I am looking for a shotgun microphone for my camera. Any recommendation besides the 2 super expensive ones from Canon? Or can i use any directional mic and find a adaptor for it? Please advice.

Kinda curious about getting one too. Is there anything worth considering under $100?

The RODE is probably the best bang for the buck. The stereo version is very nice.

ilvtofu: No.

^ I guess It depends on what you want to shoot. Most of the time people shoot dialogue only. By the way, Nice setup senna! :)

I usually carry a shotgun and a Stereo sound recorder like a zoom H4n with me.

What about off camera ones? as in one with a longer cable that people can carry around.. something that can be transform to a boom...
I saw one on line by audio technica.. not sure if its sound quality is good?

Most shotgun mics are useable with a boom pole. I'm not sure which model Audio Technica that is . It's best if you gave us a price range but assuming you don't want to spend more than 250 on one, you can look at Sony, RODE, or Azden as alternatives.

Sony has the ECGM50 (direct to camera)
RODE has the NTG-1 (XLR) ( I was gonna recommend the videomics but you wanted to use a boom pole)
AZDEN has the SGM-1000 and SGM1x (These ones run on an XLR output, you can buy an adapter for the 3mm jack)

There's not a huge variety of mics out there that connect directly to the 3mm stereo jack of your camera.

The best/most frequent used Video mics for DSLRs are the RODE VIDEOmics. For boom pole operation I prefer an XLR output.

Azden makes a shotgun mike that's under $60.

Guess he's looking for something just a step of an upgrade from the crappy built-in mic. The Azden looks(or should I say, "sounds") like a pretty good contender. :)

I recommend the Rode videomic too. I'm using one and I love it

We can't keep them in stock, so they must be good, I guess. :)

^ It's cheap for the quality of sound it captures. Though the Build quality of the shock mount is a bit iffy. The new version should better tackle that issue plus it gives you an option of adjusting level with +20db or -10db.
