At least they mark down their rotting vegetables and stale bread before they try to sell it.
I wonder what event caused CTV to send in hidden cameras in the first place that captured the video?

Probably many unhappy customers or disgruntled employees calling in requesting them to do a segment on it.

Nope.
It apparently was a CTV worker/correspondent who noticed it before and then started investigating.

My GF shops there almost every week. Good thing we pay the extra and get our meat from Safeway or Costco (hopefully it's not an issue there).
Some of the beef at Superstore looks so bad, to the point it's turning brownish-green - it's pretty gross how blatant they are about putting crap on the shelves.

Not surprising given that its Superstore, they've always been noted for their horrible cuts of meat and produce. Though personally I've always refused to shop at Superstore cause there are just way too many people there and its just chaos along with their horrible meat and produce.

x2 I'd rather pay the extra few dollars/cents at Save-On/Safeway/Thrifties.
To save a few extra bucks, I hit up Costco.
Or better yet, don't be lazy, and source out a half decent butcher in your area. They do exsist still, and they offer a MUCH better/healthier meat product than your grocery store. Plus you get to support a small business, and hopefully local farmers:thumbsup:

I've bought packaged sandwich meat at SuperStore which when I got home i found was brown when it should have been a pink colour. They were pretty good about it when I took it back but I think'll buy my meat elsewhere

I don't get why people even shop at Superstore. Their stores are depressing and ugly, they have very limited selections, and sell mostly shoddy goods.
Grocers like Save-On-Foods and Pricesmart foods offer a much better shopping environment and higher quality foods. Heck, even Walmart is better than Superstore.
Edit: I guess the guys that failed this post love superstore so much that they get offended by the slightest critique. :speechless:

my family has been shopping at superstore way before superstore richmond was even built, we shop there for the cheap prices same with save-on & safeway, i just hate cosco cuz u need a membership card for there
& TnT was sold to loblaw in 2008 & nothing has change, its still the same

Why is everyone so paranoid now? You guys a panicking for no no reason."sheep" mentality at it's fullest.
Best before doesn't mean it's rotten. It means "best before".
This is probably an isolated incident that has been fixed. Just because their salmon is bad doesn't mean all the food they sell is shit.
I worked in the food industry for a Long time and there is worse shit out there.

Here is the process of how supermarket recycle their fish and poultries as far as I know.
1. If it's one big piece, it usually means it's still fresh given the best before date is correct.
2. If it's multiple pieces (2+) that look like they are sliced up (ie. - one side of the salmon is missing it's skin), then it obviously means it's been tampered with, like cutting out the bad part of the meat and using the good part.
3. And lastly, if it's marinated and store wrapped, it usually means it's not very good.
This info is from a guy I know that use to work in the fish department at T&T.

I don't get this, it seems like a lot of people are surprised by this type of product handling?
Did you really expect more from a corporation like Loblaws? Have you ever been in one of their stores? I still can't believe anyone thinks these guys have standards, because I know they sure don't follow any (ex-employee). Not in their product quality, sanitary upkeep, nor in their employee welfare (another shit flinging war caused by the union).
So how do they stay in business? Having the lowest prices by cutting corners to save money. Were addicted to saving because there's always somewhere cheaper right? Well this is what you get for trying to save a buck or two, and that's the sad truth.

i used to shop a lot at save on, and the meat there isnt too great. if you've ever bought a steak there you know what im talking about. i dont go to safeway much but it seems like their quality is just as bad. costco on the other hand has good quality stuff. the best is when you buy the wet aged sub primals and clean/portion them yourself. thats when you know you're working with good quality meat, because theres no reason for that to be spoiled.

No suprise. I have worked at a grocery store owned and operated by Loblaws. This company is all about doing everything on the cheap to increase their bottom line. I never buy anything "fresh" from them.
Fairway Market has similiar business model which is based in Victoria. Save money anyway possible.

Ya, worked at stupid store in the mid 90s and they were one of the worst employers ever. Took me 3 months to get my first paycheck because they fucked up my banking info and said we'll fix it next pay period time after time. They would constantly ask you to work Overtime but never pay you for it. Even though you swiped in and out they would cut your paycheck back so the management wouldn't go over on their budget hours to make it look like they were meeting there targets. You would be lucky if you got paid for 70% of the hours you worked every single paycheck that happened. They would then use the, we'll get you next time but they never would.
A Shady as fuck from the top down.

On the follow-up story last night they also mentioned Superstore had also been previously fined by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency after being caught changing the dates on lamb meat, a $100,000 fine I think they said.
It's just too chaotic to shop at Superstore, rather pay more to shop with less people and chaos around, same reason why I never go boxing day shopping.

Has anyone actually gotten sick eating meat from superstore?
It's not ethical but playing devils advocate, superstores not exactly the first chain to do this and no ones been sick eating the meat.
Stop trying to act holier than thou. "I only shop at..." and superstore is trash.
People shop at superstore cause they can't afford to shop at "high end" food retailers.
Again I'm just playing devils advocate.

Worst meat I've ever gotten was from T&T, before they got bought out.
Since then, I haven't found boneless beef shortrib on sale anymore :(
Anyways, cheap meat isn't just at superstore.
The best meat prices I have ever found were at Supermarket 88 on Victoria Drive. Their selection is acceptable, and their turnover is really good.
If you're really that poor, you start getting good at looking for these things.

always thought/knew it
their fish especially always looks randy
and a few times we spotted double wrapped items on meats that looked questionable (as if they just ripped the labels off but not the wrap and wrapped it again)
and once you could actually see the previous best before date and we brought it to the lady that was placing meats out and she was like "oh! wonder how that happened" and put it in her cart
still go there the odd time to buy beef ribs so rare to find it at the other groceries

all grocery stores try to sell meat/veggies/dairy products they shouldnt be, the managers push them to do this. its disgusting but they dont care because they just want money so they can look good and will only care when someone complains. just be smart and know how to tell the difference. for example a save on in richmond had green steaks employees told the manager that they couldnt put this out to sell to customers, 20mins later they caught a manager trying to put it on the shelf. same store had a power outage, dairy products were left out, dairy guys werent allowed to pull product, enjoy your mold caused by management.
