mattered in the first 2.

The final mission took close to 2 hours to complete. Make sure you save often cause there was a couple of really rough spots. There was one part where you had to take on 5 brutes *_*

Haha I think I got roughly the same playtime as you.

Regarding the ending:

I'm actually pretty content with the ending. Not disappointed with HOW it ended but I felt the devs could have put a little more into it. Went with the paragon ending where you control the reapers and youtubed the rest cause I don't think i'll have time doing multiple playthroughs.

I was already kinda expecting Shepard to die in the final trilogy so it wasn't a HUGE suprise to me though it would have been nice if there was an option for him to stay alive

What I didn't like about the ending was the fact that they didnt show what happens afterwards (regardless which path you picked). Felt like the devs just decided to stop and call it a day after Joker + some crew members get off the normandy.

Some other gripes I had with the game was your crew didnt feel as solid as the second game. Would have been nice if Grunt and some of the other Mass effect 2 crew could rejoin the crew instead of being simply "war assets"

Can anyone else confirm if previous game decisions have any impact? I was given ME3 for the PS3, but have save files for ME1 and ME2 on PC. Just wondering if it's worth going out to buy ME3 for the PC. Either way, seems like the consensus is the ending is prettty bad.

Ending was aight. Typical hero ending. Gonna start from my last save point and choose the alternate ending. The weapons in the game was a big jump from ME2. So many guns to choose from. now it's bed time :)

Mass Effect 3: New Ending Incoming - PlayStation 3 News at IGN (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/122/1221273p1.html)

Don't really know how I feel about this, on the plus side we get a new ending, but on the negative side it shows that Bioware caved and doesn't really support their writers.

first time playing Mass Effect games, I think I am almost halfway through, this is on my PC btw.... game is an obvious port from console, but graphics are still good.... uhmm.. I find myself involved with the story best I can, but digging the game very much overall..

but I wanna tear my hair out when I'm walking or running around over and around obstacles, for example in the middle of a gunfight I'm holding sprint button and I end up accidentally taking cover by nearby obstacles because the sprint button is mapped to the exact same button as take cover, there's no way to change it..

literally the worst feeling character movement of any 3rd person game I have ever played.... firstly he walks way too slow, and when he sprints he's like a fcking juggernaut who can barely turn so I find myself never sprinting during a mission because I ALWAYS get stuck taking cover or hitting a wall

or am I missing something since I'm a first time player ?? when I'm walking up to an object I have to jump over, I literally have to crouch/kneel/take cover and then wait for the arrow to pop up saying jump over this and then jump over, I can't just run and jump over like you normally would in any other game

You should be able to jump over an object by double tapping the space bar. The whole running and taking cover system is worst when your playing multil-player since enemies pop out of nowhere.

if you actually took the time to read and do all the side quests in ME1 you would appreciate ME2 so much more. that and the fact that the controls feel so much smoother compared to the first game on the console

gonna hop on ME3 right after

heard the ending in ME3 sucked though lol

just finished it, damn I didn't know an ending could have so many plot holes, lol, felt like I was watching a straight to DVD low budget hollywood movie... now I understand the frustrations of hardcore fans who have been through all the previous Mass Effect games, and I gotta say I feel lucky I'm not one of them otherwise I'd be pretty choked too, left all incomplete and unsatisfied, it's like banging a hot chick and just when you bout to bust you stop... I've only played ME3 not knowing fully the whole story at all, and the ending still gave me blue balls

this guy nails it pretty damn good in one simple paragraph, Mass Effect 3 Ending Deconstruction - Twenty Sided (http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=15395)

"If you are crazy enough to make a three-game series that ends on a black note with no questions (sensibly) answered and no sense of closure, then the least you can do is make sure the things you do say at the end doesn't contradict what has come before, or introduce new plot holes in the last minutes of the game. This is what Mass Effect did, and it's what has players so angry. Everyone dies, the bad guys turn out to be ridiculous, we don't find out what happens next, and the things we're shown don't make any sense. It is the most insufferably frustrating, obtuse, and nihilistic ending I've ever seen"

I played the game through, and I'm on my second playthrough now. I really enjoyed the game itself and even got teary-eyed a few times...like when Thane kicked the bucket and his son was praying over him and I get why people disliked the ending. I am playing through again, however, because apparently if your EMS (Effective Military Score) is >7,000 you get a teensy tiny sneak peak at what the ending really is...or isn't.

I would suggest that the rest of you join me just for shits and giggles.

Also for optimal EMS:

Support the gung-ho civilian on the Embassy presidium
Don't give spectre authorization for the gun to the chick in the medical wing
Don't give spectre authorization for the chick to transfer away from cerberus
Don't talk to the two cops after the Cerberus raid

Did I miss any?

I got robbed of 60,000cr on PS3 Multiplayer mode :(
I tried buying a Spectre pack and i got a message saying a problem has occurred and to contact support.

I then see my credits got returned, but I still wanted to buy my Spectre pack, so I quit the game, went back in, and noticed my 60K credits were gone, with no new equipment...

Just a warning to you PS3 players

Finally finished the game a couple of days ago.

I spent just over 50 hours completing almost every single thing there is to do.

The game was amazing (& emotionally gripping) overall..... except for the ending. I can see where all the hate is coming from. It was a masterpiece until the final 10 minutes.

Here's pretty much all the main reasons why it did blow. *Spoilers below*

I wouldn't even bother playing 3 if you haven't played 2.

I'd say finish 1 as well for the full experience. It's really not the same without it.

The default decisions made for you in ME3 if you're not importing from ME2 are pretty bad. You'll get better enjoyment out of ME3 if you've imported from ME2.

PS3- You're stuck playing ME2, reading the online comic for ME1.

Wasn't that the whole problem though ? the people who invested so much time into the story of Mass Effect only to have ME3's ending absolutely shit on each and every one of them.

I guess if you do play ME1 and ME2 invest all that time into the wonderful storyline, then DO NOT finish ME3 the way it is right now, WAIT for that extra add on ending they are to be releasing soon.

Vansterdam
04-19-2012, 03:24 PM
did you try craigslist and eb lol you can def get it for 10-20$

i would sell you my copy but im currently playing ME1 again on hardcore

if you have a save file from ME1 , you will get some extra xp,levels, minerals when you start ME2
(theres also a achievement in ME2 that requires you to either beat ME2 twice or beat it once with a save file from ME1 thats about 50G right there)

for playthrough its about 25-30 hours for ME1 if you read, and do most of the main/side quests

and i wold say about 25-30 for ME2

after considering how the original ending sucked so badly and i felt ripped off after spending hours completing all 3 games, i kinda wished they had these extra cutscenes added originally

a little too late but meh.
