They've been making $20 silver coins for decades. Pretty much any gold / silver coin made by any government mint is legal tender and can technically be spent at the pub. And I'm not talking about melting down the coins either.
What that said, this one doesn't look half bad.

Nice, will order one and use it as my new card protector.

sure, but if its a 1oz silver coin, its only worth $5 even tho 1oz right now is worth over $30. they'll take it for face value which means you're getting ripped off.

what do you mean by this?
at it is likely that your order will be cancelled. they only minted 200,000.
And this has been on redflagdeals for awhile. so i'm sure they're at their limit.

it's only 1/4 oz. and a 200,000 mint is huge from a collectors standpoint. (IE not a collector coin)
so really it's woth about $7

I had mine shipped via XPresspost. I have no confidence in the post office - letter carrier is probably on crack (missing/stolen mail, delivered to wrong address, etc.). At least with Xpresspost, there's tracking.

Highly unlikely you're going to come across this from getting change at a store... very few will end up being circulated... everyone just buys them and stashes it away...
even tho is legal tender, will all places accept this... not everyone knows about this $20 coin... that might be a problem...
It's the same as cash... which means that stores can refuse to accept it if they want to. Stores have the right to ask for any type of payment they want... even bananas if they wanted to. However, being legal tender, it MUST be accepted if being used as payment towards a debt.

Again, legal tender does NOT mean stores have to accept it in exchange for product.
Legal tender only means that if you're using it to repay a DEBT, it MUST be accepted.
When you're at a store, you are not in DEBT. The seller is free to choose whatever type of payment he wants, including refusing legal tender.

This is pretty cool the fact it's selling for face value.
Don't most of the "collectors" coins come out with a face value of say...$50 but sell for like $150? And when you take it to a bank or whatever, it's still worth what the face value is regardless what you paid for it. I think only when selling to a collector is when it actually has better than face value.
Too bad I didn't know about this...I was home a couple weeks ago and the RCM store on Granville was open. I coulda just walked in and picked it up in person. Snap.

I ordered a long time ago probably even before it was posted on rfd and got it yesterday. It seems so small and thin compare to a silver maple leaf. Here is a picture of a quarter, silver maple leaf, and the $20 silver coin. The silver maple leaf is worth about $35 silver value. The $20 coin is worth about $8 silver value. The Canadian Mint is probably laughing at us selling us $8 worth of silver for $20 :squint:
The coin may have 8 bucks worth of silver, but still......... The mint is selling a coin at face value. There's costs involved with designing, striking, packaging, sending, etc. the coin. It will never bring any collector more than face value unless there is some significance in its design or if silver prices skyrocket to some ridiculous price. In ten or more years, the coin may yeild 15 bucks, if that, at auctions. Still, the banks have to give you 20 bucks "real" cash for the damn thing. People collect all kinds of shit for all kinds of reasons. At least with this one, all you lose is the time you took to order it and the huge amount of space it takes up. I hope this uncirculated coin at least comes in some kind of container, LOL.
murd0c
02-25-2011, 08:16 AM
It big thing about the coin is it's only available to Canadians so all of the american collecters are really trying to get their hands on them. That's who I bought them for. He said 200k is not many and with them being legal tender they will be worth money in the future.

Actually, you could also lose out because your $20 silver coin is not fully hedged against inflation, the silent killer of an economy. At current silver prices, there is about $8.40 worth of silver in that coin, so the price of silver will have to more than double before this becomes a smart investment (but by then you wouldn't be able to buy it). Crucially, if you speculate that silver prices will indeed double in the near term, you'll be better off investing in silver directly, without having to hold physical silver at home or where ever you keep your coins.
The coin looks shiny though. I like shiny things.

Isn't that like complaining that your $20 bill will get taken for face value, when the paper and ink clearly isn't worth that much?
Not precisely, depending on how you view money. Unlike a $20 silver coin (BTW: it's not limited edition because the Canadian mint have been making them, and making a profit on them, for over a decade now), a $20 bill is something I will deposit in a bank and invest, having the $20 work for me via various investment vehicles. A $20 coin, by contrast, is something I have to worry about misplacing, forgetting, or having stolen. I have a friend who likes silver, but he buys bricks of it (like real bricks) and keeps them under his coffee table :fullofwin:

I already have a safety deposit box in which I keep valuables. And there's definitely a novelty factor in having a collection that you can pull out to display if you want. I purchased a number of different silver coins over the last few years. Most of them are not rare or particularly valuable or low mintage but they've still nearly doubled in value. Viewed purely as an investment they've done better than anything else I have.

profit.
Same logic as what I have. Doubling in value is a lot better then a lot of investments people do, so I dont know why people knock it. Plus if currency ever tanks or world goes to hell in a hand basket, people wont take paper for barter, but they will take precious metals (Silver/gold/etc) like they have for thousands of years. Always a backup plan, no matter how unlikely that may seem at the time.

So silver he bought in 2003 for $4 bucks, and 2009 for $10 bucks is now worth $30 an ounce, id say his investment was amazing returns wise if he cashed in right now.
This is a very controversial coin from the mint. I believe it's a quick cash grab from the mint. They stopped production on the regular silver maple and made this 1/4oz silver coin.
On the mint's standpoint, they are make a huge profit by selling u 1/4 oz of silver for 20bucks. About 250% profit on the metal. But all they have to do is stamp it as 20 bucks. But the real value is only 8bucks.
On a consumers standpoint, it could be a good value because u think it's worth 20 dollar at all time. But, again, i'm not sure if it will be a circulated currency and if the vendors or shop owners will accept it as 20 dollar. You may argue that it's stamped $20, but could u really use it as $20? No one guarantee it. However, it's different on the regular silver/gold maple leaf because everyone knows that 1troy oz of silver is > $5, and 1troy oz of gold is >$50. So, almost anyone on earth will take SML or GML for bread or butter in exchange. So, now... Come to think about the real world about the SML and GML, what's the determining factor if a vendor will accept the coin as payment? It's the real value of the metal.
Would u take a 1oz SML as $5 payment or a 1/4oz silver coin as $20?
So, go figure if u can really use it as $20 at war times or when the world currency tanks.

Well no matter if vendors or shops will take it for its face value, a bank will. My gf works at a bank and people come in a lot asking what their gold or silver coin is worth, thinking the bank takes it for its gold or silver value, but leave pissed off cause the bank deals purely with its stamped value. You will always get $20 from the bank for your $20 dollar coin, but your $50 dollar gold coin with $1500 in gold will only fetch you $50 at a bank, so you will need to find a collector to get its value (its illegal to deface the queen, so it cant technically be melted down either).
^ guess your gf doesn't work for Scotia or BMO nesbitt burns. Just refer those customers to VBCE or Border Gold to get that $1500.

That could vary by branch or company. But as far as I know they are legally obligated to accept all canadian currency at face value. (stores most times wont take old paper money, but a bank will). Them buying coins for their silver or gold content isnt required but some may do it to get in on that market.

I buy a lot of coins at the post office actually. A lot cheaper to find a good post office with coins from a year or 2 old that coin people dont think to check, and when a coin becomes sought, can find them for Mint prices rather then market value. Done real good with the Dinosaur coins in that regard.
Edit: thanks for the link idea, gonna sign up and do just that!

Even better is when the post office clears old stock for up to 50% off. I stay away from coins, as collecting stamps is bad enough.
Anyone else get their coins?
I have yet to receive mine from Canada Mint, however, I received the three I ordered from Canada Post, on Friday. I ordered the coins from Canada Post way after I ordered the ones from Canada Mint. I don't think I wil be getting the Canada Mint any time soon, if at all.
Anyway, I just wanted to know if others had got theirs yet.

Got mine from Canada Mint a few weeks ago. The order arrived approximately 3 weeks after I placed an online order. It came in the picture posted above with a navy blue boxes stuck on a half folded black cardboard-style box.

I ordered from the mint the first day it was available and got it about a month later. Then I ordered from Canada Post afterwards and got it about a week and a half later. If you didn't get yours by now then you will probably never get it. There's also a shortage of silver 1oz Canadian Maple Leaf bullion too. No local bullion dealers have any in stock and don't know when they will receive more.

It's a 1/4 troy ounce so 7.78g. The mint is making a lot of money on these coins.

People in the US do this. They buy the un-circulated coin money the gov't has in the treasury and use the money to immediately pay off their credit cards. They don't lose any money and end up earning heavy duty reward points on their credit cards

Bumpy, not sure if anyone still buys these, but there are TWO new 100 for 100 coins out.
New $100 for $100 silver coins of 2014 (http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/new-100-for-100-silver-coins-of-2014-prod1890043#.UxT0UoU0xlo)
I wasn't even aware of it, and apparently they are sold out?
I found out because someone from Canadian Mint called me to inform me that there are 2 new coins out, and based on my past purchases, assumed I wanted these too. So he helped me place in an order over the phone from their "reserved stash" (my words not his lol). Pretty awesome service! I was surprised and pleased ;D
not sure if they are actually sold out or not, but thought you guys might wanna look. I like the new designs!
on another topic, anyone receive their 20 for 20 Loon coin yet? It says it would ship in January 2014, but its March and I have yet to receive them. The Bobcat is already out now too. (I subscribed for the 4 coins).
EDIT: NVM I got them already. Too many coins, so hard to keep track of them lolol. Hoping for the bobcat soon!
I just ordered the Bobcat coin. I have all 20 for 20 coins so far.

$10 coin next?
Kinda off topic. But why are coins still...coins? I'd rather have the small denominations in bill form, it's so much easier to carry than a bunch of jiggling heavy ass metal round discs.

So you wanna carry around bills with denominations of 5 cents 10 cents and quarters? do you know how thick your wallet will be.
If anyone is interested in the $100 for $100 bison coins or any of the $20 for $20 coins from the previous releases send me a PM, I'll trade you face value.
I still have all the documentation from mint.ca if required.

Ridiculous. Mint should go right to end game and offer a billion dollar coin for a billion dollars. Also, for a sec, I thought the engraving was the Canadian version of goatse

And buying it nets you 1000000000 credit card points for $1b.
And a coin dealer will write you a cheque for $1b when you sell to them.
