I did the enumerator position last Census, I believe it was 2006. Back then, it was by piece work. $1.56 per incomplete census, and $3.xx per complete census. If you can do it fast (walk fast, talk fast, fill the form fast), then you can easily get $30-40 per hour. What I like about the job is that it's pretty straight forward. You have a list of addresses to go to, and you have to visit that house every day until they answer the door. You also have to spam them with phone calls too. When they answer, just ask them the survey questions. At the end of the day, just drop off the surveys at your supervisor's house.

What I didn't like is that you are often assigned an area not close to your house. I live in the south vancouver area. I was assigned Kingsway and 12 or so. Also, there were lots of apartments in that area where the main door is locked. That was hard to get in. Also, there was definitely some risk involved. I had to go into people's houses (or at their door). Some people look very sketchy.

They mentioned "plus authorized expenses", and you said you would need to keep showing up at their house every day until they answer the door. So that does that mean gas expenses will be reimburse?

I had no experience. You don't need any experience for this. Seriously it's just visiting a list of addresses, ring door bell, ask them questions, write on scantron.

They mentioned "plus authorized expenses", and you said you would need to keep showing up at their house every day until they answer the door. So that does that mean gas expenses will be reimburse?

Yes you do get gas reimbursed if they assign you to a far place. I did. It was by km, so you will get 100% compensated for the gas.

Yes. Minimum 3 calls and door bells, spread out over 1 week. After that, they are labeled as no answer and treated as completed.

Would that be classify as completed? or incompleted? I noticed your previous post mentioned:

A household is considered completed if:
a.) You called them 3 times and visited them 3 times, or
b.) You got a hold of them and completed the survey.

It looks like the new pay structure is by hour, not by piecework anymore. They probably realized the hard working ones are getting too much money from the job.

Something like that.

Turned down for a supervisory position because of my age when they told me it's because of my test score. It is highly improbable that my test score was less that 90-95% because the test was retardedly easy.

My suspicions were confirmed when my sister was recommended for both positions despite the fact that I know she either scored equally or lower than me because I know she just isn't that bright w/ the tested material.

Half true. My supervisor was an undergrad in UBC, so around 19-22 years old. The other enumerators are 70% between 19-22, and then the rest were either chinese c-lais or old white men.

yeah but imagine bossing around old people. that'd be so painful. i mean it'd make sense to have the brighter people lead but you dont understand how choked old people get when a little guy shows them up.

I think some adults will admire how a young individual is doing the job because it shows that not all young adults are useless. i applied actually a couple days after seeing this thread, which was around jan.15. I went in for the testing today, and it was pretty simple. Just 15- 19 multiple choice questions depending on what position u want. After writing the test they reviewed my test and handed me a paper stating that they would call me in for an interview. so ill have to wait and c what happens

Pretty sure it depends on how old you are. If you're an old guy working there I doubt you would being admiring a young person being your supervisor.

I have been working since I was 15 and I've never met an old person who thinks like that. They either resent their younger superior or get depressed about their progress in life. Maybe when you get older you'll understand.

the test was brutally easy, which makes it convenient to feel over-confident about it and fly through it too quickly. i did the test in 15 minutes confidently, feeling as if I got 100%. ran through the questions a second time and I caught 4 questions (20%) that were wrong.

perhaps you really failed the test, these guys having nothing to lose or gain by lying to you. whats stopping them from saying "there was candidate who scored lower but fit our criteria better"? nothing. you got too confident and failed the test

I wrote the test about 3-4 weeks ago, and when i finished the test they handed me sheet that had a checkbox ticked off saying "will call for interview", so i assumed i would be called in for a second interview however i still havent. The sheet also had a checkbox for "scheduled for interview" and than went on to list the time and date. So my assumption is if they told you the time and date for ur second interview on the testing day, you have a shot otherwise your out of luck like me.

Told her I already took the test, she apologizes for her mistake, I get a call again from them on Friday asking to go for testing and they apologized again.

Same here,

How long does it usually take after writing the test that one gets called for an interview?

so i did my test 2 weeks ago and i still havent heard back. Im assuming my passed my test cause it was ridiculously easy. I signed the check out sheet.

My question is: Was there any other forms to sign after the test? I had to leave early cause i had prior commitments. The chinese lady going through instructions said the whole process (test and whatever else was needed) would take about 2 hours. The test itself is 30 mins.

Im asking this because she wasnt really clear, and i had to leave early. If i had additional forms to sign i don't want it to be the reason why im not getting a call back for an interview and will contact them...

thanks

I'm located in Calgary AB, and I got called today to go in for the test. Just a question for everyone here, for those who have worked for Census Canada before, what exactly does a Enumerator do? I know there's a brief outline of what the tasks required of you are, but I was just curious from first hand experience. Thanks in advance!

noTirl
04-06-2011, 04:37 PM

Speaking of my past Census experience, there were lots of interesting stories. From horny mature women to obvious drug dealing gangsters to super smelly people and even overly friendly people who offered me dinner. Also, this job showed me how run down some houses can be. You'll be surprised that a lot of house interiors are virtually the same as a dumpster.

friend took the supervisor interview, she said they make you point at a map of the lower mainland and explain about different areas, ethnic areas, safety concerns. also, point out all the construction zones in the area. when you point out a construction zone, state that its important to know because enumerators should take caution around construction zones as it is dangerous, also its handy to consider these zones when planning out routes.

another thing she told me was you'll be a putting a lot of boxes with files in your house. your house will be used as a mini-warehouse for a shit ton of survey forms. but you'll get compensated $2/day for that reason

Good rule to go by, but from what I gather (from various ppl who have asked the recruiter), they said to dress casual.

I dressed up but I don't think it makes a difference in this case.

k2_alpha

^unless you have explicit instructions directly from the recruiter to dress casual, you should always dress to impress.

In today's economy, there is a lot of over qualified people looking for sub par jobs.
There is always someone who is more skilled, more experienced, better qualified than you.
When you first approach the interviewer, your clothing is part of first impressions. First impressions mean a lot in interviews. Don't let anyone tell you different.

A bunch of C-lai's and some foreign people were at the test which made me really want to  hard and they couldn't seem to keep up with the instructions. We were instructed to bring our references and 2 guys in front of me that I can see clearly, one guy used a small piece of scrap paper - Asian male in his 20's and looked like he came from China, and some other guy used the scrap paper for the test to write his. I have my test tmr. I'm quite nervous. Were you interviewed on the same day as well? Or were you there for just the test? I was told that I should be prepared to stay for two hours. That seems like a lot of time, if it's just for the test.

BaoTurbo
05-05-2011, 10:35 PM
^1 hour tops. Half hour for instructions and paperwork like forms and such then another half for the test. We probably took longer than normally with the people that couldn't get the instructions right.

Questions are not really difficult, they are mostly questions that give you lets say, a legend with symbols, then you need to decipher then comparing them to information they give you. Not that hard really, just need to think outside the box and know how to understand the question as fast as possible.

No interview because they will be marking it, then doing a phone interview 2 weeks later if you passed and chosen. So just the test. And side note, I guess at least dress "business casual" even though its just a test. Honestly I think it makes a little impression difference when you walk into the office and see other people working there or people around you that will be doing the test. Jeans and a t shirt is alright if you really want to, but when I did the test, it kindof didn't give off a good intelligent impression seeing other people do that. It's always better to overdress than to underdress even if you stand out because in this case, it's positive.

Oh yea...for me I wore the usual dress pants and shirt, formal shoes, a sweater, and a formal looking yet casual jacket. I guess it's not too formal or too casual so it was what I liked best

They hire on a "as-needed" basis that is based on the contingency of prior interviewees...so naturally it is a bit of a laggy process considering the amount of candidates they need to filter through, select, and verify whether or not they are still interested in a job and whether or not they get fired/flake mid-way.

There are a few new things Census Canada is doing this year, so some processes are ad-hoc and need adjustments as things proceed.

Do you know the address of the training location and what time training starts? I was told my training begins on May 30-31, and that an e-mail would be sent with all the information regarding training by the end of today, but I haven't received it, and I think it's too late to call their office. Please help! :)

Bunk. Went through everything, test, interview, reference's got called... and then that was it.

Phoned the interviewer back she said all paperwork has gone to Census office and not sure what happened after that, so she has nothing to do anymore with it. My papers were just tossed around from person to person -_-.

Also, I heard that they hire on a as-needed basis for neighbourhoods, sooo.... yea.

Same here. I was pretty confident that I'd get the job but I guess they thought otherwise, lulz.

they called today to update my reference when i did so a month ago...i asked when i should expect to hear back they said it won't be her personally but sometime in the next two weeks before training starts. I expected better coordination from a government employment...even if it's seasonal.

so i posted this back in early May...my references got called last week and they were caught off-guard because I told them they should expect a call mid April...not two months after.

What a joke..if they had the capacity to hire 35K employees across the country this is beyond disorganized. Even if they tell me to come in for a training I'll laugh and then decline. and they even screwed up my household's questionnaire, ha.

Just go for training. You get paid $14.72/hr for 14 hours. But training doesn't take up the full 14 hours, you get out 3-5 hours early depending on your trainer / Crew Leader. I fell asleep for 35 minutes and no one even care.

Then just quit after that. :fuckyea:

I just remembered about this!

Anyway, a few months ago I took the test, got a phone interview, and was told that I'd get a call back. About a month and a half ago, I received a call from someone from Census and that person said he would call me back in "a week". I can't really remember the details.

Fast-forward to today and I've had no communication with anyone at Census at all.

I started to think maybe the phone call was a scam but I'm pretty sure I didn't give any sensitive info over the call.

LOL~ Had my interview~ She called my references~

Before the interview, I asked how long is this job is for...she told me she's just gathering people for the hiring pool and trying to wrap up the entire census by end of August!!

Waste of summer if the job is for less than a month
