| Scam/Fraud - Bank
I recall there was a similar thread on here, but I just couldn't find it.
I got an email from my bank saying my mastercard will be deactivated within 48hours due to several unsuccessful attempts.
It's obviously a scam because I don't have a mastercard, the sender address looks is fishy, and they addressed Dear (name) via my email account address.
But my question now is, how the hell do these dicks that are trying to scam people know my email address that is associated with my bank? I barely use online banking too.

Probably the same way those junk mailers have your email.
Except this time, it was disguised as a bank fraud version so it caught your attention
more than those viagra or penis enlargement ones.
I get these scams from various different banks, so if it just happens to be the same one you use, it's probably just coincidence.

Yah there was a thread about this already.
Happened to me few months ago when "CIBC reps" sent the same email about my CC deactivated.
But I never use online banking... So I wondered how they got my email.
Called up my branch and the assistant told me that ppl might have hacked into their system and got info.
Told me they will get their security system to look into this.
Sounded like to me their system isnt protected enough.
Just ignore the emails and dont open them. Posted via RS Mobile |

Just ignore the emails and dont open them. Posted via RS Mobile | Ya, I doubt their security got hacked. I've gotten CIBC emails as well, but I don't have an account there - so I'm just sure they're sending out random emails, hoping that somebody has an account with CIBC.
Just ignore them. Honestly, if there was a big issue with your card - they'll usually call you.

Spray and pray? If they send an email from ____ bank to every single email in the universe, some of those email's users will probably have an account with ___ bank.
But what do I know, I'm not a scammer. I work for my money.

^ Yup. I mean, they just need to make the same email for however many banks. Spam it out, and get a good number of responses.
Just look at the email address.. its like bank-montreal234923568073.com or something

I have received phishing emails for BMO, RBC and Desjardins and I do not hold a regular chequing account with any of those institutions.
Standard advice: if you're really worried about these things when you get these emails, open a direct connection with the institution's website. Always assume that a banking link in an email is unsafe.

If it is really coming from your bank, they should just be calling you instead of emailing since it is considered "urgent".
