can any of you guys fill me in on how successful he is in Asia now? and how is his lyrical vocab is compared to when he rapped in English, cuz he was a sick freestyler we all know that, he could lay down crazy verses I'm curious to see if that translated over well when he started rapping in canto
Born n raised in the US, went from naggered out style, bald head hip hop wear to looking like a typical asian guy, looks like a completely different person. Some call it textbook sellout tactic, but people interested in money would call it good business.
Seems to me he's making much more money in Asia than he ever did here in North America

I don't live in HK nor do I follow MC Jin but these are my thoughts on how successful he has become over there. I basically see this guy pretty often now from hosting shows, commercials to even seeing him in a movie etc. Now my knowledge of the Hip Hop scene in HK is poor but from what I recall other rappers like LMF, 34 Herbs etc never made it this big in terms of being mainstream and accepted like this. I think it's safe to say he has made it pretty good in HK terms at least.
dachinesedude
12-19-2010, 12:49 PM
Jin shouldnt be called a sell out, everyone knows that he would never make it big in the US, not because he isnt good, its just that people there would never accept a "chinese rapper" there, i mean look at white rappers, there arent many of those that are successful either, and US is somewhat a white country.
I like his move to HK, just shows how shitty hong kong rappers are. He goes there as a ABC but owns all those 34 Herbs crap at their own language in freestyle. He's going where the money is, at the end of the day gotta make a living, nothing wrong with that
sure win!!

it hurt me to even watch a little bit of that
im sure he's happier acting like a goofball in HK than he would have been acting hardcore in LA; pretty sure he's more famous than he would be too

Its unfortunate because he will now NEVER MAKE IT in the US. I mean what would he rap about? Rehabilition from gang life to HK life? He can't rap about guns anymore or living the thug life.

Guys.
It's 24Herbs. not 32.
And 24Herbs is crap. They attempt to mimic whatever is popular in NA in Canto.

Chinese rap SUCKS! Its not cause Jin isn't a good rapper, its just that its extremely hard to make Canto sound good in a rap song. Anyone else agree??

rapping is just a charismatic way of talking and making it rhyme to a beat.
you can do that in any language.

You dont have to define what rap is to prove your point. But the fact is, most of the rhymes in canto songs are WEAK. Using simple ass words to rhyme one after the other.

To be honest, my cantonese is not that strong. It's not my mother tongue anyways. But here's a cantonese song with FLOW. The artist is from Malaysia. MC Yan comes out in the end.

To think Jin started from this....(excuse the subs, best audio quality on this one)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs4xaj68eWw
I've listened to his NA stuff, seemed generic for the time since he was probably marketing to appeal in the US rap scene (lots of race card played). I haven't been keeping tabs on him, but to see that he's successful in HK (even though I don't speak Canto) probably meant he wasn't getting any exposure in the US at all.

It was probably a low production free rap song for the HK government, what do you expect? Look at his Free-CD back then from 7-11. Some tracks has good beats, some has good lyrics, but others' were crap. He's doing free shit to just get more people into the rap community in HK. I went on some HK rap forum once and people in HK actually Harsh hate on him, called him a sell-out and weak lyrics. But honestly, I doubt any of those hongers can do better. Just look at that pathetic HK rap battle crap. The winner is fucking weaksauce....

He doesn't really churn out that much songs now, the last album I remember him releasing was with Hanjin Tan, and I only downloaded the day after I heard Hanjin live. Jin's voice to me it's even less appealing in Canto, and his lyrics aren't that great. But then its Canto and its overall a harder language to rap to.
I think he now makes a bulk of his money through commercials and what not, for example he is a spokesperson for a tutoring company. I'll try to find you a pic later on. But the pic you posted of him isn't nearly honger enough, hes even more so now LOL.
p.s. I just saw a show he hosted on TVB on Bruce Lee last night.

I don't pay much attention to his career, but apparently he's doing great in this little city. He doesn't speak 100% fluent cantonese, doesn't understand fully and he doesn't have a pretty face, but his talent was well recognized in the hk entertainment industry. He's hosting a lot of big TV shows and partnering with big stars.
The only article I read about him is on a investment magazine (funny, right?), talking about his money management. Apparently he's like any famous rapper around the world, all controlled by a producer (in USA) and know nothing about about saving money. Of course he has changed he now owns a studio writing songs and shit. Is he making big buck? Hell yeah, but still only a fraction compare with those #1 rappers in the States. His appearance and rap style need to be changed to fit the local audience.
Anyway, he's one smart guy. Pros to him.

hey lau = pull the anchor up = a government slogan which means "Act Now" in English.
It supposed to mean the current govn't policies are not going anywhere, "hey lau" will allow the whole situation to move forward.
Something like that.

Oh there's no doubt abt that, I freakin hate fama, they're disgrace to the people of Hong Kong (not just rap), we're relegated to churning out acts like that, what a shame.
Random fact: Jin's "ABC" (debut album), most of it was produced by Far East Movement.
I still love this one, always makes you happy to listen to it.

Jin's success is only relative to where he makes his career.
His American career went nowhere, and was going nowhere, despite him being a decent rapper. But compared to his Asian peers, in Asia, he's done pretty well for himself.
I don't understand the Cantonese dialect one bit, but purely based on his lyrics, I would say he was better as an American rapper.
But that's largely because the rap scene is Asia tries much too hard to emulate American rap while maintaining a sense of originality. When you try to be original by emulating something else, you end up with a bunch of wannabe actors.
Is there a version with English subtitles? Looks good, but I can't understand Cantonese :/
