I briefly went through a bunch of the menus this morning, and so far I've marked down:
- Sip-resto $28
- Cin-cin $38
- Kerkis $18
- Nu $28
- Oru $28
- Pourhouse $28
- Provence marinaside $38
- Shady island $28

not too sure which ones I'd actually go to tho

Obsideon

Last time I went to Sip it was pretty fail, everything was way too salty.
Kerkis was excellent last year!

So many restaurants to choose from I'm not sure where to book!

Booked Nu and Bacchus - thinking about doing CinCin and C.

Any other recommendations? :)

** Edit: Oh yea btw, from Jan 6-16th - Coast is having a promo for 30% off the entire menu everyday till 630pm. Enjoy!

Cloud 9 food was nothing special. But I guess you go for the atmosphere.
Sip not good.
Cin-cin decent.
Nu good.
Stone Grill decent.

Hmm what about The Keg?

For $28 you get an appetizer + Prime Rib + Dessert, I wonder how big the Prime Rib is..does anyone know? If it's regular size then that's a pretty good deal :) If not then :(

Please do yourself a favour and not go to Cloud 9 lolz. Their food is totally 'meh'. Not worth it IMO. Went there once, and I'm never going back there again.

Can't wait for this! :) I wanna go try out Cin Cin!

Edit: Forgot to mention. One recommendation is Yew :) I was a regular there during the summer when I wasn't in school full-time. I love going there all the time. I love love love their sablefish :) I've yet to not like anything on their menu. *They make their own icecream too...and it's utterly huge. It's meant to be shared by two people at least hahaha It's served in a HUGE martini shaped glass cup*

so if it says 38 dollars, thats for the whole course for one person? or is it like one meal for 2
as some says 28 per person

Not sure which ones your looking at but the ones i've looked through all say per person..

Maybe this is confusing your.. for example
http://www.tourismvancouver.com/visitors/dining/dineout.details.php?id=2973
C's - $38 per person, set menu with no choices.. its a 5 course meal whatever you see is whatever you get ..

or

A lot of other places like Water St.Cafe
http://www.tourismvancouver.com/visitors/dining/dineout.details.php?id=3013
$28 per person, set menu with choices.. Its a 3 course meal but they give you different dishes to chooose from..

AKA there is 3 Prices: $18, $28, $38 - They are all set menus but depending on the restaurant they charge differently.. but yes they all should be per person. (Ex. C's = Fine dining, they charge $38... While Spaghetti Factory = Casual garbage, they charge $18)

My experience with dine out is usually the portion sizes are about 3/4 regular but it really varies from place to place. Some go all out, some give very little.

Mistral French Bistro is a must try imo. I went last year for dineout and had an awesome experience. Went back again after the on a regular night and the experience was just as good if not better. This is one of the few places imo at least that has given me the trifecta which is ambience, awesome service, and awesome food. Highly recommended

Boss took 9-10 of us to Mistral for Christmas lunch, and it was awesome. They also offered us a set menu at the time, and steak frites was one of the options. Most of us ordered it as our main, and all of our plates were clean afterwards.

I'm going there again (so that I can have steak frites again!), with 3 others who haven't gone yet. For $28 it's a pretty good price!

The time I went, the servers were cute french girls. ;)

Made reservations for The Keg in Burnaby so far. For those who aren't aware, The Keg has both a $28 and a $38 menu for Dine Out with differences occuring only in the entrees.

Also added Cloud 9 to the list.

Also wanted to ask, does everyone sitting at the table have to order from the Dine Out menu or is mixing of menus allowed?

miss_crayon
01-12-2011, 05:51 PM
^I don't think you have to follow everyone else if you want to order menu. I went to la terreza a couple years ago with 3 gfs and one of them ordered from the reg menu. Different restos might have different rules but I don't think it's an issue.

I have a question for those who have attended previous Dine Out's.

Do restaurants ever run out of certain dishes on their dine out menu? The reason I ask this, is that I made a reso for Sunday evening for my sisters birthday, and it would suck if they ran out of certain menu items and we only had 1 thing to choose from. I made a reservation for Cin Cin if that matters.

Just went to Provence on West 10th... wasn't great. I actually opted out of the $38 DOV menu... ordered from the regular menu instead, while the other ten people or so at my table did the DOV. Portions were pretty small, and overall food taste and presentation were lacking, in my opinion. Certainly not worth it in my view.

went to don fransisco last night and the food was good!

i suggest ordering these if you go for dine out

pasta for appy.. the salad wasn't that great

steak for entree since i got the seafood and tried both. Seafood wasn't the bomb

dessert.. go for fruits or sour ice cream, eat tiramisu if you like rum or some alcohol in it which makes it bitter.

4/10 small portions
Food: Me> Seared scallops (3 loonie-sized pieces) Potato crusted wild Salmon w/rissoto (cooked overdone and very bland) and dessert is the apple/cranberry crisp (nothing to write home abt)
Date> Seafood chowder soup (not expecting the tomato soup based) Wood fired rib-eyed steak (something really off, I think it was really tough and too fatty) dessert, choco mousse cake (didn't enjoy as it tasted like store bought and not fresh)

Overall: wasted $28 pp, would have been more happier using groupon deals.

C Restaurant: 1/10 wait. -5/10. Thank you for wasting my time.

If I can rate this lower, I would. I'm writing this review based on only what was experienced.

Severe issue with their idea of "Service" for fine dinig. DOV does not mean you are allowed to alienate or treat customers differently.

When you visit them make sure to ask for the Table for 2 in Wine Cellar.

Special includes:
- Proximity to the bathroom (you will get to meet every patron in restaurant because they will be looking into your direction when they are on the "GO")
- No privacy because of the security camera (they don't want you to steal their wine)
- You are the Fire hazard (because you will be blocking everyone from entering/exiting the wine cellar).

I don't want to be a dick, but someone dropped the ball in terms of placing the table where it was. Truly it shouldn't even have been there if they consider themselves a fine dining restaurant.

Walked out of restaurant and politely addressed the hostess on the way out.

Thank you C for wasting my time and calling yourself a fine dining restaurant. You have truly dropped the ball. Your first impression counts and you failed.

Will not repeat or ever visit even if comp'ed meal or paid for by others.

Thanks for the review! I'm going there next week, I was going to get the salad, but I guess I will skip that!

So far I've been to:

Cork & Fin - 5/10. Appetizers:I had raw oysters (3 of them - they were fresh), wife had salad (+$5 for prawns). I don't see why they charge extra for prawns considering the salad was only a couple leafs and a few pomegranate seeds. Entree 1: I had negitoro tuna (best dish of the menu), wife had prawn bisque (average). Entree 2: I had fish in tomato sauce (bland, was literally fish in tomato sauce), wife had steak (smallest steak I've ever seen - 4 oz maybe???). Portions were very small. I had to add on a steak tartare - was so bland, tasted like nothing. I had to add salt and pepper to it. (the one I had in Paris a couple months ago was so good!)

Banana Leaf - 8/10 - nothing fancy, items are from their regular menu, but you get a good selection of items. But the food was good, friendly staff/atmosphere, and I was full at the end.

Going to Las Margaritas tonight, and Don Francesco next week.

Went to Joe Fortes on Friday night. We had a large group (12 of us) and our table was ready right at our reserved time. Service was good as the place was absolutely packed. Water was always refilled, dirty plates were always removed promptly.

I had the beef carpaccio, sockeye salmon and the creme brulee. All were excellent, although I preferred my friends tiramisu more.

Overall a great dinner and well worth the price IMO. 9/10

Me and the hubs went to Joe Fortes last night!

Beef Carpaccio was a tad salty for my liking, steak and prawns was amazingggg (cooked to the perfect medium rare) and tiramisu was yums.

Hubs had the caesar salad, steak and prawns too and the creme brulee. I didn't try his dessert but he seemed to like it.

We also started off with some extra items, 4 local beach oysters for me and the king crab tempura (godsend..no joke).

The waitress was very attentive and for the price I can't complain! What a great deal!

Bah.. was gonna go to Mistral French Bistro but my friend went and told me the food was pretty bad.. he didnt like anything other then the dessert.. so i replaced my reso with

The Refinery
(gf + me)
Appy
- Beef Carpaccio : 8/10, beef was alright.. but the salad it came with was pretty good had a hint of nutty taste to it :)
- Tuna Crudo : 6.5/10 Tasted good came with pear + orange + fennel + lemon aioli.. didnt really taste the any basil.. (it was a basil crusted tuna)

Entree
- SUVEE\\\'D and SEARED SABLEFISH - 8/10 Solid dish.. sable fish that melted in my mouth with a slighty crisped skin.. + mussels + a tomato chorizo soup..
- Wild Mushroom fettucini - 9/10 I actually really liked this dish.. fettucini was cooked perfectly.. sauce had a nice flavour to it and they didnt skimp out on sauce.. to bad the dish wasnt bigger and i saw the add pancetta option :(

Dessert
- Tarte Tatin : 7/10 Solid dessert.. a hot pear/cranberry flat pie with icing streaked across the plate..
- Profiteroles : 6/10 nothing special.. gf really liked it though.. tasted very similiar to the Bearded Papa cream buffs minus the chocolate sauce..

Overall
Food - 7.5/10 Satisfied and will be going back in the future :)
Service - 9/10 Friendly, on the ball, told us we had a 2 hour limit but didnt rush us at all :)
Ambiance - 9/10 Nice small cozzy place

2 more places to go! cant wait to try Le Terrazza + Poor Italian :)

Went to Cin Cin last night.

Had the squid to start which was one of the best appetizers I have had in a long long time.
Pork Chop for my main was also very good, cooked perfectly, tender, I wasn't a fan of the applesauce on the side, sort of tasted like Motts. The cabbage it came with was excellent though and really brought a good rustic element. Something different than potatoes or rice.

Tiramisu was good. Lighter than most tiramisu's I have tried before, it came in an edible bowl which was really cool. Service was prompt, although not that friendly.

8.5/10 (would have been 9 but the server took it down .5)

A few friend's went to Cin Cin last week and they told me it was the worst DOV entree they had this year. The Pork Tenderloin was super dry and tough, like chewing on a towel glazed in canned applesauce...

I went to Horizon's yesterday, great view but I was freezing my ass off on the mountain haha the food was just so-so;
Appetizier of fried Fanny Boy Oysters were fresh and crunchy - yum! My NY steak wasn't very good and the Chocolate Creme Brulee was gross, way too sweet, you could look around the other tables and notice that barely anyone else touched it either, but the OTHER dessert, the Pear Tart was delicious!

Joe Fortes was really great, awesome menu! Can't go wrong with Surf'n Turf at Joe's!

Just went to La terrazza tonight :) Solid experience !

Appy
Duck Confit Salad - 7.5/10 Solid dish, nothing really stood out in this dish for me.. it was good but not Amazing

Rigatoni Bolognese - 8.5/10 Sold Good dish, not sure why this is a appy.. but it was really good actually :)

Entree
Artic Char - 5.5/10 Shit hit the fan here.. Artic char itsself tasted good, to bad they slapped the gross sauce all over it (tasted like the sauce you get from oyster motoyaki's but more liquidy) also the risotto cake on top a bed of shredded mash (couldnt tell what it was) had almost zero flavour.. and the candied lemon was very bitter.. (iv never tried candied lemon but I was told its suppose to be soury + sweet)

Chicken & Spinach Ravioli - 8.5/10 great dish.. the sauce was awesome.. only thing i could say is the chicken may have been a bit dry but nothing a whoop load of Delicious sauce couldnt fix

Dessert
Cheese Cake Milanese - 8/10 aka cheesecake wrapped in filo (pastry) was solid

Classic creme brulee - 9/10 perfect classic brulee, they made it well :)

Food - Overall 8/10
Service - 8.5/10 (deducted .5 marks cause the hosted sat us on a table for 4 beside another couple when the restaurant was practically empty!, yes I asked my server to move us after..)
Ambiance - 8.5/10 it was good solid place to have a nice convo, with the dimmed lights made it seem a lot more hmmmm private? XD

Great food, great ambiance.

Coast Overall everything 8.89/10
Service was great, except for the little longer wait we had when asked for the bill but thats our fault because we asked to divide the birthday girls bill between everyone so she didn't have to pay. Our waiter even knew when to take out the cake when we were all finished with our dinner, and he knew how to make it look like a suprise rather then those other waiters/waitresses that simply come out with the cake in hand.
Service 10/10

I had Cauliflower soup, the scallop dish and the desert

For Appys

Cauliflower soup smoked sable fish, brioche croutons, minced egg, chervil salad
9/10 Soup was the best appy, as well as the best dish of the night even over the mains, al1though it tasted good, felt like I could get this soup from a can and add some fish and croutons.

The other appy choice was Smoked salmon carpaccio horseradish aioli, pickled beets, forno roasted tomato, double smoked bacon
8/10 This dish my friends had, was a basic salmon carpaccio nothing special to behonest but was alright, I still recommend the soup if you decide to go to Coast.

For the Main

Wild Haida Gwaii coho salmon crab croquette, salsa verde, carrot pure and fried artichokes
7/10 The first thing that caught my attention for this dish was, the portion size. This fish was huge almost too big for the plate, ok not really but not the size you expect to see. Taste of salmon was tender perfectly cooked salmon. I only got a small piece from my friend so I can't give this dish a very fair rating.

Qualicum Bay Scallops saffron fingering potato, tomato fondue, eggplant ratatouille, in a shelfish broth (dish that I had)
7.5/10 A dish of tomato, eggplant, shelfish broth sitting under 3 seared scallops. The scallops were fairly big for a dish and the texture was pretty good, but the taste was bland, though paired with the tomatoes and eggplant chutney style toppings i gave this dish an 8.

Confit veal breasted herbed potato gnocchi, roasted parsnip, veal jus, braised veal short rib
8.5/10 Saying right now, this was probably the better main that was ordered from my friends. Though a bit fatty on some parts of the veal the sauce on the veal paired great on the veal. What I mean in the consistency of the fat was that, of my friends 4 ordered this 2 had the right amount of fat and 2 the whole thing was almost fat. I found that the potato gnocchi attracted everyone because of the texture it was the star of the dish (its just a ball that has similar texture to rice cake)

There was a last main, thats not featured on the online menu for some reason
it was a Lemon preserved risotto.
6/10 This dish was terrible, stay away. If ordered you get an overdone risotto with a hint of lemon after taste, but sometimes couldn't be tasted because of the overwhelming starch taste of the risotto. It soo happened that 2 of my friends ordered this, in which you receive a bowl of rice that tasted like starchy lemon, thats it. Sorry for all the risotto lovers, this was not liked by anyone.

Desert

Flourless Chocolate Torte, butterscotch gelato with a butterscotch lollipop
8.5/10 This desert dish was neat, nicely plated and the first thing many people picked up was the butterscotch lollipop dipped in chocolate and pop rocks, it was a first never seen before ( in my standards) and the pop rocks got everyone talking. The chocolate torte was a bittersweet piece of cake and when topped of with a refreshing scoop of ice cream was excellent.

Rating for My dishes 8.33/10
Rating for Overall 7.78/10
Rating for Service 10/10
Ill see what picture I can get on here but I hope this review helped. Honestly Coast was not too bad compared to some stories Ive heard, definitely give it a try when you can, I hope though to give Restaurant C a try!

I would disagree somewhat. The restaurants are offering their regular menu as well as Dine Out, and the two places I have gone to with groups of 6+ people, some have ordered off the dine out menu, some off the regular. In both instances everyone was just as happy with either menu.

I went to the Pourhouse for dineout and was quite satisfied, even though I have been there multiple times beforehand with their regular menu.

A good restaurant will be a good restaurant no matter what the occasion is. I should still get top quality food and great service if it is dine out or not. I think that is what separates the good from the mediocre in Vancouver's cut-throat dining scene.

Yaminashi is allllll male.

But yes, water st cafe was a complete bust!! Took 45 mins for our DOV appies to come, off the menu appie of calamari came in what it seemed to be 10 mins since we ordered. Timingg was very off.

I can understand it was busy but how long does it take to make caesar salad and my fanny bay oysters which honestly looked like they were just boiled with the sauce scooped overtop. Although I must say the sauce was pretty yums.

My duck confit was dry as ef and it didn't even taste like duck. Felt like I was eating turkey that was heated up in the microwave. Husband's crab cakes weren't bad but I didn't wanna eat too much of it since it didn't look like there was enough for him.

Dessert was average. My cheesecake was a bit too sweet and his tiramisu was light and fluffy.

Waitress was unattentive and kind of rude, I actually thought the water boys deserves more praise as they were at our table every 5 mins to refill our waters.

I probably won't be going back there anytime soon.

I went to Aqua Riva with my bf. Our reservation was at 6:15 because we booked it like 2 nights in advance. All the window seats were full, atmosphere was good. Our waitress was pretty attentive and had a smile on (which is always good!) I got the scallops, salmon, and banana creme cheesecake. Both my bf and I chose to go with the scallops. They were pretty bland to me, and quite raw on the inside. I love raw scallops, but my bf hates the texture of raw things and he ended up giving his portion to me. The salmon was really good! It came with veggies, rice with bits of bacon, and sauce. The sauce was the best part imo. The dessert was good, but not outstanding. Actually, nothing was really outstanding.

Haven't been excited for dineout for a couple years now because it gets worse and worse every year. I hate how when you start looking at menus it feels like you're eating the exact same thing at every place. Hopefully there's at least one that stands out. Some of the restaurants I see on it in past years is hilarious though like Hons haha

Because the steady decline of Dineout doesn't deserve it's own thread

^^
I haven't taken a look yet but will at a later time.

Now look, as much as I'm bashing Dineout it is still in fact a nice concept. Not everyone has the money to spend normally on some of these places and this does provide a decent opportunity to try a 3 course meal at some decent establishments. However, it's just not really for me anymore as I would still rather go when I want, pick what I truely want to eat, and also feel that the food is made at their highest level instead of some mass production where their banging out the same few dishes all night long.

Dineout is nothing special in terms of price, it works out to free dessert basically.

It's funny how you think dineout will get people to eat at these establishments when they normally don't have the money to spend.

Dineout at a nice place would be $38x2 plus hst and tips, approx $100. Normally it might cost you $120-130. You think someone who doesn't have the means to spend $130 on a dinner has the means to spend $100 on a dinner?

It depends on the place. If you find a decent place that's $28 then it's not too shabby. $38 probably not so much. Your right though if you really break down the cost dollar for dollar it basically works out to be a free desert. But I can tell you for a fact that quite a few people don't think this way because people get suckered in by deals that sound awesome. I've seen tons of people hesitate or never step foot into some of these restaurants yet when Dineout comes out they go crazy.
