What's your cpu first?
Ill assume its not an i7 so you should setup your ram like this
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
Depending on the motherboard (check manual) slot 2 and 4 may be the primary slot. If so, you put the 2gb ram in slots 2 and 4, then the 1gb rams in slot 1 and 3

generally you always color match. So each pair of ram goes in the slots with the same color. (assuming your ram slots are 2 different colors)
Though it doesn't hurt to check the manual for your mobo, in case it says which pair of slots to use for the smaller ram in the event of 2x2 unmatched pairs (like in your case).
unganged mode is better.
Ganged vs Unganged
Dual-channel was originally conceived as a way to maximize memory throughput by combining two 64-bit buses into a single 128-bit bus. This is retrospectively called the "ganged" mode. However, due to lackluster performance gains in consumer applications as discussed above, more modern implementations of dual-channel use the "unganged" mode by default, which maintains two 64-bit memory buses but allows independent access to each channel, in support of multithreading with multi-core processors.

Check your Mobo specs.
But it's usually colour coded.

Windows XP 64? Wtf. IIRC you'll lose dual channel with odd sticks of memory. Dual channel is accessing 2 sticks at once. What's it gonna do with the third stick? I believe it'll run in single channel mode unless each pair has some sort of separate controller.

he has 2x 2gb and 2x 1gb
running it in their respective slots will still keep dual channel enabled

i feel i should add... winxp 64 is absolute garbage.
microsoft never fully supported it (no sp3), plus driver support and application compatibility is terrible.
Time to join the win7 crowd

Agreed. It's not supported. Unless he's got some specific reason.

You know you can change the interface back to classic :) Win7 is just so good. Trust me you'll find more compatibility issues with winxp64.

does it matter if the two pairs have different CL? will it make the system slower?
For example:
2gbx2 @ CL7
1gbx2 @ CL9

you can only run your ram at the speed/timing of the slowest chip.
So you can run at 9-9-9 timings and it'll be slower than running your fast ram at 7-7-7.
trying to run the 9-9-9 stuff at 7-7-7 will likely cause alot of errors/instability.

lol my best advice is to read the manual. I always do when i get confused on what my slots can handle.
yah you have to be careful you don't disable dual channeling..

winxp x64 failed me. BSOD.
fk it. Win7 Ultimate for me now.
and i did read the manual. friggin chingrish failure.
no more OCing for me, I want stable, and reliable.
^What did the BSOD say? Not that it matters but when I had XP x64, I had no big problems with it. It was a little hard to get my camera to connect but I eventually found a modified driver. I have Win 7 now, but at the time my only choice was Vista but we all know how that sucked balls.
