: question for strict asian families

in no way am i trying to be rude here, but me and my friend were noticing that we see asian families drive with the husband driving, while the wife sits in the backseat with either the front seat empty, or occupied by a child. why is this?
again, me and my friend were just curious, we've only seen asian families do this, is there a reason for this?

Not in my family. I drive, wife sits up front to give directions. Back seat driver up front so to speak. Quick backhand usually stops that shit, though. Hey, that's probably why. Can't get bitch slapped if you're sitting back there. You just get it after the trip, LOL.

I have a friend who was raised in a very traditional Chinese family, and every time he gives me a ride he'd tell his girlfriend to get in the back seat.
I always assumed it was because I have pretty long legs, but I hitched a ride with him and his mom once and he told his mom to get in the back seat also.

I'm not aware of such practices other then the fact that guys r usually taller and giving them the front seat makes more sense.

What do you mean by asian exactly? It's such a broad and overused term.

I am Chinese and I have a really big extended family/family friends/chinese friends here and I've never once seen or heard of a Chinese husband asking his wife/mother get into the back seat lol.

I would expect my gf to get in the back if I was picking up a friend and the 3 of us where going somewhere so he could sit in the front. Same situation but it is my mom then obviously the friend would sit in the back.

I have seen a lot of Chinese males driving while the passenger seat is empty and a wife or grandmother will sit in the back.

Same.
I'm chinese here, and my family isn't super traditional.
But some of my extended family is...

And i've never seen or heard of this practice before.

That's weird man.

I've never heard or seen that before either. Unless there was a reason, like the kid just wanted to ride shotty or taking care of a baby in the backseat. Or just needs the wife to hold a very delicate ice statue.

They do this so that if there's a head on collision, there is a better chance that one parent will survive to look after the child.

The same goes with lots of families I know who fly out on different flights -- increasing odds that more of the family will survive in case of an air crash.

while that makes sense, I'm not entirely sure that's the reason. At least, I don't think that was something my parents had in mind when I was little.

Asian wives don't like the sun very much. They must wear the power ranger mask to sit in the front.

It's very common with multi-billionaires, even if it means flying two separate private jets.

From a traditional Asian perspective:

The female mostly sit in the back while the males are in the front. I believe everyone knows the reason.

Male friend always sits in the front as a courtesy (they're treated very well) and also it's just not right letting the male friend sitting in the back with your kid and wife. However if the friend is female, they go to back with the wife--so they could chat--and the kid go up front with the dad. Note that it's unusual for female friend to sit in the front while the wife sit in the back.

Last but not least, it's considered fucked up if the wife sit in the front giving directions. The dad would be considered to be afraid of the wife--which is not a proud thing.

If there is to be any rationale behind all that stuff this is probably as close to a reasonable answer as you are going to get.

kinda scary if there are people out there expecting a collision. maybe they shouldn't drive at all.]

My in-laws do what your saying OP.

Her mother only chooses to sit in the rear passenger seat due to the fact that she hate's his driving. It makes her less anxious by sitting back there. He is a terrible driver from what my SO tells me.

You'll be surprised how many Asian women's rationale behind buying an SUV is "I crashed a small car before and I know I need to crash in a bigger one to be safe"

I just want to punch stupid women like that in the face.

I've never heard of this either. But I joke with my girlfriend that if she doesn't stop rubbing the side bolster when getting in and out of the car and wearing the leather out, I'm going to make her sit in the back. Cars with sports seats are not chick friendly.

I too grew up sitting in the front with my dad cuz im the eldest son. My dad would used to tell me to recognize roads while he drives. I'm pretty familiar with vancouver, burnaby, and richmond as a result.

This is because my mom doesn't drive at all, so now I got my license and a car, I can drive my mom around so my dad can chill at home. :fuuuuu:

Im taiwanese. our driving arrangements are different (not sure if its cultural or not).

dad drives, moms always in the front passenger. kids in the back.

back seat behind passenger (right side) normally, is referred to as the SUPERIOR seat. that is, a boss, or someone of high importance, will always sit in that spot. (for example, mafia/triad like movies. the boss is always in the back. drivers/body guard are up front.

for situations where the man driver picks up a passenger. if passenger is a man, the wife/gf of the driver will go to the back seat. if passenger is female, then wife stays up front, and female passenger goes to the back.

if im alone with my dad while he drives, i MUST sit up front with him. or it is considered disrespectful. (hes not my cheauffeur, and i am not the boss.) if me and my bro both ride in my dads car, ONE OF US (doesnt matter which), must also sit in the front.

This. But I think this concept is is not a traditional Chinese concept.

I grow up in a traditional Chinese family and sitting in the back if ur the only passenger is consider rude. It's like treating the driver as a taxi driver. There are of course exception like when aunties dint like the sun or there is a baby in the back that need taking care of.

Girl sits up front. Doesn't matter if she's my g/f, friend, or a friend of someone who's also in the car. It's just one of those things.

It annoys me if the only other person in the car sits in the back seats. Makes me feel like a damn chauffeur. Sit up front and keep me company; otherwise I'm cranking up the stereo and you wont be able to hear anything because of the sub sitting half a foot behind you.

I guess it comes down to how different groups of people acted around each other. My close group of friends from back in elementary days or people I have known for 20+ years generally would have gf sit in the back if it was a close friend. I am white however majority of my friends are not. Maybe has something to do with it....

Whenever I have a passenger they always sit in the front. Whether it's family or friend. It's just blatantly rude to sit in the back as the only passenger, and that's been noted already.

Plus, all my passengers hate sitting in the back. My exhaust annoys the hell out of them and all they hear is droning. By the end of the road trip, they step outta the car and complain my car sounds like a boat. :troll:

same thing I tell people who complain about my exhaust, or the small back seat in my pick up: Dont like it? GTFO and find your own way, theres no complaining allowed in my car or truck.

Another thing I found interesting last night. I was driving my room mates home from work and gave another friend a ride home too. She was the first one out leaving my room mates in the back, and he insisted that his girlfriend came and sat up front and he stayed in the tiny ass back seat.

What pisses me off more are people who fiddle with the climate controls or the damn stereo. Sitting there is OK - a privilege, but don't mess with my dash controls. That is grounds for hitting the eject button.

Exceptions - heat and adjustment controls for their seat, maybe the vents on their side. I even allow visors to be touched, but that's about it.

Especially the stereo's EQ adjusted to your liking and they mess with that and the sub control.

I don't get why a lot of Chinese moms insist of having their son drive them around, even to do simple errands.... while they hold drivers licenses themselves. Sure, you don't have to do any work and driving solo can be scary at first but relying on someone else is pretty restrictive. Not my cup of tea.

Asian children are supposed to take care of the parents in every imaginable ways when the parents reach old age. That's just the way it is. Most of the time, the children would be happy to do it. If the son is busy, he could ask his wife to do it. As the parents get older, they rely more on the kids, not just because they need to but also because they want to hang with them. Who don't want to hang with their kids when they're old?

Not directly related but we do have senior homes but it's an absolute disgrace leaving your parents in there.

Call it cultural difference.
