I'm currently studying at UBC Okanagan and am planning on majoring in Geography. However, after finishing all the first year introductory to geography courses, I found out that the specific field I want to major in is Geographic Information System and Cartography. As I'm planning to transfer campus in second year, I was looking over the course lists in Vancouver. I found out that all of Vancouver campus' courses seem to be Political Geography major.
Are there any GIS major courses in UBC Vancouver?
Thanks in advance!

Have you looked at the GEOB courses listed in ssc?
GIS/Cartography/Remote Sensing courses are listed under GEOB instead of GEOG for the Vancouver campus.
GIS courses are GEOB 270, 370, and 479
Cartography courses are GEOB 372 and 472

OH! i see!
thankyou very much!
Good to know fellow RS member studying in GIS! I studied GIS @ SFU. My personal word of advice is to try to do coop if possible! A lot of people after their bachelors continue on with an advance diploma in GIS at BCIT.

Yeah I did coop, at 2 different BC ministires. GIS is pretty cool, profs usually try to show you the fancy stuff. Cartography is a must in GIS, most entry level GIS jobs focus on mapping / producing maps. Higher up positions involve more analysis, remote sensing, programming, scripting, database design etc.
PM me if you got anymore Qs. Goodluck!

i did the GIS program at BCIT, i personally thought it was a complete waste of time. Also, the GIS job market has been quite shitty. I currently have a job making maps, feel free to ask any question you have and i'll try to help to.

Late bump, but anyone else care to shed some light off this? It seems like a program that is well regarded, but I have another friend that did the program and did not have much success with it afterwards wrt to job prospects...
It is well regarded. You get to learn a lot of technical stuff, lots of programming etc. I actually take gis courses every fall/spring at BCIT to learn more (work covers for it luckily)!
Its just that there are so many gis grads (bcit, sfu, ubc etc) and there's not that many gis jobs out there.
