Anything with wool or down inside the jacket is a perfect winter jacket. Wool jackets are usually more dressier, and down jackets are often found to be more casual.

my opinion north face would be the best with a 300 $ balance i would think so ... there's a shop that sells a lot of north face at Broadway or you can just go downtown to the nortface store and pick on up.

I prefer energie down jacket, keeps you very warm during cold weathers the cost is under 300$ as well.

TNF Plasma- bought one this season and it's so warm. Just a long sleeve under it will suffice in -8ish temps. Plus it has TNF's iteration of Gore-Tex, so it's a very good Vancouver winter jacket.

It's $400, but iirc Sport Chek will be having their Friends&Family sale, so 25% off that puts it in your $300 range.

imo in vancouver you dont really need to dress yourself like an eskimo to be warm.

If i was you i would just buy 2 smaller jackets that you can layer for those extra cold days.

Make sure you buy a shell that is water/wind proof..

then buy some light/not bulky form of insulation.. like polartec or primaloft..

companies like columbia or TNF have 3in1 sets similar to this concept of layering..

buying separately will be more expensive but you can cater to your style and get overall better performance

If you want to stay warm in vancouver, I reccomend a Softshell or an insulated shell.
Softshells are great because they are stretchy, which makes them very comfortable, they are usually water resistant with a DWR (Durable Water Resistant) coating. They are lightly insulated and are quite warm. Great for those that have a car, and dont need the jacket to be fully waterproof.

Some good examples would be the TNF Apex Bionic, or if you feel like going more "upscale" Arc'Teryx makes some great Softshells as well.

For those that takes transit, or are outdoors a lot, I reccomend an insulated shell, such as the TNF Plasma Thermal, or Arc'Teryx Fission SV or similar, these jacket are Waterproof (with Goretex, or TNF's Hyvent), and are insulated with Primaloft or coraloft. These are more practical than down, since if Down gets wet, they lose their insulation ability, and Vancouver's humid weather is not suitable for a down jacket.
