Lightweight 40MPG 6 speed manual 138HP with a 175HP turbo version coming and rumors of the 274HP Sonata engine also going in there. Looks like a real winner to me.

Hyundai's Veloster will get 40 mpg on the highway without the use of hybrid technology
We've talked about Hyundai's Veloster on a few occasions here at DailyTech. These days, many companies are using expensive electric motors and lithium-ion batteries to achieve 40+ mpg in their vehicles. Hyundai, however, is sticking to lightweight platforms and advanced engines to achieve the same feat.
The latest "40 mpg" addition to the family is the 2012 Veloster, which is quite odd being that it has three passenger doors in addition to a traditional rear hatch. The driver's side of the vehicle has a single door, while the passenger's side of the vehicle has a shortened front door and a small rear door to aid in accessing the rear seat.
When it comes to the vehicle specifications, Hyundai has managed to keep curb weight to a minimum at just 2,584 pounds in 6-speed manual form. The six-speed, dual-clutch transmission (DCT) version weighs in at 2,657 pounds. Power comes from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that develops just 138 hp.
Hyundai says that a Veloster equipped with a DCT will get up to 40 mpg on the highway. The company, however, has not disclosed EPA city ratings for either transmission or highway ratings for the Veloster equipped with a 6-speed manual.
The Veloster will come standard with a 7" touch screen with integrated Pandora Radio support. Hyundai's new BlueLink telematics system will also be included as standard equipment.
Now we come to the styling. The Veloster is likely to draw love it/hate it comments from people who lay eyes on it. While its style is certainly distinctive, it's asymmetric design, bulges, and gaping front bumper are sure to find a fair share of critics.
However, there are two things that play into the Veloster favor. First off, Hyundai officials state that the vehicle will start at a relatively affordable $17,000, which is not bad for a sporty vehicle with good EPA numbers. The second "plus" for the Veloster won't come until sometime next year. Edmunds Inside Line reports that the Veloster will get the a turbocharged version of the 1.6-liter engine good for around 175hp -- the Sonata Turbo's 274hp, 2.0T engine is also a distant possibility. That should make for quite a little "pocket rocket", but won’t do Hyundai any favors when it comes to EPA numbers.

considering the sonata turbo get 34 MPG with the 2.0L turbo i would imagine it would get even better mileage in the much lighter Veloster.
I would also think that 1.6L Turbo in a veloster could get 40 MPG and would expect it to have over 200hp considering the 2.0L makes 275

Frack, hyundai's squiggly "H" emblem has more fire than Honda's straight arrow edge H. I hate to say this, but aside from S2K, Type-R, or the NSX, I think I would choose Hyundai over current Honda models.

But that concept isn't too outrageous either so we can expect the production model to look mostly like that.
It might lose the gimmicky bits like the passenger door or the faux diffuser but that should be close to the real thing. And it looks ok. Not as good as a CR-Z but it should perform way better.

Sadly, there's no need for Honda to step up their game. Honda has been living off of their reputation that they built in the 1980s. The Civic still sells like hotcakes and the Accord isn't a sales slouch either. Even if Honda decides to make a somewhat sporty car, they will lose out to luxury brands such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes which have made their cars more "affordable" in the last 10 years with aggressive leasing programs. I see more late model 3-series coupes on the road than RSXs. Heck, I even see more Z4s than S2000s.

^this guy knows.
Civics always have and always will sell. Honda doesn't have to change anything. Why fix something that's not broken?
The competition's just rising, but Honda isn't falling.

The Japanese still make decent cars that are borderline appliances.
It took the Big 3 nearly 40 years to catch up in terms of quality and reliability.
The window line reminds me of the 370z/GT-R.

I still agree with what was said in a recent Motor Trend magazine...
"Honda should just put the Civic Si motor into the CR-Z and call it a day."
Maybe then someone would actually want to buy one.

I imagine that Honda has invested a significant amount of money into Hybrid technology and as a result, they're trying to turn the CR-Z into some kind of halo car (i.e. hybrid technology can be sexy.) But, their marketers haven't realized that most enthusiasts appreciate the many quirks of an internal combustion engine - the different sounds, the tunability, etc.
Another reason for the poor sales is that enthusiasts would rather spend money on used cars (that are inherently simpler and more tunable) and save the rest of their cash for mods.

where does it say it's a concept? The concept pictures look different than this, leading me to believe that this is what we'll get in a few months.
Sure it says 2012 model, but that's how hyundai rolls. My 2010 coupe was bought in february 2009 with a janurary build date, some US owners have an 08 build date for their 2010 coupe.

I think what Honda wanted to prove was that hybrid cars can be sporty and fun to drive...
if they just put K20 or whatever...that would just be another Civic hatch kind of thing.

Honda used to do both: CRX Si and HF, no reason they can't do it with CR-Z if they wanted to. I'd have bought a CR-Z already if it had a backseat ... I'd buy the Veloster if it weren't for that Hyundai badge on it.

test drove the car. Its got all the gadgets such as heated seats, push button start, panaromic moonroof, bluetooth, 7" touchscreen.
Looks awesome on the road as well. Powerwise, not so much. Wait a little longer and hopefully they come out with the turbo version.

To compare a Hyundai Veloster to a Honda CRX is just morally inexcusable.
The CRX had such a major influence on import compact car culture.

lookwise, not bad imo. and like somebody above mentioned, it's all about the gadgets. i test drove one courtesy of my friend who works at hyundai, and for a DD it's pretty cool. standard features like push start, backup cam/sensor, navi, the works. also stated above though, the thing has almost no torque. but it's supposed to be a low fuel consumption vehicle so that probably isn't much of a surprise

I wouldnt say hyundai would be my first choice when purchasing a car but this veloster does seem to turn heads. Spotted a few on the road already and the rear end does look pretty good for a hyundai.... Definitely a design thats rarely seen. Has some good options like bluetooth, moonroof, somewhat sporty look... The rear black diffuser and center exhaust tips are unique.
The 3rd door would come in handy indeed... Hahah anyone old enough to remember when saturn came out with a 3 door coupe but located on drivers rear side years ago?
