If I was in a carrier battle group going through there I'd be nervous, no better place for an ambush. Funneling the ships in there makes their numbers count for a lot less with zero room to maneuver.

Insurgents can use the indigenous populace as cover- and use it to create panic and fear. Personnel operating the canals are probably the best targets, not the ships.

I get the feeling that a good number of people who posted in this thread are pulling random preconceived ideas out of their asses.

A World War will be caused by a myriad of factors, spiraling (as history might suggest) down to domination, ideology, or an increasing possibility, resources. You don't just take one random snippet found somewhere on the internet and single it out as the cause of a World War.
And, if you're gonna do that, at least take the effort to copy and paste the article.
