Usually I just take my car to the auto shop for oil changes, since the difference DIY vs auto shop is isn't a whole lot for my car (Civic).

I was just wondering where you guys get your oil drain pan from for those that DIY. I want to start DIY and save that extra $5-$10buxs difference I've been paying to my auto shop.

Canadian tire.. Lordco.. One of those aluminum pans that are meant for holding food...

Yeah, you can use a variety of house hold items if you're in a pinch. Otherwise, they're only a couple bucks at virtually any automotive shop (Canadian Tire, Lordco, Wakefield Sperling, etc) or even at Princess Auto.

Well yeah, if I drain it onto an rectangular aluminum pan. The oil will be wobbly on the pan and the pan will be quite heavy. Need crazy still hands to pour it into a funnel back into the empty containers.

walmart sells a decent oil catch pan/container.

the one walmart sells is a large pan that connects to a container. the pan funnels the oils into the container. my brother bought one when he was changing his oils.

wow geez, walmart websites SUCK, cant even find it there, and i cant remember the price. but if you do decide to look for it there, its a yellow pan with a large black container.

Lordco. Hold a lot too. I've don't 3 oil changes on it and I can fit more in it before I gotta go drain it.

But be careful. They will need to be replaced over time, what with the dragging over cement. They're only plastic.

Get one of the ones with the little pouring lip or w/e on it so that its easier to dump back into the oil container. Just put the funnel on the container, and pour the old oil back in.

I bought a plastic one from crappy tire. Forgot how much but it's very convenient, has a separate pouring lip for you to put the used oil to the container and a holder for the oil filter.

Buy a funnel while you're at it. You also need an oil filter wrench.

I like the triangle shaped pan, makes for easy pouring and it has a knob for the filter to drain on. I got it at princess auto for less than 10$

go to the revscene sponsor U-Fix-It-Auto and for $20 you can rent access to a lift for 1hr.

It's fun and you remove the risk of the car falling on you.

for around the same price you can buy a cheap heavy lift and jack stands and work on the car outside. You get to peek under your car and look for leaks.

oil filters are SUPPOSED to be hand tight... can't stress this enough...

^ wrenches are used to take them off, sometimes over time they seize up a bit and just using your hands isn't enough leverage

and why are you stressing this?

the oil filter wrench is used to take off the filter because not all oil filters are "hand tight" as they should be and can be a real bitch to take off.

Don't get this one... I bought one like 10 years ago and it sucks, the little spout doesn't work well, you'll have to pour it out really slowly to not spill and miss the bottle.

To the OP you can use anything, even the dollar store will have suitable things

When you're finished just pour it into used 4L milkjugs and procrastinate till the day you finally take them all to the disposal site :D

personally i'd run to the the U-FIX-IT shop and spend 20 bux to throw your car on a hoist and they supply the drain pan aswell as discard your oil.
a bonus is that you wont have to crawl under your car and fight with it, or drive to cambodian tire to dispose of your oil risking a spill in your car.

Someone on this forum (who shall remain nameless) drained out his transmission oil at my house, only to have it spill all over his car when he got home. :lol :whistle:
