My friends and I are making a team for vihl this year. Could you guys recommend some good shops for us to get our hockey equipment from? We know about the hockey shop, cyclone taylor, sportmart/sportchek etc. Anywhere else that has good prices? My one friend was talking about going to the states and looking for stuff over there. Organization, staff, and competition is way better than pich. VIHL owner actually cares. pich rests on their laurels that they've been around longer but it's starting to erode.

That pretty much sums it up, I've been with PICH for years as well. They say that they will have 2 refs, but there are a lot of games when only 1 shows up. For a few years, the scheduling had been poor and we would be told of changes the day or two prior to the game. Stats aren't updated the same way VIHL will update that night or the next morning.

I have no idea what the hardness of mine are. They're the new type that's a dual pour as they call it where the middle is hard and the outter is softer. I think i need new wheels as I can feel a slight slip when I skate on sportcourt in Langley. Might be different for me when I try it on cement.

How's your hockey background? Since you are looking for a higher div, I would assume you already played some sort of rep/house ice? To give you an idea, platinum is generally the guys who played some sort of organized hockey since they were kids(5 yrs old and up kinda thing) either in ice or roller. I don't know the actual number but probably a few of them played up to JR A/B. A good couple of ice players that played in platinum would be David Jones of Avalache and Gilbert Brule of the Oilers. Although I think Brule was a sub only, where as Jones played the whole season before his rookie year in Colorado. Other good notables (roller tourny players) are Cory Bishop, Jon Woodyard, Kirk French(sponsored by Mission Hockey, not sure if he still is). Pretty much if you feel you can score at will, you will fit into Platinum/Gold.
If you played some good amount of rep/house leagues, then you will be fine in Silver.

I played ice for a long time, and indoor ball hockey for the last 3 years. Actually when I made the jump from ice to ball I couldn't believe how much more tiring it was.
We also rented planet ice a couple times so our roller hockey guys could scrimmage against some actual teams. I should of asked what teir they were. But I knwo what you mean, I couldn't believe how much resistance there was when you tried to skate compared to outdoors. It's pretty slippery too.

Is that what came with your skates? Kind of weird they would do that, generally, the wheels are the same softness/hardness across the board. I would suggest investing in a proper set of wheels, otherwise, it'll hurt your skating and you won't have much fun falling face first or on your ass the whole game. A set of wheels should last you a good 2 years(unless your 6'0 200lbs and your squash your wheels every couple months)

Would that be recreationally/friendly scrimms or rep/house ice hockey? How do you describe your skill in general. Skating forward ok without tripping over yourself? Skate backwards(non of that noob wiggling backwards), good backwards crossovers? Good power stops? Shooting/stick handling skills?
If your decent, ie no prob with skating, decent wrist and snap shot, can actually take slapshops without fanning or falling down afterwards, you should be able to play in copper(?) the one down from bronze. It has been a few years since I've played in bronze and I was a pretty average player there, I know the skill level has gotten a lot better since then and I don't think I can keep up anymore(age also becoming a factor) but if your an average player with decent skills, anywhere from copper to nickel is your best bet

15 years ice, very good skating and shooting.
3 years in ball hockey, very good shooting.
My only real concern is getting walked by some 25 year old superstars. I'll just go watch a game or two and see what its like.

hardness of a wheels isnt always associated with outdoor indoor.. there are some really sticky wheels that are above 78a. Depending if you are a foward or D, you want a diff setup and do not want the same grippiness across the board.. personal preference, but I would want softer wheels on the back and harder up front (as a forward)... so straight away speed isnt affected by soft wheels that have too much friction.

Elbow pads are needed. I don't think you need hockey pants, as some people don't even wear girdles either. Visors aren't required, but you need a mouth guard if you don't have a full cage otherwise you won't be covered for dental insurance should anything happen.

I wear a cage. It's all personal preference, but the majority wear a visor

unless you want to wear them for rec ice hockey too, you might as well get those dri fit shirts with padding on themt hat mission adn rbk make for roller.
yea i think it might be the 5030. want them because im thinking about doing ice hockey as well but also because im kinda missing shoulder pads as i block a shit load of shots and in the higher tiers not many people had weak shots

Hey guys, more newb questions.
As far as wheels go, would 72mm for both front and 80mm for both rear work? I'm not sure what I usually use. Or for indoor do you generally make sure they're all the same size?
And also are there certain sticks you aren't aloud to use? Like composite?
Thx :)
edit: figured out sizing. As for hardness/softness, Im only 155lbs, but I'd like a wheel that will let me get up to speed quick. Would 74 be too soft?

74a is fine. I'm roughly 150lbs and that's what I use. Also, 72mm/80mm is pretty standard for hi/lo chassis. You can also go 72mm/76mm as that will allow you to carry more speed into your turns. As for stick, you can use anything, although I wouldn't use a OPS for roller, go with a composite shaft with a good blade.

if you have the money... get a shaft and composite replacement blades... i just used my base stick on roller and the balde held up very well.. mind you, i was never afraid to use a shattered blade in roller bc the puck is so light it barely effects my shot

Also when I'm putting new bearings into wheels will I need anything like washers? Or can I just take apart the wheels/bearings that came with my rollerblades and use the stuff in there?

there are always going to be guys playing at a lower level than they belong. a lot of guys want to stay on a team with their friends, who mostly don't belong in a higher tier. if teams are playing to the best to their ability and blowing other teams out, they will get bumped up eventually.

Mehhhh not really a big deal, I definitely understand when players wanna stay on a team with their friends but there are also people who intentionally join a zinc team just to light it up. That in my eyes is stupid, if I was a player that is capable in playing in the mid tier i'd definitely do it.
I'm not gonna drop names but I was score keeping a zinc game and one team completely lit it up and the other team was just trying to control the puck for more then 5 seconds. It was so lopsided it wasn't funny

it isn't so much friends... well it can be, but it is pretty hard to compose a lower div team that has everyone on the same level... with higher divs, it is easier because you just get everyone you know that is decent to good.. with lower divs.. you dont want bottom of the barrell players.. naturally you want a couple guys that are game breakers... even in the lower divisions... if a team has one guy that is a ton better than the rest, all you have to do is key in on that guy. chances are, if he tries to pass to his teammates, his teammates won't be able to do much with the puck. conversely, the teammates won't be able to really feed the ringer the puck either.

Hey guys, I have a technical question.
When I bought my blades a few weeks ago, I tried them out right away and found that they were quite 'slow'. It felt like with each stride, there was resistance. Even at very low speeds or just gliding, I noticed that they would slow down much faster then usual.
Then when I would go all out it would get much worse and my body/legs woudl get ahead of my feet sometimes because there was so much resistance in the wheels/bearings.
First thing I did was buy new wheels/bearings because I though it would fix it. I basically just went for the most expensive stuff I could find cuz I figured it would solve my problem. But it hasn't.
My wheels are 74a, 72-72-76-76mm Labeda something rather. And Bearings are bsb abec 9. I also have solid spacers I'm using.
Is there somethign I'm missing here? Some sort of special lube? Are my screws not tight enough??
ANy help would be great tia.
I had labeda grippers come with my skates and they blew, i switched up to hyper pro 250's. I saw improvement and I havnt even bothered using spacers with them. if your interested im most likely selling the ones i bought for this season as it looks like my season ended within 5mins lol.

I'm #3. Being able to skate good doesn't mean that you shouldn't be in the div. What if you're a crazy skater but suck at stick handling, can't shoot, can't play d, and can't score. Being a good skater definitely helps but is nothing if you can't do the other things.
Some of the teams in our div like the seamen and beasts have played with each other in previous seasons. We got killed by the beasts our first game because 90% of our team had never played organised hockey before. It's really all about positioning. If you can get that down then you should be ok.
EDIT: Looks like The Jets got bumped up. I noticed there's 2 other teams in the Zinc 1 div now as well and looks like your team got bumped down to Zinc 2. We're still playing you tomorrow though :)

I've made sure to tighten just right so that the wheel spins as long as it can with very little wobble. -_-
It actually didn't feel as slow tonight, maybe I just need to work them in a bit?
On a side note, I got some of my bearings dirty, whats a good cleaning process? I'll google it as well....
Bearings should be sealed semi-decently. The dust that's normally on roller floors are usually quite coarse and should not get into the balls inside the bearing, I just take the wheel out and give them a wipe down once or twice a season.
If you are hardcore, you can pop the c-clip out of the bearing, take the shield off, clean and lube the balls inside, then reassemble

anyone know if using indoor wheels, outdoor will ruin them for indoor play on polished concrete?
other than wearing out faster
outdoor as in simlar to a outdoor tennis court. ex. outdoor hockey at Hickey Park

If Hickey Park is anything like the outdoor rink at 41st past knight then yes they will ruin them. The wheels will chunk if you try to skate hard.

^what team do you play for?
it isn't so much friends... well it can be, but it is pretty hard to compose a lower div team that has everyone on the same level... with higher divs, it is easier because you just get everyone you know that is decent to good.. with lower divs.. you dont want bottom of the barrell players.. naturally you want a couple guys that are game breakers... even in the lower divisions... if a team has one guy that is a ton better than the rest, all you have to do is key in on that guy. chances are, if he tries to pass to his teammates, his teammates won't be able to do much with the puck. conversely, the teammates won't be able to really feed the ringer the puck either.
Yea our team is like that, just friends playing but our captain was like tier MVP last year. We have a lot of crappy guys too so it balances out.
Good thing Jets got bumped up 3 tiers. Team is full of ice players and heatscores.

anyone else think the roller puck needs to be a touch heavier? it's way too light. and no i dont think it will glide less if it is heavier.. if it were heaver, the potential momentum would actually cause the puck to glide further, imo. anways, it feels like shooting a hockey ball out there.

coming off ice, the puck is very light.. especially with slappers.. you have no sense of whether you hit the puck well or not.. i guess i am just bitching, lol.

it is very true.. I played goalie a lot during street hockey days, and started back up and on blades for the first time about 5-6 years ago in pich.. took a good year to get used to it as it is totally different.. but now i am vey comfortable.
it is true, i think like a player in net, and vice versa when i am out. i know the things goalies have to go through and it gives me a bit of an edge. as a goalie in a lower div, it is actually harder to predict things as the players generally just have their head down and try to shoot as hard as they can/not lose the puck.. fluttering pucks are way harder to read than hard straight shots too.

I play D.. I have had ONE breakaway all season. I will admit, I am not known to be a playmaker and usually have a ratio of 2:1 for goals to assists, but this year has started off weird. Also, it isn't my fault if I pass the puck and my teammates don't finish. It is Nickel II you guys.

Suit up and play as a D or Forward for us next game and play on the same line as me, I guarantee I can get at least a couple goals.
Playing on an iron team last year was kinda shitty cause I was one of the worst on my team, but at the same time I had good line mates that were capable of actually receiving passes and setting up decent plays. I remember getting a hat trick one game and feeling like a boss till they only credited me for 1 goal. Shitting on parade ftw
