It's not a test for short sightedness.

It's a "proof of concept" for how the mind constructs and interprets images.

You can get the same effect when you drink a lot.

"What do you see? Interestingly, research has shown that young children cannot identify the intimate couple because they do not have prior memory associated with such a scenario. What they WILL see, however, is the nine dolphins in the picture." Dolphins?

I don't know if this is true, but this popped into my head when I saw the OP.

I can see the dolphins and the couple but definitely the couple first.

here is something that actually may be useful

Prevent near-sightedness!
Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. "It's usually caused by near-point stress." In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles -- like the eyes -- into relaxing as well.
