Nintendo 3DS vs. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

I know this thread is probably at least 2 months early...but i'm anticipating to buy my first handheld game console.
3DS looks like it's going to be super sucessful. Backed by some great titles and a mod community and it's guaranteed to sell like hot cakes. I'm just iffy on the MSRP..it will be $300. March 2011 seems to be the release date.
I'm also due for a new phone soon so the upcoming playstation phone also caught my eyes. Right now it's all rumours but looks like it's finally happening. I think the unofficial specs look a little weak but i'm surprised so far it can benchmark at 60fps.
* 4-inch, 854x480 display
* 1GHz Snapdragon, possibly the QSD8255 found on the Desire HD
* Qualcomm Adreno 205 GPU
* 512MB RAM
* 512MB ROM
* 5 megapixel camera with LED flash
* 1,500mAh battery
looks like it will come Q2 2011.
I know they are very different gadgets..but which are you planning to get?

unless you can make phone calls on the 3DS, i would most likely get the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play from the 2..

Unless SE did some serious battery optimization, I find it hard to believe it will replace an actual dedicated gaming console. My Desire Z (slightly smaller battery, 800mhz CPU) has very similar hardware specs and if I do any serious gaming on it, I'd have to plug my phone to charge after a couple of hours. Using my DZ as a phone, I get about 12hrs battery life, so any gaming will just cut into that.
So to answer the question, I'd go with an actual gaming console, 3DS. I'm already struggling to get my phone to last my typical 14hr day without any gaming on it.

i also want teh 3DS as my first handheld console but rumors say it will be around $300. kinda expensive imo. We just gotta wait a few months to see the actual price.
for sure 3DS. Especially if I end up working at Nintendo :D
3DS looks fricken awesome!!!!!!
You don't need glasses to see the 3D and saw some game demos like zelda orcarina of time it looks pretty amazing...
Altho, about the battery issue, 3DS has a battery life of only 3~8 hours, compared to the DSlite's 15~18 hours so I doubt that it'll be much better than the sony phone.

^ the catch is that you need to be able to use the phone as a phone after you're done gaming. But on the flip side, if you can charge it using a miniusb connection (which pretty much everyone has for a PS3 or phone nowadays) you can charge it anywhere quite easily. Wake up, unplug it, use it, if the battery gets low, plug it into your computer while you're at work, get home you can plug it into your computer or PS3, go to your friends house they should have one of those cables somewhere. So keeping it charged shouldn't be an issue unless you're ALWAYS on the move.
Personally I would pick up the phone, I'm pretty casual with my handheld gaming and the main reason I don't use my PSP more is because it takes up too much room in my pocket when combined with my phone. I don't really see the point of 3D on something as small as a gameboy but I haven't seen it IRL yet so who knows. That and I've never liked using a DS as I can see the pixels a bit and it gives me a headache (not sure how the screen size and resolution compare with this 3DS though).

here's to hoping they'll put in a dual-core processor in the xperia play
100% getting both.
PSP phone cause although gaming on a touch screen is nice, I still prefer a D pad and shoulder buttons for most, if not all, games. Also want to give andriod a spin to see how it stacks up to ios. I Do hope SE slaps on at least 16-32g of memory otherwise a few RPGs/GOW/NFS/NBA games and it would be the same problem like my iPhone. (granted it will not be my music device but still.....)
3DS cause its the first portable "3D" device. Thou it would most likely be played for 1-2 hrs then start to collect dust in my storeroom like my DS, DSi, DSiXL.

if your out most of the time, your not going to have time to enjoy a $300 gaming machine... but if you have a phone that can play better looking games...
if your home most of the time, wouldnt you rather be on the computer/ps3/360??

I almost exclusively play handheld games on the shitter. no pun intended. I clock most of my iphone gaming in on the can, psp gaming was done on the can. I'm sure if I get a 3DS, it would sit next to the bathroom sink.

Until I see the specs of this phone, I seldom believe it will run actual PSP games or anything of the caliber. Hopefully it can because that would really change some of the PSP market around, just slightly.
But hands down competition wise, the 3DS will sell more than a phone

yeah for my purposes it will be very casual...it will probably be like 30 minutes max per sitting..and i won't be playing it at home. I'm assuming the Xperia will all be downloadable games through PSN and probably not physical based like UMDs.

That phone probably has more than double the processing power as my laggy ass psp 3000 or w/e you call it. 512 mb ROM sounds disappointing, but I guess it's expandable, the PSP go has like 16gb which is a lot more like it. I'd say go for the phone still just because that's one less thing you have to carry. I bought a psp on boxing week and a few games and I always left it at home... kinda defeats the purpose but I can never remember, sometimes I leave it at the door or whatnot. I'd probably wait a bit longer for the phone though, see what the critics have to say, and knowing android phones, they'll probably lose a third/half of their value within 2-3 months

Tried that with an old 23in monitor but it feels cramped as hell in your regular sized bathroom. For a modest 32+in screen, you need a bathroom about 400++ sq/ft.
Since most of us do not have bathrooms the size of a small studio apt, we end up gaming on iPhones/psps/iPads when we take a dump.

^ the trick is to have an HDMI splitter. Run the same feed to your main TV and bathroom TV, that way you can keep playing CoD when you have to take a dump (wireless controllers FTW). When you finish, go back to your main TV.

unless you mute your mic during that time, i dont think your teammates will appreaciate hearing you take a dump :)

Nintendo’s CEO is being quoted as saying handhelds with a battery life of under 10 hours are “absolutely meaningless,” after his company just announced the 3DS only has a 3 hour battery life.
Nintendo CEO Iwata was previously quoted rubbishing the PSP for having a short battery life:
“For games, it is absolutely meaningless if your console doesn’t have a battery life of 10-20 hours.”
The 3DS has a battery life of “3-5 hours” in normal 3DS games, and a 3.5 hour charge time.
He is however true to his word in another 2004 interview:
“I actually don’t think you can’t use the DS for things other than gaming.
However, to make it do all kinds of things, and to give it all kinds of functionality, you end up pushing up the price, making it bigger, and reducing the battery life – this is a mistake, I think.”
Most notably, Nintendo is saying the device’s batteries will only last for 3-5 hours in normal gameplay (5-8 with DS titles), and take 3.5 hours to recharge. By way of comparison, the PSP is rated at some 4-6 hours.
This, coupled with the various dire warnings about the 3D screen causing blindness and eye cancer in little children, has served to take some of the lustre off the otherwise outstanding hardware on offer.
The 3DS itself is due on the 26th of February, for ¥25,000 – other regions get it slightly later, in March and at about $300.
The (Japanese) release line-up is also attracting opprobrium – only 8 titles are on offer, retailing around the ¥5,000-¥6,000 mark:

u sound like a fanboy.... nintendo will be laughing their asses off to the bank when this thing is officially sold world wide..
8 games on launch date, but you still have the full backward compatibility of all games from the DS....
8 is enough to show the novelty of 3D effect..
the psp was sold for $300 when it came out at launch.. nintendo is also promoting the 3ds as an entertainment portable media that can play movies, much like what sony did...
i probably wouldnt get one until the end of the year, my ds is just enough to keep me entertained for awhile..

3DS and PSP2 which is going to be announced soon. will pass the PSP phone myself.

Humm looks like there is enough space to squeeze in 2x 32g Sd micro cards. Would be interesting if someone made a 2 into 1 adaptor like the 2sd->1ms pro duo card.
