With an added output buffer stage, your headphones will receive more power, to produce warmer and better sound. This is highly rated on head-fi.org for its low cost but high quality components. If you have nice headphones, such as from AKG, Audio Technica, Sennheiser, Grado, Beyerdynamic, you will need this. Don't power your cans from the onboard soundcard! These USB DACs offer much higher fidelity and no noise.
