Hi, I am looking to buy a good fast/stable router for our house. I came across this website that does router comparisons.

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/index.php?option=com_wireless&Itemid=200

Can someone guide/teach me how to read their charts? I am not very technical person so i basically will be choosing from the top (#1 Dlink storage router,#2 asus N13, #3 etc...)

Please recommand me a router, We have 4 computers in the house, one will be hooked up to the LAN port, the rest will be wireless. Need a router that will be provide good connection ( streaming videos, gaming simualtaneously). And NO, I dont want a dual band router)

We just got the Linksys E3000 and are very happy with it. Wireless N, great range, never lost a signal, no interference from other networks (We live in a condo with 15+ other networks around us), and was easy to set up and secure.

As for their charts... higher score is better in how they rate the router. I'd just research a handful of routers and go with the one that fits your price range and needs.

I use the Asus RT-N16 with a custom firmware called Tomato 1.28 beta. I torrent a lot and the router never crashed. I have about 8 wireless devices using the router every night. Pretty rock solid.

The D-Link DIR-655 is also pretty good. From what I've heard, it's somewhat rock solid. You don't need to change the firmware or anything, so this is easier to set up for the less tech savvy people.

I've got the dlink dir655. Great very stable router. Range is not as good but can be fixed with antennas.

Shockingly, I run the PS3 wireless, + 2 laptops and 1 hard wired desk top on a Telus' high speed extreme modem/router with remarkable stability, it's easy to set up and password protected. Currently I'm on here, someone's doing a Civ 5 online game and I'm streaming netflix on the PS3 and no one's having any lag or problems which is better preformance then I've gotten out of other routers in the past.

are there antenna hacks or something? specific to the 655? or generic ones that involve tinfoil etc.?

http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html works REALLY well. I did it and there is a strong boost in reception for the pointed direction.

I've got a Dlink DIR-615. Nothing fancy, does the job. At any given time, there are 3-6 devices on the connection in my house.

Using Netgear WNDR3700, very happy so far.

Hooked up over 15-20 gadgets/game machines/handhelds from all diff wireless types (B,G,N, N5g) no problems at all. Very easy to set up 2.4g/5G and guest networks, just plug in a 2TB drive in a USB enclosure for a file server.

Very stable, very fast, highly recommended.

Edit:

Its on sale at ncix

I have a Netgear WNR3500L.

It's the best bang for your buck for features and performance. You get wireless N and gigabit switch for only $60-$70.

It's faster and more stable than my old WRT54G.

Best thing is that it made to support Tomato and DD-WRT. You don't need to worry about right version of the router.

I've got Dlink-825 B1 with DDWRT running. I love it. I've got anywhere between 3-5 other computers using it, and I'm able to limit bandwidth :D

I am very very confused reading about wireless routers. I dont need anything fancy.

My needs: 1) playing game in basement 2) streaming video (my sister, and mom)

I dont know whats DDWRT or care to learn. All i need is a fast, lag-free wireless connection from my shaw cable box to all 4 computers in my house simultaneously.

I am looking at Buffalo WHR-HP-G300N ,, anyone has any thoughts on that?

I'm looking at a new router now also..
Based on some recommendations, I was looking at the DLink 625 or 655.

I'm going to go with the 655 because the 625 doesn't have gigabit LAN ports.

Bought WNDR37AV today, according to reviews, its better than E3000 and cheaper. We'll see how it goes.

^It's not as outrageous as you may make it sound. The OP is a total noob by his own admission. The guy's not asking about 3rd party firmware, he just wants a router.

Some people know too much about this stuff. Done improperly, giving advice can easily frustrate someone who's not well-versed about the topic.

Personally, I use the DIR-615.

Why not just Shaw's wireless setup and be done with it? Then if you have any problems, you can just call their tech support, instead of having to rely on all the smartasses here.

I have the DIR615 and the signal keeps getting dropped. The distance is about 30 feet and through maybe 2 walls (from downstairs to upstairs).

The weird thing is if I have a torrent going, the signal is pretty steady otherwise it drops every minute or so. If I move right in front of it I have no problems. I've googled it but I don't understand any of that shit.. Anyone have any tips/suggestions?

lucky me, i was just going to make a thread asking this.

looks like my linksys wr54gsomething something (wireless g) router/switch is about toast. the wireless is at best... crap! my secondary throttled network on my old linksys wirelessB router is still going strong!

so im in the market for a new router. not that it should matter, though i had a nightmare finding a decent wireless adapter for win7 64bit that actually works like its advertised to, a router/switch shouldnt have any issues.. i hope.

i have 3 wired systems, and a good 1/2 dozen wireless connections

so from reading everyones review, the dlink router is pretty decent huh?

^ The dlinks are pretty solid. But honestly, unless you have new N devices you wanna hook up, you could get another WRT54G, and be back surfing with no problems.

The D-Link itself is great but the range isn't as good. For my basement suite it's perfect. I hear the Asus RT-N16 is pretty good processing hardware too and you can flash DDRWT on it.

Nothing has changed in the past year or so. Dir-655 is the best router if you want to stick with stock firmware, no hassle and easy to set up. Rt-n16 is the best router if you want to put a custom firmware, play with vpn server, usb nas support, etc. Both are rock solid and offer decent range.

Slap on the antenna from the previous page for an even better reception.

DIR-825 is a great dual-band unit, that's also WRT-able.

DIR-825 is decent, but reading alot of reviews and comparison. I opted for netgear wndr37AV. So far no problems, download speed (speedtest.net) on 5.8ghz band is 14.92mps ( i live in the basement, router is on main floor).

WRT-54GL by Linksys, Paired it with the Tomato firmware. What I like about it is you can control how strong you want your wi-fi signal to be, I dont think you can do that with any other router. Also added a pair of stronger antennas and you got a killer combo for 50bucks.

Soundy

DD-WRT lets you control the signal strength, as well as nearly every other aspect of the signal.

I use dlink dir-655, works fine. I have 2 computers, 2 laptops, 3iphone/ipods, and a ps3 connected to it, never had any problems unless i'm torrenting something like 1080p avatar; that would be a bandwidth problem anyways.

tl;dr dir-655 is a great router, buy it.

As the thread covers though, it really depends on what you want from your router. DIR-655 is a great router, but is missing a lot of advanced features like WDS and VPN support. You can add things like that to a number of routers by flashing DD-WRT or other third-party firmware; however, DIR-655 doesn't support most or any other firmwares.
