My girlfriend is going to the UK for exchange, and we want to keep in touch using Skype. If she buys skypeout subscription and calls my rogers cell phone, will I get charged long distance or will it just dig into my local minutes?

Also, what are your guys' tips on keeping in touch with loved ones overseas?

Thanks!

Also considering using whatsapp to msg each other.

it'll be local minutes
and no tips, just that it usually all ends up in failure.

make sure you get some provocative pictures of her BEFORE she leaves!

Get her a Magicjack. Easiest shit to setup. She can hook up any phone to it, and you can even get a 604 number, so you can call her, "locally".

If you've both got iPhones, use Viber for free calls using 3G or Wifi, or Beluga for BBM-like texting (or stick to whatsapp)

Other than that, +1 for Magic Jack

Google voice is also another alternative.

Google voice gets recorded last I checked, Skype or Magicjack are probably your best bet. Be careful bringing a phon overseas, my brothers friend got a $19k roaming bill.

Thanks guy! My gf ended up getting a pay as you go plan sim for her unlocked HTC. Her plan is crazy!!

For 15 pounds (roughly 23 CDN dollars), she got 200 minutes, 500 MB data and unlimited texting. Dang....

And we're trying the skype and whatsapp thingy. So far so good.
