parking at UBC for free?

Hey guys, do u guys know where u can park for free on campus where u have a low chance of being ticketed? Parking at ubc is so pricy and taking the bus takes way too long. Do u guys know about their parking rules like how many tickets until they tow your car? Do u guys also by any chance know what time those ticketing officers get off? Cause the parking acess office closes at 4 30 so I'm not sure if they stop ticketing people after 4 30. Any input would be nice guys!! Thanks in advance!!

Thanks for the help but these threads are not very updated, as ubc parking rules have changed. I'm looking for advices that are up to date and is more interested if anyone know where we can park and get away with it without being ticket because I am sure there are some areas on UBC where they dunt patrol as much. Thanks tho!

think hes looking to find parking on ubc campus where he can get away with parking for free, pretty sure he knows that he can park at 4th and bus the way there. By any chance, i would like to know also. I'm sure there must be some hidden places on campus where we can get away with not paying. I've always wondered if the parking control office by the health science closing at 4 30 would mean that there would be no one ticketing after that. Anyone know?

Tickets are given by security and they are 24/7...
As for free parking - Marine Drive near the beach?
Posted via RS Mobile (http://www.revscene.net/forums/announcement.php?a=228)
All along Marine from Totem to Vanier is the only place with free parking AFAIK.
And I think for the smaller lots, the ticketing people stop coming around at ~6:30-ish (don't quote me on that), because I've left my car at the Cheeze parking lot a few times for hours in the evening/late night without being ticketed.

I don't think the parking violation tickets were given by UBC security. UBC has its own "UBCpark" diviision.
I doubt they give out tickets 24/7 .They rarely patrol the lots after 7pm. [If you have night classes, it might help  ]
Depends on what you are coming from, you could park on 41st Ave @ SW marine Drive. That's what I had been doing [not anymore lol]
Tips for the OP: There's something you could do at any ICBC insurance brokers that costs $18. :fullofwin:

won't be so hidden if all RS members start leaving their cars there. Anyways i know there's that new roadway built few month or two..maybe try streetparking if they haven't put up the signs yet (i think it's thunderbird by wesbrook mall)

Parking lots in UBC are enforced by UBC Parking and Access Control Services. Although they claim to enforce parking 24/7, they are basically non-existent between 8pm to 8am (except for midterm and final periods where they will patrol until 10pm-11pm).
If you want to park in campus for free, you can park by SW Marine on the curbside (but they are usually taken after 8:30am). If you go to class in the afternoon, try one of the B Lots and buy a ticket off someone else when they leave.
As for the $18 license plate, it only works if the person doesn't have the flexpass registered. If the car is registered in the flexpass database, the infraction will stay with the person who registers it. Even if the infraction is done before you register to the database, you will be pegged for it when you register your student number and license plate. It will trace back to any unpaid infraction and tag it to your account.

Parking Access Office by Health Parkade closes at 4:30, but that only means you can get your car back until 4:30pm. If they tow it at 5pm, you can get your car the next day (after you paid your fine). UBC uses Busters to tow your car to their impound. They operate 24/7 so don't try your luck.

Before that stupid accountant sue UBC parking services, it used to be 7/8 tickets before your car is getting towed.
However, nowadays, it's about 3 or 4. I just used up my quota :woot2:

its always the same guy ticketing ppl.... in his smart car.. basically he checks every 2-3 hours in each parking lot. If you get lucky and see him coming by.. pay for like 10-15 mins and u should be good for at least 2 hours as they dont check very often. Never park at bookstore and not pay tho its easiest to get caught there. and u can park for free anywhere if its snowing they don't check or cant cause u cant even see the numbers on the ground to pay. And i don't know anymore "secret" free spots that u can get away with 100% of the time anymore. Basically last year I parked for free everyday for the whole term while only getting 2 tickets. few spots are near the apts by buch to give u a hint... dont think u can park there anymore though due to construction..

I always wondered if they still ticket u if its raining really hard (pouring) cause once they ticket is placed even with the envelope, the rain may smudge off. Or becomes pulp. I noticed that the paper is waxy so I'm not sure if it'll become pulpy after the rain.

Get one ticket, keep it in your car, put it on your windshield when you leave.
MOST of the parking enforcers are too lazy to open the envelope to check the ticket, or to radio around to see if someone else ticketed you earlier.
I used this my last year at UBC whenever I was in a pinch and needed to park at a meter or open lot on campus; never got caught :p
But my friend got caught a couple months into it

Maybe u got away cause no one actually patroled when u did it, they would usually take ur ticket from ur wind sheild and give u a new one. Maybe u thought u got away with it but it jus happens that no one checked at the time u did it.

actually, you are being greedy. UBC parking is expensive but it is not overpriced. If it was then the lots would not be capacity almost everyday by noon.
if you're going to drive to school, pay for a damn ticket.
if you can't afford parking or are too cheap, then take the damn bus.
not trying to haterade as I also goto UBC and have gotten my fair share of parking tickets, but just think about it. if there were free parking spots anywhere on campus that would just jam up the streets with more traffic making it worse for everyone. common sense

Just to set some facts straight in case the above posters didn't already.
1. They will now tow as soon as you have 1 existing violation.
2. If you are towed, you pay towing fee, all parking tickets at full price and the storage fee.
3. Using an old parking slip from yesterday will not work. They are instructed to check the slips carefully.
4. Putting old parking ticket envelope on the windshield is useless too, they check.
5. Parking patrol runs until late night, past dinner time. They will still check all the lots - paid ones, employee only and reserved lots.
Like what the people above said, parking is expensive, but not overpriced. Downtown is way more expensive. I pay well over $1000 per year for parking and that's just how it is. UPass - make use of it.

Buy a flexpass if you drive to school everyday. It comes out to roughly $5 a day which is not too bad. Plus you can go in and out of the parkade multiple times a day and can park on weekends to study for finals or club stuff etc.

flexpass = you buy a pass that grants you access to the parkades.

Flex Pass is a UBC parking pass that allows you to access to your specified parkade(s) on a month/term/year basis. Techincally, it is not FREE for Flex Pass users to park in the weekends, because they have already pay it.
Carrying a FlexPass doesn't mean you can park on those B/C-lots, it only allows you to park at the 4 parkades at UBC. You will still get a ticket if you have a flexpass and didn't pay at B/C lots.
Yes, you have to pay off all your exsisting violation payments [of your current plate ] before you can register for flexpass.

Not free but you can try renting out a lot from those private residence around UBC. I rented mine for 40 bucks a month near the village, gated underground and bike 2 minutes to classes. They're not abundant but come up from time to time on craigslist around $30-60
Plus you don't have to worry about random people dinging your car if you ride a nice one.

if you are so poor that u cannot afford to park at ubc then scan one of the b-lot parking tickets, photoshop the date, and reprint it on receipt paper. But since this takes more than 2 brain cells to do, i doubt RS can do it
um, the answer is pretty clear...there is no free parking during the day other than marine drive.

UBC/SFU parking is expensive but not that bad compared to downtown. Try $350 a month parking at Shaw Tower.
If the flex pass is $400+hst+parking tax, it's not TOO bad. SFU Westmall reserved is $530 (include all taxes).

Why don't you compare it to Tokyo then I bet its more expensive there.. point is it's students that are paying for parking at sfu/ubc while more affluent people are paying for parking in DT which is a financial district. Different places different people.

Yea... Professors are not affluent people right? What about other UBC employees?
I don't knoe about UBC, but there's no price discrimination between staff and students. edit: No price difference between SFU staff and students.
My point is, parking is priced accordingly. If everyone is able to afford parking what do you think id going to happen? Flooded lots. Students have a upass for a reason. If you argue that you live too far, then that's too bad. Use the "living in Mission" savings to pay for the parking pass. Or move closer.
If you can afford the car, you also have to be responsible for related costs associated with owning a car.

Not sure but I heard teachers or employees of UBC get their parking passes for $80 /semester. Which is way cheaper than students. I remember the b-lots used to be $5 then it raised to $5.50 and now $6.

B-lot is the outdoor one near Starbucks right? When I started post-secondary in 2004, I think it was only $4.
Raises every year is due to our crazy parking tax of 21%. It still doesn't make sense to me that we have to pay HST on parking tax.
As for UBC employees, I wouldn't know because I am not a student and don't work at UBC. I only have information about SFU.

Parking at b-lots is cheap but sucks if u hv class at like buchanan or the anthro-sociolgy building. Parking on north west marine is all taken up so quick. Long walk (15 mins) if u park at b-lots by forestry building walking to buchanan.

Exactly, you get the point now right? (or I guess, Gee.Tee.Ar) If all UBC parking is affordable (or free), that means either:
1. Build more UBC parking lots and have less space for classroom and lab buildings
2. People who are willing to pay will have to fight or camp for parking stalls
3. Traffic is going to be more of a nightmare
Side note:
4. This also go against the environmental policies that people are trying to advocate
5. The UPass system might collapse due to less ridership
Parking rates are only going to go up. As for the free parking argument, it's your choice to pay or not depending on your risk aversion. Personally, I pay about 75% of the time when I study at UBC.

Sep 2007 = $4.50.
And then they raised it up to $5.00 in May 2008.
Then $5.50? in May 2009.
$6 by May 2010.
You can see the trend here. [$6.50 is more likely by this summer, I guess ]

When I don't pay it's usually around 8pm at the metered lot in front of the "x-men" building near Irving. Sometimes I feel like getting some studying done at UBC because it's closer to my house.

I had 10 tickets before my car was towed, the total bill came up to 4 bills ($30/ tix + towing fees, they didn't charge me 60 for each tix even though its suppose to be an addition 30 bucks or so after like 2 weeks or something).
As for the guy ticketing, ticketing goes on all the way til around 9 pm, i was ticketed once at around 9 20 pm on a weekday.
There are still some tricks to get free parking around ubc:
1) gift credit cards from 7 11 works time to time (NOT EVERYTIME) at the parkades. The one that worked the most often is North parkade. My gift card doesnt have cash and it still works (Last yr gift cards from Richmond center and Oakridge worked, not sure anymore cuz i threw them away during the summer)
2) the apartment parking lot by west parkade is free after around 2 pm, cuz thats when the guy checks, he doesnt check after that
3) village parking lot is free after 1-2pm same reason as above. they ticketing guy only check these parking lots twice
4) L parking lot by west parkade is a safe bet to park for a few hours (i made my self one of those L passes with a fuking black marker and white business card and i didn't get caught for one whole semester)
BTW, you dont have to pay the tickets issued by UBC UNLESS you registered a flexpass under your name. In that case, if you get a ticket, you have to pay or they will not let you graduate since the car is registered under your name as a student. If you do not have a flexpass, then dont have to pay since ubc parking service is independent and they dont bother taking you to court
Hope this helped

Aren't u afraid they can track u down for using those giftcards from Rc and oakridge? Cause the parking lot (north etc) have cameras. U still have to pay ubc even if u dunt have a flex pass because u get towed on ur 3rd ticket. This is why u had to pay $400 in the end.
If it was close to ur last year then u wudnt have to pay but if u continue to park at ubc ilegally, u shud pay the ticket .so a blank giftcard works for the parking lots when u leave? Have u tried using it at the B-lots where it is $6 for a whole day? Same machine I'm guessing.

Just wondering where the best spots along/around 4th that you can park for free all day. I'm taking night courses at UBC and work DT during the day. I want to just park my car somewhere near 4th in the morning so I can bus to work from there, then bus to UBC for my class and pick up my car in the late evening. I would basically be parking there from around 7:15am-10pm... LOL I'm sure residents wouldn't be too thrilled to see my car all day in front of their house... If not where would be the best place to park around/along 4th after 5pm?
Thanks!
P.S during my undergrad I use to just buy the bronze package at thunderbird. It was pretty convenient but still a bit pricey. I had a buddy that parked at the Forientek parking lot and only got ticketed once in 2 years...

Forgot about this thread...but there was one day this sem when I was driving to school and I saw some cops + tow trucks on marine towing cars that were parked illegally just after the 2 lanes merge (past where the free parking ends but also where the little barrier is across the street).
Lots of people have been parking like that over the years....this is the first time I've seen/heard of anyone being towed though.

Some secrets are better kept secret. Not trying to be a dick but if everyone starts parking here I'm sure the parking Nazis would be all over my place in no time due to the complaints from residents. Thats how UBC caught onto the giftcard trick because everyone started doing it. I ended up getting a parking pass because my landlord didn't need hers anymore so I just took it for the sake of it.

if you use it at the parking lots, dunt they have cameras that record your plate? that means even if you get away with it, they'll have you on record. BTW you mean Gc as in ones with no value or value? would they still work at the b-lot parking lots where its like $6/ day? Those machines seem to be easier to get away with.

Not sure exactly how it worked as I never used that trick myself but my buddies all parked at West and Rose parade back then and a lot of them used that trick with a $0 GC and got away with it for a good length of time. I know they don't work at the big parades anymore since thats what I was told and I doubt they'll even work at any of the smaller lots. UBC probably fixed it for all the lots I would assume.

Not that I know of, although I might be wrong but if your plate isn't registered in the UBC system through parking passes they don't have your personal information and they usually don't chase you down. The only way they chase people down is if you owe them money from previous tickets and it so happens that they are checking plates at the lot you're parked at, in which case you're fucked. I don't think the machines were changed but more of technical adjustments for what kind of cards each machine accepts. I knew because my friends all ended up paying for parking eventually lol.

Since we're talking about the cameras at the parkade; I saw this grey pickup truck last Saturday parked in front of one of the North parkade's exit lanes and the top of the truck had these 2 boxes with what seemed like cameras, anybody seen this truck before as well?
Maybe the truck was just parked there? I dunt think they would use the truck as a camera lol.

I mean, don't ubc call the cops if they have u on camera that u were using a card that was "fraud" cause it is illegal to do that. Cops can track down where u live even if you are not registered with ubc parking. Your plate is recorded on camera lol. I would only do this at the outdoor b-lots where there are no cameras if it still works now.

No idea, no one I know or heard of has ran into that issue.

They stop checking the bookstore after 9-10pm. Also, even if you get a ticket, just don't come back, its only UBC transit security :P

Got ticketed today at Totem parking. If my car isn't registered to my student number, do i have to pay ? And what's their policy on towing ? I drive once or twice a week and just use pay parking, they wont tow right unless I get another ticket or something ?

Got a ticket last week that's in the dispute process. The lot beside Allard Hall sort of in between one of the Buchs (:troll:) and Buch Tower put in new "authorized UBC service vehicles only" signs that are barely visible cause all the fucking service vans are blocking the signs, no indications on the ground. Was not there the last time I parked there, fucking scumbags.
Also why are all the parkades now metered? Pretty annoying.

I don't get that either. Has someone actually seen a patrol officer go around and check?
