: How much and who to go for for mounting tv?

$_$
01-09-2011, 04:09 AM
So I recently bought a new TV from BB and bought a full motion mount seperately. Should I/would BB mount it and how much would it cost? Or can somebody recommend someone who does this semi-professionally that can help out?

Thanks in advance.

Easy to DIY

You just need to keep in mind how big or heavy your tv is and what kind of studs (wood or steel) are you screwing into. A very easy way to do it is to get a piece of wood or plywood and screw it into the studs, then you have a good piece of backing to support your TV and it is totally reversible when you want to take it out. (Just unscrew and mud in the holes for undo)

My dad did it by himself pretty fast I agree with DIY, if you have a buddy who's average-decent with tools and a case of beers that's another option. Don't find professionals just because it wouldn't be worthwhile to make a house call over something that small, it'll be quite the rip

^best way to mount a flat screen to steel studs is a piece of plywood spanning two studs, and secured with 6- 8 toggle bolts. Different toggle bolts have different weight ratings, so make sure you get mores that are strong enough to hold the weight, Hilti are the best.

If you can't DIY it, there are many private companies that will do it for less money and do a better job than best buy.

Your best solution to mounting a tv:
1. Get stupid high
2. Go to home depot and ask them what tools you need to install a tv mount onto a wall
3. Buy that shit
4. Call up a buddy and ask for help installing tv
5. Get fcukin ripped w/ said buddy
6. Do your best to install wall mount and tv
7. Play some modern warfare 2

Most ppl should already have those the basic tools needed. If you don't, you can buy them and use them for future projects, or you can borrow from a friends.

anyways.

Just follow the instructions that came with the TV wall mount. It's not rocket science.

of ya.. and if you get stuck, go smoke a joint and then continue.

I was just about to suggest a Youtube search for DIY videos.

Also a stud finder is a key tool to have.
Also only use the drill to drill holes and not to screw in any bolts to your tv.
Some of the newer brackets have built in levels attached.
Think of it this way you could pay someone to install at a high price.
Or if you have to go out and buy tools and install yourself. The price could work out to be the same but in the end if you DIY you have new tools to keep.

When mounting a wall mount make sure you find the studs so you will have more support. It's really simple actually but if your asking these questions take video while installing it cause we want to see the vid if some carnage happens.

retardedly easy

I just mounted 2 tv's one in my own house and one in a family member's. All you need is a drill (rent from home depot or A&B tool rentals, they're cheaper than home depot usually) and a level (buy a big one from a dollar store) and a measuring tape (if you don't have one, you're not a man. Go to ikea and steal a free measuring tape). A set of screwdrivers everyone should have, but if you don't buy one @ home depot/anywhere (safeway even carries them). And obviously a stud finder, but homedepot/A&B tool rentals also rents them out.

It's not that hard, just stay sober and keep a level head and, unless your seriously handicapped, it'll be easy. I mounted both tv's by myself .. it was a bitch, with a person was helping me would've been much easier.

If you don't have any of the tools, call someone to do it for you. If you are only missing the drill and studfinder ... it'll be like $30 to rent both for a day. You'll save money and have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.

Least expensive place to buy screw drivers is Canadian Tire, if you only need it occasionally then a multi-bit one will be fine.
You can buy a good tape measure for $5 at any hardware store, why would you steal a junk one from Ikea?
A stud finder isn't absolutely necessary, if you have a good ear just knock on the wall till the sound is solid instead of hollow.
A dollar store level is about as accurate as eyeballing it.

^You don't need a stud finder, just knock on the drywall. It takes a bit of practice but you will eventually pick up the skill.

EDIT: You beat me to it.

^Canadian tire is a bit pricy, try one of those smaller tools only stores like Summit tools, etc.

Or to avoid all of that you could just look for wall sockets. Wall sockets always have a stud directly beside them, just knock to hear where it is, then draw a line up and you can use that stud.

Studfinders just make it way easier.

I always buy the tools I need professionally from KMS or companies that cater specifically to my trade. I always buy the tools I DIY with at Canadian Tire, the secret is watching for them to put it on sale for 70% off, which is basically once a month for anything mastercraft.

for someone who doesn't know what they are doing do you think the knock on the wall method is a smart move? Not a chance.

It's not rocket science to listen for the change in sound. If you can't manage to do that then you'll have trouble later on, because thats easier than mounting the brackets, especially if there are steel studs.

Mounting a TV is not hard it's the cables that cause the problems.

01-09-2011, 01:56 PM
hey im not sure if anyone mention that YET but to make the TV look nice and clean with cables tucked in behind the wall you need a FISH-HOOK. You can get them at Home Depot, Rona. Basic concept is to pull the cables from top to bottom using fish-hook: you need to drill hole behind tv and get a plastic cap from Home Depot. Next you drill another hole under your CM. Make sure you get good quality long enough cables-- I suggest 2Meter cables.
Ive installed 2 TVs at parents, 1 at my place and 3 at my families: they think im a pro at it haha
Its really easy as long as you get the idea of what you have to install in proper order. Just follow good YOUTUBE videos. Remember, it takes time to make it look straight and centered so dont rush with anything.
Finally, You need second person to help you with TV, otherwise Ill be seeing you at the hospital for hernia treatement ;)

good luck

Oh and buddy has stud finder, but I don't have any equipment such as the drill bits and stuff. I could prob borrow from a friend or rent one for this project like the others said!

And yah, the biggest reason that I don't want to just "try" to do this by myself off the instructions manual is I don't want the TV to just fall because of a bad job done by me with me pretty much beneath it.

Good for you helping out a fellow member, serious props to you man, but you don't need a stud finder.

Common sense, if you feel no resistance when you install your toggle bolts or screws then your not in a stud. You should feel a reasonable amount of resistance the entire way through without a lapse. If you feel no resistance your in drywall, a lot of resistance your on a protector plate in front of plumbing, consistent resistance and you in the stud.

If you have a stud finder great, it'll make it slightly easier to locate the stud but they're far from fool proof and not necessary.

mounted a flat screen 46"
what you need is
1,2 people
2, a drill with a couple small bits, a level, measure tape, sockets

First, decide where you want to mount the TV, esp the height, get the approx height u want then draw a perfectly level line and that line..should be the bottom or top of the the bracket..so draw this line carefully (now u have the vertical alignment determined)

Second, you have to find the stud or some sort of solid support behind the wall, usually we use a stud finder...if u dont, no big deal, try tapping the wall and feel the stud, then in areas where u think there is a stud, use the drill and put a screw in there, u will know the difference between drilling into drywall and stud by the time u do this (REMEMBER, do this in areas where the bracket will cover); usually styds are 16 inches off centre, so once u find a stud, measure 16 inches to its left or right for the next anchor point (now u have the horizontal alignment determined)

3rd, establish the holes where u want the bolts go into the bracket into the wall, then use the drill bits and drill small holes into the studs before screwing in the huge bolts that come with the bracket, but before getting all the bolts in, i usually do 2 bolts and see if the thing is leveled, make adjustments if necessary

4th, once the bracket is in, make sure it is leveled, or other wise u wont get laid instead..fixing the bracket, also, I would put extra screws in to make sure the mount is dead solid

5th, get the TV up there and get laid..

Honestly just watch those youtube videos and its that simple. Drill pilot hole in studs x 4. Screw in panel.. Screw 2nd piece of panel to tv and mount... Done... Worst case it will take you 30Mins.. But honestly its a 15 min job. Don't scare yourself in saying you cant do it.. Cause its that damn simple just like doing your own oil change. Plus at the end you can be happy with what you have accomplished. You just need the right tools and your set...

if it isn't too high, don't bother. filling in the holes is a pain in the ass. i mounted my monitor a little too high when i did it, redrilling everything, covering all the old holes (there were quite a few) and then putting the monitor back on wasn't worth it at all for those few cm's

if it's a huge difference though, then go for it. it's just a hassle, but since you know how now, it shouldn't be too bad
