I think its a landmark logo for their company. Starbucks has become such a large international franchise that they no longer need to advertise words to signify that it's a cup of coffee by them, they just need the siren from now on. Kind of like the Nike Checkmark or the Coca Cola bottle silhouette.

I was going to say that they're probably hoping that their logo is popular enough that they won't need the name anymore. To be honest, I don't go often enough to immediately know that it would be a Starbucks cup...

the "logo designer" just designs what he's told to design. and jack shit? like ppl up there said, to me as well it looks more environmentally friendly, organic...fair trade. the other is morr traditional big corporate mammoth. brilliant to revamp the corporate image with just a "jack shit" change, no?

i personally prefer starbucks as a giant corporate mammoth tho lol

Designing a logo is far more than "doing jack shit". There's a lot more psychological factors going into the design than you think.

AzNightmare

I like it better, only because I've always thought the logo was way too busy.
If you compare with many other company logos, they're usually quite plain...
Although many logos are just simply their company name written in a stylized way.
Starbucks is big enough so everyone already knows them by logo, without needing the text
in the logo.

I never knew about the new GAP logo change, but really... I could care less.
I googled up on it and I can't believe how many customers are even crying over it.
Saying things like "I'll never shop at GAP again"
Like wtf, either they liked the GAP logo so much that they expected it to be plastered
all over their clothing (hence why a new logo change would mean a different design on the clothing),
or they're just trying too hard to find a reason to cry.

Can you imagine people NOT going to starbucks anymore just because the design on their
disposable cup changed?

I don't mind Tim Horton's coffee, but with their routine price increases I've switched to Starbucks. I prefer the taste of Starbucks coffee and I find the service is much better, so I don't mind paying an extra .25 cents; especially if I'm planning on staying to drink my coffee there.

I doubt Starbucks will be able to decrease the sizes of their cups anytime soon. Especially since they just released a set of ceramic mugs that have the fluid ounce capacity of their sizes on the side of them.

Tall: 12 OUNCES

rebranding is a real touchy thing espeically in a market like north america. alot of people identify with the brand more than the product.

The Gap fiasco was a design atrocity. Switching from serif to sans-serif cheapened the whole thing. The stock font combined with the stupid box makes it look like clip art.

A logo change can be a good thing. Expensive to roll out across a chain, but the amount of PR you can get is high. We're all talking about Starbuck's right now.

A majority of company logotypes/fonts are being phased out to accommodate the digital age. They want their logotypes/fonts on their marketing material to be in sync with the common web font Verdana on their websites so everything remains consistent.

See IKEA's strategy of phasing out their original IKEA Sans/Futura font to Verdana:

http://www.nowpublic.com/style/ikea-font-futura-verdana-what-changed-and-why

Gap's attempt to modernize their logo was a disaster. They should have kept it simple keeping iconic blue box and just switched the serif types to a sans-serif Verdana like font instead of introducing a whole new visual that was too drastic.

I still don't get the whole idea of why people are making such a big deal about
logo changes for well established brands.

There's a huge fanbase, and it's not like people (should) buy stuff just because of a logo.

If you're a new company, then maybe the logo needs to be good to attract people.

I can understand the Tropicana juice box, but that's not a logo anyway.
