I had a quick look around google and couldn't really find a direct answer....

I just picked up a Razer mouse, has super high DPI, and it works great with out using a mousepad. Providing I'm using a clean surface, is there any risk of damaging the mouse from not using one?

should be alright... I would think most of the wear and tear would be at the little glide pads at the bottom, otherwise the laser itself shouldn't take any damage

The mouse will work fine. I've been using my razor for over 3 years on a wooden desk.
If anything, the only wear and tear will be on the Teflon feet... Otherwise the mouse works like a dream.

Personally I think mouse pads just clutter the desk up

honestly, i'd really only recommend a mouse pad if the surface you're using doesn't work well. most desks and tables work fine - but some people work on tables with textured wood, where the grain sticks out a bit. That or glass - which doesn't always work well with optical mice, but works fine with most laser mice.

Teflon feet last forever though - I've never actually seen one so worn out that you can't use the mice.

personally, I use a mouse pad on my desk because it's a nice oak desk - and I don't want to wear out the desk... which is worth a lot more than the mouse.
