Thinking about preparing an earthquake kit for my family. What to put in it other then water and some food ? Where do I buy a first aid kit ? How many of you have one?

You can buy a first aid kit at Canadian tire.

another thing you should add to your earth quake kit is a set of tools, a Fubar and fuel.

i hate to admit it, but i'm not prepared at all. we were taught to do this in elementary but a lot of us just don't bother and we absolutely should living where we live. i think i was prepared for perhaps a few years after elementary but then nothing really happened so i stopped bothering to do it.

I think you just need enough supplies (food, water, clothes, first aid) to survive through the first 72 hours after the quake. I'm not sure if it's 48 or 72 hours, but it was mentioned in one of those government emergency guides.

I found the website.

http://www.pep.bc.ca/hazard_preparedness/earthquake_preparedness.html

There is an emergency supplies store opened in city square just for this kind of stuff.

Flashlight, flare gun, breakable glow sticks, portable radio, rope, pocket knife/swiss army knife and the usual food+water+first aid kit.

If I remember correctly, Canadian Tire and even Costco sells a family emergency kit. It includes knives, radio, flash light, fire blanket and first aid kit. A lot more than that but I just can't name all the items off the top of my head. When I got it for the family roughly a year or two ago it cost about $250 but well worth it. Its the size of a small/medium duffle bag. It is designed to fit for family of 4-5.

I also have a full case of dry goods all non perishable (rubbermaid container) and a full case of 2L bottled water about 50 bottles or so (seperated also in a rubbermaid container) all the water and food to last for a month. All these are in a container in the back of my house in an open area.

Had this setup a while back and its good because once you have everything prepared you really don't have to keep thinking about it. Its there when you need it and the comfort knowing you have emergency supplies and food in place the kit already served its purpose.

I'm glad that helped. But remember to buy an "Emergency Kit" which is designed to provide you with basic needs. Also the obvious get the kit that is enough to help everyone in the household or else it kind of defeats the purpose!

I always have 4-5 big canadian springs bottles just in case something happens. Im huge into camping so I always have my four season tent and lights and everything to go if something happens. As well always have lots of propane so in case something happens I can cook food with no issues.

I have a little kit in my truck as well, water bottles granola bars etc if you have spare room why not I wouldn't want to be stuck in my truck with nothing to eat or drink that's for sure

I have one, but it only consists of batteries, flashlights, canned food and water. It's been a couple of years since I renewed the batteries and food so I'm making an effort this weekend to replace them and add additional supplies to the kit.

Also if they haven't been already raided by everyone else thinking the same thing.

lol. you're funny

I live really really close to a 7 11. Hence I chose 7 11 instead of places.

again.. that would be one of my last options, depending on the situation.

its kinda funny to see people gets paranoid after an incident happned

its just like the flu and virus season a year ago that all schools and malls and public areas installed hand sanitizers at every entrances and people were using it like no tomorrow. All sanitizer refills were out of stock and back order....

and i barely see anyone using those in the past few months... lol

Where are you keeping this in the back of your house I'd worry about summer heat and winter frost damage and such.
I'd love to assemble an exhaustive week long kit that takes only annual maintenance of eating the canned food.

Also, does anybody know how long gasoline lasts?
I have 2 50cc scooters that only sip a couple of liters of gasoline a week, I figured they would be good to get around if everything goes to hell and back.

One thing people forget to put in there kits is money. With a big earthquake Credit cards and debit cards will not be working.

TheNewGirl
03-14-2011, 02:56 PM
I was thinking about that too the other day Maniac. Most of us don't have cash in the house at all, or if we do it's loose change and that's it. If things did go to shit, we wouldn't be able to buy extra supplies even if we could get to a store.

Why would you need cash after a big earthquake? Everything will either be looted or broken!...

you can have all the stuff you can handle. but it isn't going to help if you can't defend your family and people come steal it all.

i think it will depend how hard we get hit

if vancouver looks like haiti or sichuan after, all hell will break loose
if vancouver looks like tokyo after (everything still standing), i think we will be more civilized
we really dunno how we will look like, since there hasnt been a "big" one in modern times

seriously, i dont think its a bad idea to have weapons in your earthquake kit, especially if you own a small business, looters gon' loot

LOL I think of all places, the bank vaults would be the sturdiest so I doubt it would be cracked open with some heavy shaking... but then again... that could be a good excuse for us ...
