Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, triggering tsunami warnings and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital.

The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and waters underneath. In Tokyo, crowds huddled together and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.

Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.

It triggered a tsunami warning for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

"Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region," it said.

A massive earthquake has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan, triggering a six-metre tsunami warning.

The US Geological Survey upgraded to 8.8 the magnitude of the earthquake that shook buildings in the capital,Tokyo, for several minutes on Friday, and sent people out onto the streets. Authorities had initially verified a magnitude of 7.9.

The news agency AFP said multiple injuries, but no immediate deaths, were reported from the Pacific coastal area of Miyagi on the main Honshu island.

Japan's NHK television showed black smoke billowing from a building in Odaiba, a suburb of Tokyo.

tremors were felt as far away as in the Chinese capital, beijing.

The country's meteorological agency warned that a tsunami as high as six metres could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicentre, and just a short time later broadcaster NHK said a tsunami of 50 cm had hit Japan's northern coast.

NHK showed pictures of major tsunami damage in the north, with cars, trucks, houses and buildings being swept away in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture.

Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas are all being warned to expect a tidal wave as high as six metres.

Yukiko Shimahara, a Japanese journalist, told Al Jazeera that the airports and trains in Tokyo have been shut down following the quake.

Friday's quake struck at a depth of 24 kilometres, about 125 kilometres off the eastern coast, the meteorological agency said.

Japan lies on the "Ring of Fire"- an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim and where about 90 per cent of the world's quakes occur.

Several earthquakes have hit the region in recent days, including a 7.2-magnitude quake on Wednesday.

Lots of fires are blazing through the city now. Looking outside my window, it seems like everyones just going on as if nothing happened. The news is going nuts with all the tsunamis and landslides closer to Sendai. Hope everyones alright.

And yes, I'm on RS because being on the street is more dangerous than my bunker of a stairwell here (with the door propped open). Right now, it's just a constant slow shake... still waiting for it to stop. Sometimes it flares up and all the cabinets start making a shitload of noise.

Good lord, the amount of flooding caused by the Tsunamis, on top of the damage caused by the Earthquake is insane. The only solace is that Japan is probably one of the better equipped nations for actually dealing with an earthquake and/or the aftermath.

Here's to hoping the people are mostly safe, or able to make it to safety. The size of the Tsunami waves coming in are, the only way to say it... intense.

Everything west of Japan is safe, unless the seismic waves from aftershocks cause problems further away. I guess it depends on the type of seismic waves - p or s-waves. Wish I remembered more from geophysics classes. So long ago.

Tokyo (CNN) — An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive body of water filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward highways.

The epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) away from the capital, Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. But residents there felt the tremors. The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. Waves of debris flowed like lava across farmland, pushing boats, houses and trailers toward highways. In Tokyo, crowds gathered in the streets and tried to reach relatives via cell phone. Scenes inside office buildings showed papers strewn all over the floor and people clinging onto seats and desks. Such a large earthquake at such a shallow depth creates a lot of energy, said Shenza Chen of the U.S. Geological Survey. It caused a power outage in about 4 million homes in Tokyo and surrounding areas. A tsunami in the Pacific was moving closer to other shorelines in other countries, said CNN meteorologist Ivan Cabrera. It triggered tsunami warnings for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said. “Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region,” it said. “Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter.” The quake was the latest in a series in the region this week. Early Thursday, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck off the coast of Honshu. A day earlier, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off of Honshu, the country’s meteorological agency said.
The largest recorded quake took place in Chile on May 22, 1960, with a magnitude of 9.5, the USGS said.

Its not about the wait. Its about the hiccups in the subduction process of the plates.

Hey guys, another update:

Watching NHK, a lot of the focus is mainly on the tsunamis up north. It showed about 10 minutes ago a wave of water sweeping into Aomori. Pretty scary watching that live. Right now on TV, it's showing a growing tsunami still a ways offshore of Miyagi-ken.

In terms of damage in the city, most of the buildings are in-tact. However, they did show a building completely crumbled in Fukushima. Another education institution had their roof collapse and everyone was outside. There were tarps and a few ambulances outside and a lot of paramedics working on people.

Early estimation is 216 billion yen of damage but not like that even matters at this point and time.
