authorities have accepted that eastern cities such as al-Bayda and Benghazi - traditional pockets of resistance to the government - are now under the control of the opposition.

"What we are witnessing today is unimaginable. Warplanes and helicopters are indiscriminately bombing one area after another. There are many, many dead," Adel Mohamed Saleh said in a live broadcast.
"Anyone who moves, even if they are in their car, they will hit you."
Ali al-Essawi, who resigned as Libyan ambassador to India, also told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that fighter jets had been used by the government to bomb civilians

The reports coming out of there are insane. The military is split and battling itself, mercenaries are firing on protesters, communications are being blocked, the son of Col Gaddafi stated that they would fight to the last bullet, etc.
This will be nothing close to peaceful.

Don't these two men have families back home?
How can they just abandon them?
I get they don't want to fire on innocents, but I would never leave my family. Surely, their families are going to be made an example of.

He's lost more cities today, and more military have changed sides to the people. Reports of his family members trying to flee the country. One report he may be threatening to blow up his oil pipelines.
The international community is turning further against him and struggling to evacuate all their people. Turkey is making the largest evacuation in it's history: 25,000 people.

Is there a quick chart that shows which countries are run by which systems and since how long?

Shit is beyond real
Cliff notes
-> Libyan troops are besieging a suburb near the heart of the capital with tanks!
-> Death toll in Benghazi reached 2,000.
-> Troops mobilized to attack oil fields.
-> Gaddafi's daughter was sacked by the UN as a goodwill ambassador.
-> The largest tribe in the country has revolted against Gaddafi.
-> Thousands of Chadian mercenaries are roaming the country.
-> Airports in many major cities destroyed or closed, Americans getting attacked while fleeing.
-> Gaddafi's son and family left but refused landing in Lebanon.
-> Not a SINGLE Libyan policeman on the border, all have fled and most of the countryside is pretty much in the hands of Chadian militias.
-> Massacre ongoing in Green square, "too many bodies to count"
-> US oil already hit $100/barrel just because of Libya
-> All major oil companies vacated the country
-> Gaddafi threatened to burn oil fields of rival tribes
-> Mass executions in western Libya near the capital
-> Gaddafi offering $2,500 per DAY to anyone willing to join his army, from any country
-> 30,000 protesters block Tripoli airport, Gaddafi & family unable to leave the country
-> Troops using live ammo in the streets of Tripoli on protesters
-> Massacre of government troops who refused to shoot at civilians
-> Eastern generals have joined the rebellion
-> 1 general alone gave 70 trucks, 250 heavy guns, artillery, and anti-aircraft to one rebel group
-> THOUSANDS of foreign mercenaries are entering Libya as Gaddafi digs in for war
-> Gaddafi announces that he will fight till the end and die in Libya, refuses to leave the country
-> Military heading towards oil field, expect gas to hit $5 barrel by tomorrow
-> All of eastern Libya has fallen, army digging into the capital, entire countryside and eastern Libya turning into anarchy and war between Libyan tribes and foreign militias

However, analysts warned that Opec’s spare capacity was of lower quality than Libyan crude, suggesting that members of the International Energy Agency, the consumer countries’ watchdog, might instead agree to release strategic stocks.

Mariah Carey paid $1M to sing at Libyan dictator Gaddafi’s son’s partyNew York, Jan 5 : Pop and R&B singer Mariah Carey has been paid one million dollars to sing at the New Year''s Eve party of Libyan dictator Colonel Gaddafi's son.
The host of the party, Saif, 36, is said to have spent the huge amount just to hear Carey, 38, sing three or four of her songs at the Nikki Beach Club on Caribbean island of St Barts.
But Carey's representative has, on the other hand, denied knowledge of any payment being made to the singer.

"The security forces fired indiscriminately on the demonstrators," said a resident of one of the capital's eastern suburbs that has seen previous clashes between opponents of the regime and its remaining loyalists.
"There were deaths in the streets of Sug al-Jomaa," the resident said.
The death toll since violence began remains unclear, though on Thursday Francois Zimeray, France's top human rights official, said it could be as high as 2,000 people killed.

i dont think its unbelieveable that he's firing on his own people... or any country for that matter...
look at the G8/G20 summits and how the police react in the USA/CAN now imagine how they would react if those people were revolting against the country (hell another example would be the LA Riots)
On another note they were interviewing President Clintons former top advisor on the news (cant remember his name) and he was explaining that Benghazi, Libya had always been the stronghold for Anti-Gaddafi tribes and that was where the protesting began so in Gaddafis view it was the separatists that have always been causing trouble are stirring shit up again
and as we see in china, turkey, iraq, etc separatist groups have always been attacked/killed etc
side note Al-Jazeera just showed Gaddafi speaking to a crowd of supporters and holy shit the group was larger than any protester group they've aired; so again expect this to last a long time

"Russia and China - which often oppose the use of force against a sovereign country as they believe it sets a dangerous precedent - abstained rather than using their power of veto as permanent members."
That's a big hurdle jumped.
The no fly zone being put into effect by UK and France is basically an act of war.
US may be assisting with what it already has in the area.
From another article:
"Beyond that, the diplomat said that officials in Britain, France and the United States were all adamant that Arab League forces take part in the military actions and help pay for the operations, and that it not be led by NATO, to avoid the appearance that the West was attacking another Muslim country."

If you guys have been following it Qaddafi has already taken back the country except for Benghazi which he was already attacking while the vote was taking place
All the UN voted for was a No Fly zone but there's no point since, again, Qaddafis won already
Its a shame they didnt vote for something like this against Israel when they bombarded Gaza
Or even Bahrain considering Saudi Arabia is now in there killing/kidnapping protesters and going into hospitals and beating doctors if they resist the Saudis in getting the injured protesters
just a note about how CNN etc are saying Qaddafi is just saying he's going to kill everyone even civilians "No Mercy" but he was referring to the rebel forces
and in the same speech Qaddafi saysHe told rebels to go home, adding that whoever lays down his weapons" would be pardoned.

Libya 'to halt military action'
Libya's government is declaring an immediate ceasefire after a UN Security Council resolution backed "all necessary measures" short of occupation to protect civilians in the country.
Libyan Foreign Minister Mussa Kussa said the ceasefire was intended "to protect civilians".
Western powers had been discussing how to enforce the UN resolution.
It was passed as troops loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi advanced on the rebel-held second city of Benghazi.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12787739
so its over, and it looks like the rebels held on to Benghazi at the time of ceasefire as they did prior to the revolt (Benghazi has always harbored anti-Qaddafi forces)

Gaddafi killed as Sirte falls - live coverage | World news | guardian.co.uk (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/middle-east-live/2011/oct/20/gaddafi-killed-sirte-falls-live)
12.05pm ET / 6.05pm BST: Nato commanders are recommending the Libya air campaign should now be brought to an end, according to the Guardian's Julian Borger. The formal decision will be taken tomorrow by the North Atlantic Council, representing Nato member states. Julian just received this comment from a Nato official.
A military assessment of the current situation in Libya and a recommendation for the wrapping up of the Nato operation is on its way to Nato HQ. This will most likely prompt a special meeting of the North Atlantic Council tomorrow to consider the recommendation and decide on the future of the current mission.
12 noon ET / 5pm BST: This is Adam Gabbatt in New York, continuing the Guardian's live coverage of reaction to Muammar Gaddafi's death.
The former dictator, who ruled Libya from 1969 until August this year, was killed by forces loyal to the country's new government. The Libyan government has confirmed his death. Gaddafi 69, was reportedly found hiding in a drain outside Sirte, where he and and others had taken shelter after their convoy was hit by a Nato airstrike as it attempted to escape.
A spokesman for the National Tranisitional Council – Libya's ruling body – said Gaddafi was alive when captured but died in an ambulance on the way to hospital.
Reports are also suggesting two of Gaddafi's sons were caught up in the Nato attack. Mutassim is said to have been captured. He is injured but alive.
Saif al-Islam, seen by some as the man Gaddafi wished to overtake him as ruler of Libya, is reported to be under attack after fleeing Sirte.
