Mexico's ambassador in London has written a furious letter to BBC bosses to complain about "offensive and xenophobic" comments made by presenters of the popular TV motoring show Top Gear.

Why would you want a Mexican car? Because cars reflect national characteristics don't they?," said (Richard) Hammond as they discussed the Mexican sports car, the Mastretta.

"Mexican cars are just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against a fence asleep looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat."

"That's why we won't get any complaints about this because at the Mexican embassy the ambassador's going to be sitting there with a remote control like this," said Clarkson, pretending to slump in a chair, snoring.

However, the ambassador did complain, demanding the BBC order the presenters to make a public apology.

"The presenters of the programme resorted to outrageous, vulgar and inexcusable insults to stir bigoted feelings against the Mexican people, their culture as well as their official representative in the united Kingdom," he wrote.

"These offensive, xenophobic and humiliating remarks serve only to reinforce negative stereotypes and perpetuate prejudice against Mexico and its people."

For all the jokes they make about the Germans being Nazis its surprising that they haven't complained. I've seen every ep of Top Gear and this is the only time I remember them even talking about Mexico.

He does go overboard but the entire show has been airing some questionable stuff lately that has pissed off viewers.

For example, the TG Christmas special was blasted when they showed baby Stig in place of baby Jesus. Seems like TG wants to push the envelope a bit and not be so politically correct but my question is where do you draw the line? It's a motoring show that airs all around the world so is there really a need to make fun of other cultures and countries? I guess this is debatable.

One of the partners at the office also watches top gear. Interesting thing he mentioned is that Top Gear was talking about going off air and not continuing a year or so ago. I don't know if this was a rumor or not but I'm sure many of you remember that. The truth is, the show can't go on forever and they will likely have to pick a time at which to end the program just like all great shows.

Rather than end the show, perhaps the show will be ended for them. It's a long shot I know but I thought it was an interesting take on how to exit the series. You have to admit, they're pushing harder and harder in a time where more of us have to walk on eggshells.

No. But Mexico as a nation is ranked below on the social ladder compared to a the UK.

Kind of like how the Japanese would do/say something once in a while that would be deemed insulting to the Korean and Chinese Nationals.

Another example: when the US makes fun of Canada, we get more insulted compared to an American being insulted by Canada. They just would not take it as personal.
