sadly the roc on kingsway and clark is closing this week so we need to find a new cheap dim sum place (for the first time in 3-4 years) for saturdays with family

what's your cheap dim sum joint?

Dai Tung gets my vote too. For about thirty dollars, my buddy and I had a big dim sum lunch. The shrimp dumplings taste good.

south ocean seafood restaurant
150-4751 Garden City Road
Richmond, BC V6X 3M7
(604) 278-1233
$2 a dim sum on weekdays & $2.50 weekends (i think)

good thing about them is they push a cart & u order from the cart so u don't need a menu if u can't read chinese (like me) & they have pretty decent food with lots of variety cuz theres not a lot of places that can make or product the food they can

i wrote that in another thread awhile ago last year, few guys on had good reviews as well & my family loves it there

Wow, didn't know they were closing. Used to get take-out dim sum from there once in awhile since I live half a block away... usually a couple bowls of congee... but since HST came in, the size of the congee bowl got cut in half, so it totally wasn't worth it anymore... so we stopped doing take-out after that.

There's another dim sum place literally right across the street... haven't been there in awhile though, but last I remember, they were cheap as well.

there's a dim sum restaurant at lansdowne and its 30% off if you pay before 11am. other places only 10-20% off before 11am.

Cheap Price
Clean Restaurant
Good Food

Pick 2.

My pick is HKYK. Pretty reasonable prices. Or the place right beside Yaohan.

Haha my family used to go to this place all the time when I was a kid. :D

The prices are cheap but the dim sum is very mediocre as well. Prince (on 12th and Renfrew) and Happy Valley (Broadway and Rupert) are much much better (and only a tad more expensive).

no evening patrons, too much competition for dinner crowd and no one would come if they bumped up their dim sum prices

You have to be kidding me.

This place might be cheap (I didn't pay for the bill so I don't really know), but if you don't like being in a shitty environment with people who don't know how to enjoy food or have any sort of manners, I suggest you avoid this steam pile of horse-shit restaurant.

Big Six alert + shitty food + abysmal service + giant portions of shitty food.

Edit:

Also do not go to a place on Kingsway called "East River Seafood Chinese Restaurant". That place eats donkey dick, too.

Alpha is not happy the waitress doesn't fill their tea with water. for $30 bucks tips in, you can feed 4 people really full, I'll go pour my own water. There is so many people packed there at noon for dim sum, sometimes you just have to serve yourself.

One of my new favorite places in Van and a bonus that it's like 2 mins away. Options are pretty limited in that area in terms of goodness. Favorite place has still gotta be Jade in Richmond though.

$2 dimsum ftw

haha, my folks also go here a lot. Food is alright but they're another one of those places that make you share tables with strangers.

I haven't been there in a while but didn't they have $1 chicken and rice at one time? I know they have the roasted pork and rice as well (but I'm guessing that was $2)

Last time I was at Dai Tung (which was over a year ago) two employees got into a heated shouting match - one female and one guy. The restaurant was dead silent for a good 2 minutes after that. Dai Tung (is/used to be) famous for their salted chicken dish. Not sure if it still is today or not.

places that push carts are kind of chaotic and since you dont really have servers, all you have is cart pushers to ask for stuff who dont really give a shit.
i was at po king a few weeks ago and thought their service was pretty shit. and the tables are just too close together.

Any cheap place is going to cram people in. They're trying to earn their money through volume so they're going to try crank through as many people as possible and skimp on service. I'd venture to guess that the client base there don't really care that they get shitty service as long as the prices are cheap.
