Chinas been dispelling protests for quite sometime especially in rural areas (rather large protests and riots i might add)

Its been known that the govt was concerned that riots would occur in major cities and we've heard of censoring the internet, to dissuade notions of revolutions, occurring as recently as the Egypt riots

So it looks like "someone"* tried to organize a revolution in China modeled after those seen in the middle-east

calling it a Mo-Li-Hua (Jasmine) Revolution the same name as the revolution in Tunisia

It called for people to come out with jasmine flowers in Shanghai, Beijing and other major cities within China

apparently the call first started on Feb 19 and it sounds that a few small groups showed up randomly @ the specified locations Along with a Huge presence of Police/Military uniformed/plaint clothed

Figures published last year suggested the Chinese government spent almost as much on maintaining internal security as on defence.

A leading government think-tank has said there have been 90,000 so-called "mass incidents" - examples of public unrest - in China every year since 2007.

Some in China have questioned whether there was ever a serious plan to get people out onto the streets last week.

Academics said it appeared the government was reacting to "rumours" by arresting activists.

Taiwan issued a call supporting dissent in China

DPP head calls for support of "jasmine movement"
2011/02/21 18:25:37

Taipei, Feb. 21 (CNA) Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen expressed concern and support Monday for a message posted on the Internet two days earlier calling for a "Chinese jasmine revolution."

...

In the face of the great challenges from China, the DPP will protect the values of Taiwan and support jasmine revolutions across China and Middle East, she said. (By Wen Kuei-hsiang and Maia Huang) ENDITEM/J

* Im guessing that unorganized call for a Jasmine Revolution may have even begun internally (by chinese intelligence) just so dissenters foolish enough to come out could be arrested and from then on be monitored

Oh yeah this is the webpage/blog that started the call

http://www.boxun.com/ (us based, chinese site)

yawn...

well the real news story here isn't the "rioting" but rather the obvious presence that China deployed to the gathering areas as well as all the onlookers attracted to the sites solely because of this Jasmine call

We'll know when the shit hits the fan cause they will shut down their internet.
Until then, from their government's perspective, it's nothing out of the ordinary.

I read about this and my first reaction was

and then I went to look up some videos and clips,
Regardless of the roots of this event, those damn Chinese people are having way too much fun with this. This "revolution" is essentially no different than your knockoff iPhone or LV bags. People see it and think it's cool. Cannot get it, they replicate it.

GTFO, China.

No matter how "bad" the state of some places poverty in China are.
If more than just the Government people are making money. It really is hard to have a revolt.... Loook at how many f-ing ppl are getting crazy rich.

well this was unorganized, it was just 1 simple message on that boxun website and yet people turned out

what most people in the West haven't really heard about are all the major riots and protests going on in the rural areas, major ones; but since the media etc is kept out you only get reports and maybe the odd hidden video

but like the Internal defense minister noted there have been 90,000 Mass Incidents of unrest since 2007

what's lacking though is organization that's why when this website posted a call China reacted so heavily because it was the first semblance of any kind of organization (albeit a weak one)
