tattoo artist quality

I did a search for Tattoo's but didn't really find what I was looking for.
Basically, I'm getting a simple Text-Based tattoo, not a design. I'm wondering if the quality would be the same across artists since this isn't a huge detailed design. The reason I ask is because I read that some places like the Dutchmen have wait lists that are months long.
My tattoo would be able to be done in 1 hour for sure.
Thoughts?

There's opinions/comments about certain tattoo parlours already from other threads.

And here's a thread with some pictures of work done on RS members.

How much are you looking to spend?

the dutchman himself no longer does the tattoo's himself, his workers do, and they are very skilled from what ive seen!
ive had all mine done from adrenaline from the same guy, i like his work, hes never let me down!
but if its a solid colour tattoo...i dont think it really matters what tattoo artist does it(so long as its sanitary, new needles and such)...its pretty hard to fuck up a tattoo..its like those coloring books - stay inside the lines.

ah! thanks for your replies, $$ isn't really a big thing... though the tattoo is a simple 10 word quote in a simple font... so I wouldn't want to be paying a ridiculous amount. Maybe $200 max.
I'll jump over to those threads thanks again

Hwo big is it? You say "It'll be done in an hour easy", but what we think and what actually happens are not always the same. When I had mine done, my artist thought it'd be about 6 hours. Ended up almost 10.
Also: Don't cheap out on a tattoo. $350 now is cheaper than "Holy shit, man, I can't believe you got that put on your body forever" for the rest of your life.
This was 10 hours in three separate sessions.

well it's 12 words long, I was hoping for it to be about 8" in length and the font should be quite small. Would that take more than one hour? Something simple similar to this but on my back.

My thoughts on the price were based on the $100/hr average that a few tattoo places quoted me. I didn't call Blackwater or Monkey King tattoo yet.

That looks good, how many hours has it taken so far?

I would recommend not going to Monkey King. This has nothing to do with their quality as Jeff the owner is awesome and I love his work. Reason I saw this is first of all he specializes in Japanese Art work and second of all there is a 6 month waiting list right now. I wouldn't say Jeff would do such a better job then somebody else for the type of tattoo you're getting so it won't be worth it to wait so long. At the same time even though your tattoo is simple and easy don't take the mind set of wel since it's easy any artist can do the same job. WRONG! Like people have mentioned don't cheap out on this as you only get one shot at getting it done right. On a side note I've had quite a few tattoos done at Funhouse by Art and Mark and they are both pretty solid. Art will have longer wait times typically while Mark is easier to book. Cheers

I still have one more session to do before my piece is done. He's been great throughout the entire process and him + Jeremy (partner) are super chill to talk to before/during/after.

I got mine done at Adrenaline, simple 3 words about 13cm across and 5cm tall
took 45mins and cost about $150...
he quoted me for about an hour and a half but it only look 45mins
How big did you want your quote to be? If it's just text i say go somewhere like adrenaline cuz there isnt any skill involved in writing script and shading it in, like you there isnt any designs on it
That's what i think..:)

+1 for Blackwater
+1 for Monkey King
+1 for Funhouse
-1 for Adrenaline
12 words shouldn't be less than 90-120 minutes, if done properly.
I got one word on my forearm done by Funhouse for $120, took about an hour, looks perfect.
I got another word done by Adrenaline for $150, took 45 minutes, turned out all blotchy. Had to get it touched up.
If you go to Blackwater or Monkey King with a small simple job, they'll let you get done by one of their apprentices (who also do great work.) The main guys from the shops, Jesse and Jeff, will only do more complex, bigger projects.
Don't skimp on the price.. it's going to be on you forever. And don't forget to tip your artist! ;)

jesse works on his own. there are no apprentices.
he does do smaller pieces, for $80/h. smaller pieces don't have crazy wait lists. he does them if he has time in between his other sessions.
for those of you wondering, he charges $165/h for larger pieces. great work. i have a back piece were working on right now.
^ I have a piece done by his apprentice. Maybe he's moved onto his own thing now.

+1 for Cohen! Very very chill guy. I went to him originally because I only want a some background fill in and dont want to wait more than a week. I'm going to go to Cohen now for all my non specialized tattoos. In fact I'm going get the top of my foot tattoo by him as soon as the weather turn a little warmer.

Don't talk if you don't know lol
Jesse had an apprentice called Jay, due to an arguement, Jay split off and formed his shop called "Trigger Happy". Both their shops are on Renfrew, super close to each other. I know before hand because I have gotten from Jesse personally and I had friends that gotten tattoos by Jay

I'm the guy nicolaspal is talking about. Got my work from Jesse, half sleeve, chest plate and a bit of back piece. Crazy work.. but wouldn't go there again.
1. Very full of himself..
2. Had to "brb" in middle of my session to eat. Comes back all fucking wired eyes huge, pupils dilated to the max and super sweaty. Heard a lot of artists do Ice cause it gives them a super steady hand. THEN AFTER, due to the fact he was "too hungry again" had to stop my appointment. Guy was wired as FUCK. lmfao
3. Overcharges.. i swear he worked super slow and milked me at some parts..
But overall his work's fucking amazing..

Don't talk if I don't know? Look at the date of the post. I was in the present tense. I'm no tattoo historian, but I am familiar with both artists -- I have work from both of them. Sorry to hear that you had a negative experience? Not trying to ride anyones dick but From what I know, I myself hav never had a bad experience with Jesse before and neither has anyone else that I talked to that has had appointments thereafter.
Although I can somewhat know what you are talking about in point 1. Hes pretty strongly opinionated about certain things, but isn't everyone entitled to their own?

Good things come to those who wait. My wife didnt go to her normal artist because of the wait time (said it felt like she was cheating on him lol) just for something quick and, she thought, easy - hard to screw up - just the first initials of my two daughter's names. Long story short she's on the long waiting list to spend more money with her regular artist so he can fix the shitty work this other artist did.
One thing I've never understood is how most people live their whole lives without a tattoo and once they figure out what they want, they have no patience and have to get one right away. That shit is on you for life. Wait.
