Let me take you back seventeen years – Ace of Base was on the radio, Mrs. Doubtfire was dominating the box office, and The Today Show’s Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel had no freakin’ clue what the internet was. In the following video segment from January 24th 1994, the morning anchors stumble over the identity and jargon of the technology that has come to define the past decade. Gumbel is unclear how you pronounce “@”, Katie Couric suggests “about”, and no one wants to say “dot” when they read “.com”. Confusion with lingo aside, The Today Show cast has to ask a crew member to clarify how the internet works. Do you write to it like mail? Is it just in Universities? Does it require a phone line? …This was less than two decades ago, and it’s a wonderful reminder of how unprepared the mainstream media was for the innovation that was about to sweep the globe. As the crew member says of the internet, “…it’s getting bigger and bigger all the time.” What a delightful understatement.

LOL "does it require a phone line?"
Back in those days, you actually needed a phone line to connect to the internet. It's called dial-up internet.

Internet will be the biggest technological advancement of our generation...if not our lifetime.

I agree, and disagree.
Mainly because of the control the gov't and corporations are trying to put on the net. With user fees for overages, and all this talk about charging for emails and whatnot. They know it's the biggest thing in our lifetime, and their greed is showing.

will be? I think it already is, I just hope I'll be around for when something else comes along and makes the internet obsolete

A network of computer devices.......

Before computers, it was telecommunications devices......

Universities had a limited network in place - research and shit.

The cold war had lot to do with the opening up of the Internet as we know it.

Once business world realized the potential and started using it, it exploded.

Now social networking has continued the growth.........

Coles Notes version.

Internet will not become obsolete. It will evolve. Faster. Devices with better interface. Access everywhere. Direct connection to your person (senses). Emotions, thoughts, etc.

imo the internet is beyond just a network of computer devices at this point

Depends on what you define a computer as, I suppose.

The nodes of the Internet are still computer based, yes?
