what free online sites are there to build a forum or community?

i want to build a forum for a group of classmates to stay in touch with each other. anyone know of anything good and reliable out there?

It's not a free site, but if you have your own hosting, phpBB is a good forum to install.

Other then that there are free solutions that offer free hosted forums. A quick Google search will show this.

i was trying this out when friendster was still beta and facebook was not out yet...in the end, they went friendster even though it was uber slow then...then they went facebook and thats when i said suck it jabroni
