Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 4.3-inch display, 1GHz dual-core processor, HSPA+, Bluetooth 3.0, and 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi. Additionally, Paran says that this new handset weighs 116g (4.09 ounces) and is 8.49mm thick
I likey... time to save up money!
Galaxy S2 Root/Unlock How To:
1) Download the following files:
Samsing KIES - What's new for Software & Manual SAMSUNG (http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/mobilesoftwaremanual/mobilesoftwaremanual.do?page=MOBILE.SOFTWARE.MANUA L)
Odin for Windows and CFRoot Kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
To check what version you have: hit Menu / Settings / About phone / Baseband version
2) Install KIES
Unzip the 2 files in Odin
Unzip the 1 file in CF-Root-SGS2_XXXXXX.zip
3) Power off the phone.
Hold the following buttons down: Home and Volume Down. While holding these buttons down hold down the Power button too. So now that you're holding all 3 down the phone will turn on. When you see the Samsung GTi91000m you can release all the buttons. You should now be in Download mode with a big green Android.
http://localhostr.com/file/RCKvAM3/down%20sgs2.jpg
4) Plug in the phone.
Run Odin3 v1.85.exe
It should detect your phone in the first box under ID:Com and will highlight it yellow
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/5705/odinm.jpg
Make sure that Auto-Reboot is checked and F.reset time are the only ones checked
Click PDA and choose the tar file CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4 you extracted in step 2
Click Start.
When it's done flashing your phone will reboot. Unplug.
5) Now you're rooted and back in Android. You'll need to connect using wifi and install the following app:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.helroz.galaxysunlock&feature=search_result
Run this app. Click Step 1 then when it's ok click Step 2
Your phone should black screen and reboot. Give it a minute. After it reboots you're unlocked.
(Note: When all is working. Copy out the Galaxy_S_Unlock folder on the phone via USB and keep it in a safe place. This folder holds your encrypted IMEI/Mac Addresses/Etc.)
I'm doing this all from memory so hopefully I haven't missed anything.
FAQs:
1) Yellow Triangle: Means you're running custom kernel/rom. Doesn't affect anything. Can be removed but it's a lot of work for nothing.
2) Bell GPS navigation: Does not work if you aren't a Bell customer. This app checks to see if you're on the Bell network before it'll activate the license so use a different app like Navigon, Copilot, Sygic, etc.
3) The unlock app can be uninstalled when you're done. It's not needed afterwards.

The point is - all these problems should be fixed by samsung itself. Not through 3rd party apps, kernels, etc.

Yeah, it's true. It's really sad that I have to resort to another ROM to fix my GPS and get awesome battery life.
If Samsung devoted more time into user experience and their bloatware, maybe I would save up for one. I know Samsung is a hardware behemoth but damn, with all that money they are raking in, crappy software should not be their forte.

ya the phone sucks in battery vs the iphone. I'm on a custom rom/kernal with juice defender and it lasts pretty long. But it feels better and quicker than iphone 4. The samoled screen also takes more battery too.

shaping up to be a Q3 release
During the Nexus S launch event this morning I had a quick conversation with Samsung VP Paul Brennan who stated the incredibly thin Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S II will be released in Canada. They are still working our the carrier details but he’s optimistic that it’ll launch either really late Q2, but more likely early Q3 time period (definitely in time for the back-to-school time).
No word on price points but Brennan also stated that Canada might beat the United States in releasing this device.
how disappointing considering my contract is up early June and It's being released in UK May 1
I dont want to wait until end of the summer, I guess they want to compete with the upcoming IPhone? Odd that he also mentioned Canada will likely get it first before US.
http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/04/14/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-coming-to-canada-by-early-q3/
The release date for the UK, Germany, and the rest of Europe has been pushed to early May. Read our full article here
Alright, we have to warn you about this one. It’s not looking pretty, but at least we now know.
We have just learned that the Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 Android 2.3 Gingerbread Smartphone will be released at the beginning of May 2011. The 16GB version will be priced at $820USD, while the 32GB will cost $949. This information has been acquired from popular online electronic retailer Clove.
Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy S II is looking to be one of the most expensive smartphones on the market. It does say that the prices are subject to change, and we sure hope so. Given Samsung’s history of failing to update their phones, in conjunction with the fact that customers can get the Atrix (on contract) for as low as $129.99, it’s likely that there will be little interest in this particular Superphone. We all know this phone is packing amazing hardware, but few can justify paying over $1000 for a smartphone.
Would you pay $1000 for this phone?
Check out of our review of the Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II, i9100) here.
We’ve also compared the Motorola Atrix and the Samsung Galaxy S2 here
Also, it appears that the radio inside the Samsung Galaxy S2 will enable it to properly function on AT&T’s network, so it’s likely it will be offered their soon, and thankfully, probably subsidized by a healthy amount. In Canada, it will function on Rogers, Bell, and Telus’ HSPA+ networks, and be able to receive healthy download/upload speeds. No word yet on whether it will function on T-Mobile, but we will keep you posted as soon as we know.

using google currency converter, the purchase price in korea comes to 755CAD.
here its 2 year specific plan contract, a 55$ plan will make the phone about 220$ CAD. and you pay it monthly so 10$ more every month to pay off the hardware.
fuckkkk im on the waitlist, suppose to come friday.
and samsung has bad customer support overseas, but in korea i think its pretty good. already a couple updates were released.
and im guessing the battery life will be better over there since it prbbly wont have NFC and DMB feature.

Nothing has been released for Canada, and very minimal information has been released for the US. By minimal I mean only their names have been released, and a silicone case which will be shared by all 3 carriers in the US.

^Any source? Or just pure speculation?
Does Samsung have any say on how much carriers charge for subsidized phones?
If so, it'd be pretty dangerous for Samsung to allow any carrier to price it that high, considering you can get an iPhone for less than half of that price on the same 3 year plan.
I know it's apples and oranges, but if you offered the average person the two phones at those two prices, I would bet that they would choose the iPhone.
Judging by Samsung's apparent strategy with the original SGS, they want as many people as possible holding a SGS2. It won't happen at that price.
just speculation
im thinking all in 300$ or a little less for new customers on a 3 year since its supposed to this "super phone" i wana see how this and the iphone 4s compare against each other since my contract is up early 2012
twitchyzero
05-16-2011, 01:31 PM
anything over $200 on a 3 yr contract is too much..the majority of the public's going to compare it with the <150 price of getting an ip4...that's why i don't get how they are expecting to sell the arc/play @ 250

While you're correct that it's much more phone than an iPhone4, there's only a small fraction of the market (such as us) who can actually appreciate the differences. Only that small fraction will think to pay the premium. And with that in mind, not everyone in that group would pay that for a phone (I know I wouldn't).
As for the Arc, it looks to be 100 on a 3yr plan on the website. If they had the audacity to charge more than that, there'd be a lot of SE phones sitting in their boxes :P

The majority of the people would only get this phone if its cheaper than an iphone 4, thats not including us people who actually read up on phones and the specs. Most of my friends think my galaxy s is some big piece of inferior to the iphone crap. That being said I still might go for the htc sensation cause kies blows and I still can't update my phones software.

I'm assuming you're not just being a green team hater. Do you have benchmarks? I'd like to read more about this.
Benchmarks only tell half the story but here are some to back it up.
http://androidcommunity.com/galaxy-s-ii-vs-qualcomm-mdp-vs-g2x-dual-core-battle-of-quadrant-benchmark-doom-20110510/
The teg2 IS a dual-core, but it's basically very late to the game since it was supposed to launch last year and hence falls behind when compared to other "new" dual-core phones. The biggest disappointment of the T2 IMO is the fact it lacks NEON support and hence won't play any high-profile h.264 encoded videos (ie, mkv rips, youtube hd rips, basically any HD video rip you might download). It's a waste of power really, and I know this from personal experience. Had it launched in a timely matter it's performance may have been more forgiving, but when you have current gen Hummingbird processors playing MKV rips no problem and a dual-core Nvidia stuttering every 2 seconds I think that's embarrassing.
Exynos > Dual core Snapdragon > ...Tegra 2
edit: when I say any videos I really do mean 720p and up resolutions without re-incoding. If you want to read more, just search Tegra 2's and NEON support. It's not a very well publicized issue but when you have phones that do HDMI out/mirroring I think it's a PITA I have to reincode every video.

Is there a way to make the clock on the lock screen a 12 hour clock?
It looks like it's linked to the system clock (see top right). I would suspect that if you set that to 12-hour, you'll have what you want.
And as for people that are wondering if this will ever hit Rogers- it will. Samsung's strategy is to saturate the market with their phones across as many carriers as they can. They did it with the original SGS, and they'll do it with the SGS2.
What you should be questioning is not whether Rogers will carry it, but when since it took Rogers months to release the Captivate after the initial Bell release (the Vibrant).

- The Wifi icon shows a weaker than normal signal, but speed are not compromised. I can easily top out my home internet connection. My Wifi connection icon shows one bar less than my other devices.
- As for battery life, after about 10 charge cycles, I get about 18-20hrs on a single charge (depends on how CPU intensive my daily tasks are). I average roughly 2hrs of "screen on time".
a) I'm on a custom ROM at stock speeds. Unfortunately, I never kept the stock ROM long enough to compare with stock ROM's battery life. But I don't think the custom ROM would make too big of a difference
Another thing to note is that Android currently has a bug with dual-core processors, which is causing the phone to not enter "suspend mode" while the screen is off. My "awake time" graph shows the phone is awake for extended periods of time even while the screen is off. ("Awake time" should almost match the "display on" time). So there is definitely something weird going on there.
The good news is that Google has supposedly fixed this in 2.3.4, which should be coming to the SGS2 in the next month or so. I anticipate battery life to be even better in the future.

I was going to pick up a Samsung Galaxy S 2 today but I decided against it because I was advised that Bell and Rogers was going to receive this phone in the near future. I can't justify spending that much money only to have the phone become deflated in value when it becomes available at a contract price.
That being said, I've decided to go with the HTC Sensation; which apparently has a better screen (qHD).

Thanks for clearing that up; I couldn't figure out the difference between the two displays other than the resolution. I figured qHD would've been better since it's newer technology but apparently not in all aspects.
In my opinion, there is no point in having a beautiful screen if your battery can't handle it. And you can definitely see a color difference between the phones looking at the pictures; Samsung is definitely more vivid.

Think it has to do with the ip5 spotting dual core A5s, so they wanna 1 up it (like how tab 8/10 was "thinner" than ipad2).
I don't care much for .2ghz upgrade, I am keeping my fingers crossed for a 32g version and maybe the new OS.

I am not too sure.
But my thoughts on the s2..... This is my first android phone, prior I have had every iPhone.
At this moment I have a s2, iphone 4 and a Torch.
The torch is a piece of shit I only use it for BBM due to work.
The iPhone has always been my favorite phone because I like the way it works and the app store is spectacular.
The s2 is extremely fast but not THAT big of a difference between an iPhone 4 of course its noticeable but its not enough for me to get rid of the iPhone.
The android app store is no where as organized and as good as the iPhone 4 and doesn't have many apps but the main ones that I use on iPhone is in the marketplace as well.
The brightness sucks on the s2 even though its maxed out but you can tell Samsung sacrificed brightness for color which is extremely noticeable and I love the iPhone 4's brightness a lot better.
The s2 comes with way too fucking many programs that are useless and not needed... compared to what iPhone and Blackberry offers off that bat.
The androids gmail app sucks but its fast...and the email app on it is a lot better but slow.
Lots of other things I need to notice when I use it more.
As a phone the s2 is great but perhaps I am biased due to using an iPhone for so long
.
Also the music store sucks shit on the Android.
my 2 cents.

^ yah been looking at comparisons vids between the two and snapdragons really can't match the speed of samsung's exonys chips. the only advantage the sensation has is its build quality and some ppl prefer the sense UI.
Build quality is subjective. I had 2 HTC phones (Dream & Desire Z) before I eventually picked up a SGS2.
A lot of people assume plastic = bad build quality. I think most people picture the cheap, hard, creaky plastic that cracks easily. I can assure you that the SGS2 does not use the cheap stuff. It's soft and flexible:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErXqnQKs-tA
But after owning my first plastic phone, I've realized that the use of more plastic materials has it's benefits.
1) the weight savings. Not only is it lighter to carry, it's also flexible, thus absorbing impacts instead of resisting them.
2) Plastic also doesn't scratch as easily. (You should have seen the metal battery cover on my DesireZ from just resting it on table tops)
3)* This is just an observation with no scientific evidence, but, I think the use of a metal shell reduces cellular signal strength - Somehow my SGS2 is able to get reception where both my HTC phones couldn't. I'm no expert, but somehow, in my head, this makes sense.
As for the whole HTC Sense UI thing: I liked it while I was using it, but now that I'm off SenseUI, I can't say that I miss it.

If you're expecting an iPhone, it's not. Android definitely isn't for everybody.
Just because it does something differently than iOS, it doesn't make it worse. When we're used to using something and am familiar with the way things work, we tend to compare, and if it's not what we're used to, it's labelled negatively.
For example, iOS users love their iTunes, however, I frickin hate iTunes, iOS and how it manages music. I'm a simple drag and drop guy. I don't like organizing my music by Artist, then Album, and then setting up playlists to play the songs I feel like listening to.
I'm old school. I create folders by genre and date, (i.e. "HouseMix-2011-06", or "90s R&B"), and dump all the corresponding music in there. And when I want to put that music onto my phone, I plug it in as USB mounted drive, drag n' drop.
To me, this makes sense, and I don't need a 300MB app + bloatware to do it.

Oh of course, thats why I said I am biased due to using it for so long. But My work pays for everything I buy and use on the phone and buying songs on the android market SUCKS where on iTunes its done so nicely and setup so nicely.

As a phone the s2 is great but perhaps I am biased due to using an iPhone for so long
.
Also the music store sucks shit on the Android.
my 2 cents.
Brightness too low? Wow. On my Galaxy S I keep the brightness at the lowest and I still find that too bright sometimes.
Also programs can be erased. Music store is in it's infancy so I expect it won't be as good for now.

My Genuine Samsung case finally arrived.
Genuine Samsung i9100 Galaxy S 2 II Black Cool Vent: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5123NXD4EmL.@@AMEPARAM@@5123NXD4EmL
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51-3OncpaqL.jpg
My quick review:
PROs:
- Keeps the phone thin, yet adds enough thickness so its easier to hold. The SGS2 is so thin and wide, that it's easy for it to twist out of your grip.
- Adds more grip
- Vented to prevent the "oven effect" that some cases cause (those that own this phone will know how hot this phone can get under long periods of high load)
- Lip around camera lens to protect it
- Lip around the screen to protect the screen when it's face down.
- Not made of cheap plastic....its like a grippy plastic (not as grippy as those phone condoms, though)
CONs:
- Pricey for what it is, but I guess that's expected for Genuine Samsung Accessories.
- Had to order all the way from UK because I couldn't find a local retailer here that sells it.
- No bumper protection on the top and bottom. Only side bumpers.
- When the phone only weighs 116g, this case adds roughly 15-20% more weight.
- This case probably won't do much for "drop protection".

I found that on my SGS 1 Captivate, that the case everybody ranted and raved about, while very very good wasn't perfect. They talked about the Body Glove case like it was THE case to get. But when I got it, the fit was just a bit loose for my tastes, especially around the edges. I bought a $2 case off of ebay, one of these.

You're going to be hard pressed to convince me not to buy a cheapy TPU case off ebay. Very hard. It's snug, more stiff, and the cutouts are spot on in size.

I just got rid of my Nexus One after having it for 1+ years. I've never used a phone for that long! I'm waiting for Bell to release the Galaxy S2 so the market price drops and will be picking it up.
How come you never decided to upgrade to the Nexus S?

Oh, this is my first android, of course it impresses me, but like I said I have been using an iPhone since they had it. Speed the g2s has it but in the end its a newer phone and we have to see what apple has to offer.
Also that video that compares the speed of both phones is weird... I have never had an iPhone that slow for me and never had the g2s that fast for me...
In the end both are great phones and I will be continuing using both. well all if you count the piece of shit work blackberry torch...
I want to fucking throw it at the wall.
but all in all, I am not dissapointed at the phone, I m just too used to what Apple has to offer for me. The only real issue I had with it is that the brightness its not as strong comparing to a Moto Atrix where the Atrix brightness is 2x as strong. But the color of the s2 RAPES the Atrix.
I am just not used to Android and if they have a better app store + music store it would be completely different.
In the end its a great phone.

On wifi the SG2 is a lot faster than Iphone 4 but on 3G/HSPDA depending on which network you are with the speed varies. My SG2 on Rogers was about 3 secs slower than my friends Iphone 4 on Telus also depending on the location.

I waited 8 months till I upgraded from Nexus One to S. Nexus One is still a decent phone and has a huge backing in the Dev community with roms etc. Still debating on which rom I want to root my SG2 with waiting on Cyanogen.

That doesn't mean the SG2 is faster/slower...all that confirms is that certain networks and certain areas are better/faster than others...

Agreed. To this day I'm still browsing through the various roms and comparing them to other phones on the boards. Nexus One definitely has a lot more updates and advances day to day than most/any of the other phones on XDA.
The only downfalls of the Nexus in my opinion was the screen (there were batches of screens with deep, true colors and then there were batches of them with washed out colors...I got the washed out one twice.) And the battery life was abysmal.

Are you on Belus by any chance?
My friend is complaining about the same thing with his phone, and he's on Bell. I'm on Rogers and don't have any problems with mine.
I wonder if there is a network feature included in the phone that isn't supported by Belus.

knowing how Bell does things in the past, there are only 3 ways of getting one:
1) activate a line with them.
2) go to a shady Bell dealer and pay the guy an extra $100 or so on top of the retail price.
