US officials believe at least 1,000 dead birds found in a small Arkansas town may have been frightened to death by fireworks.

Local residents woke on New Year's Day to find their town blanketed with dead birds, which fell over a two-kilometre radius.

Wildlife experts do not know why dead birds were not found anywhere else, but they are speculating that they could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail.

An Arkansas state ornithologist said they showed signs of trauma and noted similar events have occurred elsewhere.

Authorities started getting calls that birds were falling to earth and about 30 minutes before midnight on New Year's Eve.

They are wondering if revellers setting off fireworks could have startled the creatures from their roost and caused them to die from stress.

Meanwhile about 200 kilometres away, officials say 100,000 fish have died in the north-west of Arkansas.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says the bodies of drum fish were found along a 30-kilometre stretch of the Arkansas River.

'It is difficult to say how and why they died, but I was told by other scientists that it was not unheard of.

'Weather and things like starvation, if there is a food shortage, can cause this kind of sad event.'

But there have been many happier moments for the photographer, who has also spent a lot of time in Canada observing the wildlife there.
