VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver Police are have shut down East Hastings and Nanaimo Streets after a teen was struck and killed this morning.

VPD Constable Jana McGuinness says a 17-year old boy was walking along Hastings and across Nanaimo around 8:25 a.m. "A dump truck heading south on Nanaimo, after making a right-turn off of Hastings, struck the young man and killed him instantly in the intersection."

"What we know at this point is that this driver has been fully cooperating, and is completely traumatized by this incident."

The victim has family overseas and they are trying to contact them.

People walking by the very busy intersection say one person was hit and killed at the same site about six months ago. A couple of store owners say they hear screeching tires quite a bit and it is not a safe intersection.

Isn't this the intersection that everyone speeds by because of the slope or something?

Damn that sucks. Probably walking to school in the morning and gets taken out by a truck

Yeah... in a situation like this where you know it's a low speed incident, but yet the victim was killed instantly... it's pretty safe to assume that he got ran over by the wheels, and that definitely won't be pretty.

There's no Slope there at all.

It's just a big, busy intersection.

The article states the truck was traveling east on Hasting and turned right to travel south on Nanaimo. The teen was walking along Hastings. This is a dump truck, so it is unlikely it was cornering very fast, yet certainly cannot stop very fast.

Without knowing which direction the teen was walking, this leaves 2 scenarios:
1. The truck driver did not see the pedestrian before making the turn, then could not stop in time.
2. The truck driver was committed to the turn and the pedestrian started to cross without looking.

Either way, RIP.

You can't travel west on hastings and turn right to travel south on Nanaimo. It's only possible to turn left in order to travel south on Nanaimo. Unless they meant travelling east, then it's possible to turn right onto Nanaimo.

Such a tragic way to die, especially at a young age.

Still totally speculation, but based on the pictures... I'm assuming the umbrella sitting in the middle of the road is his... and maybe he was holding it in a way that was partially obscuring his view... and he was waiting for the dump truck to finish the turn... but after the truck passed by, he didn't realize that it was towing the trailer behind it, and he started walking, and got pulled under the wheels of the trailer.

Hastings there is all downhill from Slocan to Clark Drive.

I was there in the morning and saw everything closed off. There's no slope @ Nanaimo.

If he's running for the bus, he's crossing east towards the bus stop.

Since the truck was carrying the trailer, maybe he got fooled by the initial wide turn.

RIP.

He was my Godmother's nephew, An international student. He was a really good kid, often doing chores around the house before doing homework. Kept a good average in classes, and was in love recently.

It's such a tragedy for this young lad to pass away this early. His family are currently deeply depressed. I really don't know how to help them...

it's all speculation really, my post was no different. no official news for the reason has been published but from what i've heard/read around, most of the speculation was either him running for the bus or listening to his mp3 player. given that it was the trailer of the dump truck that killed him i don't think the truck driver was to blame though. again, speculation

Errr, no. An iPhone did not kill him, a dump truck killed him, as a result of either him, the driver, or him and the driver not paying enough attention.

It is absolutely awful to see somebody so young get killed but it serves as a reminder to people to pay attention to whatever you are doing. It's simple but so many accidents in life just plain old boil down to not paying enough attention to both what you are doing and what is happening around you.

Always hear about people getting killed there... anywhere along Nanaimo.
And I see so many lamp posts with flowers or pictures or something.

Sometimes it makes me paranoid driving there... It's like I have to be even move
cautious than normal, thinking I have a higher chance to hit someone there than elsewhere.

RIP.

that intersection is pretty bad. there are 3 well used bus stations located at that corner (east bound hastings, west bound hastings, and south bound nanaimo). the intersection is well used and always has ppl waiting for the light. i live relatively close to that intersection and frequent the grocery stores around the area and know well how bad checking around the corner is when trying to make a turn. at the corner i believe where the accident happened sits a fairly large building which is built close to the corner of that intersection with no windows so thus for drivers, the line of site to see around the corner is bad. there are always drivers in a rush to make the corner, and pedestrians in a rush to catch the bus or to catch the intersection walking light trying to bend the rules...

RIP to the teen that got him.

definitely a bad intersection. Driving westbound/eastbound on hastings you'll always notice how slow it gets around the Nanaimo st area mostly due to the quick light cycle and the fact that it is a popular place for people to turn left. There are also a ton of pedestrians crossing nanaimo or hastings to get to the bus stops, grocery stores, the royal bank, etc. It's a nightmare trying to turn left or turn right.

"Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to a new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same."
