Hi I am leaning towards seagate 2Tb at the moment

WD Greens spin down when not in use so if you're looking to use it for your OS, i dont recommend it, get WD Blue or Black for those purposes.

I can vouch for the reliability of a Seagate drives. Never had a problem with them.

Both good choices if you ask me, so you can really just go eeny-meeny-miny-moe with it.

I've had issues with Seagate Ext HD's like no other. I wouldn't recommend them.

Mind you, I've had one for 3+ years, and the other for 2ish, both are starting to "click" and not be recognized when plugged in. They work good for short periods of time, but if you are transferring large amounts (i.e. 400 GB), they don't handle it too well.

If you are looking for speed, the WD green might not be your desired choice. It would be good for storage though.

All my HDD's are seagate, only one of them was messed up (7200.11 version) which I still have and is working fine. But it's clicking and I only use it for backup storage, so it hasn't failed on me "YET".

I'm using 2 - 2 TB WD Greens in my DNS-323 and haven't had any problems with them whatsoever. Before that, all my hard drives have been Seagate and the only time I had a problem was my 40GB drive years ago had a factory defect. Sent it in and got a new hard drive in a couple of weeks.

seagate has gone downhill since they acquired maxtor a few years back. WD on the other hand has been improving quality ever since.

They WD Black drives are only a few ms slower than the Velociraptors which make them the best buy for primary hard drives. the WD Green are excellent for backup or storage drives.

I used to be a dedicated Seagate guy, and in the early 2000's, they had great drives with excellent reliability.

This has completely changed in the last few years... there are major reliability issues with their last couple generations of drives.

29% of the reviews are single eggs... as in almost one out of every three people had a very bad experience with it.

The drive costs $10-20 more than the Seagate or WD, Considering the hassle and cost of doing a RMA on a defective drive, I will happily pay the difference to get ~20% higher reliability.

They don't distribute that Hitachi in Canada though for whatever reason... so the only place you can buy it is from NewEgg Canada.

I would stay away from Seagate to. I too used to be a loyal Seagate user but after having 4 different drives die on me this pass year I'm going to stay far away from them now.

Sure... but it won't help if it dies on you after one month. Yeah, it might have a 3-year or 5-year warranty, but it'll cost like $15 to ship it back to them... nevermind the hassle of trying to recover data.

that's why i said DOA. the 3/5 yr warranty and shipping charges are all dependent on the hard drive you pick. i didn't say not to pick the samsung/hitachi. besides, if the drive died you'd have to ship it away anyways. and if you pick through the reviews, samsung warranty is very difficult to deal with.

Not sure what is with all the bad reviews of the WDs and Gates. I personally am using 3x Ears20s in my home server/music/movie streamer PC. The only thing is it goes to sleep often and there is a slight "wake up" time of 3-5 sec when you open a file. Also got a few jitters when streaming full 1080 .ts files but its a 5.2krpm and most of my HD vids are 720.

I bought my sis a gate 2tb from a recent sale and so far no complains.

Maybe, I'm just lucky?..

If it's just for storage, I don't think you would go wrong with either. Maybe I'm just lucky and missed the bad batches, but I've never had any problems with Seagate or WD drives.

I picked up the 2TB WD Green a few weeks ago because it was cheaper - no problems, no complaints.
